  • Document I – Cross-FLTSEC 8 February 2013

Revision 1 Field: Max capacity Revision: NCL2007 reduced from 180-120; NCL3007 increased from 350 – 430; NCL3008 reduced from 60-40; NCL8007 increased from 40 - 60 Rationale: CDM capacities adapted to reflect recruitment trends and to produce a universal CDM cap of 650. Revision 2 Field: Teaching methods Revision: Teaching activities and staff contact hours (see attached Teaching Methods tables). Rationale: The proposed revisions to CDM teaching activities will increase the regularity and effectiveness of tutor/student interactions; result in students developing greater expertise and improve efficiency of service delivery. From 2013/14, CDM teaching schedule will be timetabled by University Timetable Services. This development will enable module staff to develop a regular teaching programme and will encourage students to see the teaching sessions as important which will make them more likely to attend all the sessions. The increase in student/tutor interaction from the increased regularity of teaching will make student learning and tutor interaction more effective. Reducing lag between classroom learning and workplace practice and making the link between the two more explicit will increase student expertise in relation to CDM learning outcomes. Students will have more opportunities to understand the challenging concepts associated with experiential learning by practising in a rigorous, reflective way. Finally, greater aggregation in CDM learning activities will enable CS to maintain similar levels of student support while making efficiency savings in terms of staff contact hours. Revision 3 Field: Other assessments Revision: Reflective log comment changed from “Establish a Learning Agreement in semester one that will be critically reviewed in semester two (1000)” to “A critical review of progress made towards module learning outcomes during semester 1” Rationale: A review of CDM student experience produced anecdotal evidence that some students felt that their personal development was confined to the areas established in the learning agreement. Removing this label will address this confusion and encourage students to continue the cycle of plan-do-review over the full course of

the module. Information gathered through MEQ and SSC strongly indicated students’ preference for an earlier assessment, so the submission deadline for this assignment will be brought forward to the last teaching week of semester one. Students are expected to complete 30 hours (of 70) of direct engagement with their placement in semester one so they will have sufficient time to produce the standard of performance expected. Revision 4 Field: Assessment rationale and relationship Revision: Include following sentence re: re-sits, “Decisions regarding re-sit requirements are made by academic school Boards of Examiners and communicated to the Careers Service. The re-sit task for this module is a take away paper to be completed during the next University re-sit examination period”. Rationale: To inform University staff and students of module re-sit process.

Hi Roy, thanks for the input. The new submission date will be in January (very last week ofsemester 1) so I can assure you that students will have had sufficient time to produce the standardof performance expected.

I think there are probably just enough teams in the premiership below SAFC "quality" threshold tobe too concerned about the black cats.

    Think that’s a hat trick

From: Colin Bryson Sent: 09 January 2013 8:31 PMTo: Jessica JungSubject: RE: Proposed changes to CDM Dear JessicaHappy New Year!I would concur that timetabling these sessions is a wise move. I have operated with 'optionalsessions' in several modules in the past and know that balancing flexibility and formality is ratherimportant. Actually timetabling really helps formalise these in the student's minds so they realise wesee them as important! I appreciate your sessions are not really optional but rather essential toattend so I think timetabling will help a great deal in ensuring that.I think increasing your contact hours is wise too but despite the independent nature and autonomyrequired of so much of the student work they really value the reassurance and support that acontact session provides. It does need to oodles of 'content' but serves as a tutorial shouldin keeping them on the path and emphasising the goals and route markers. It also provides anopportunity for dialogue and feedback to all parties. And I endorse the idea too of some interim assessment point that occurs by the mid-point. It givesa an indication of progress, 'how am I doing?' and dare I say, 'do I need to do rather more to dowell?',I think that there is steep learning curve for students in such practice based and experientiallearning modules - not least in understanding the concepts (and gaining literacy in the'language') and 'practising' in a rigorous, reflective way - so all these changes assist that process. all bestColinColin BrysonDirector of the Combined Honours CentreLevel G Daysh BuildingNewcastle University http://raise-network.ning.com/ 0191 222 6389

    Dear Colin,

Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed the Christmas break, feels like a long time ago to

    me!

We’re currently working with timetabling who have told us they will be able to include

CDM sessions on students’ timetables from next year (don’t ask me how, but they are

confident they will be able to achieve it!) This should be a really positive step as it will

address many of the points students have made in previous years about it being

difficult to attend teaching sessions (or regarding them as ‘optional’ because they don’t

appear on the timetable!), low contact time with staff, etc.

  • We’re therefore altering our MOFs to reflect this – essentially an increase in

compulsory contact time with students from eight hours across the year to 15, with

timetabled study groups during the weeks we are not running lectures seminars or

tutorials. We’re also considering moving the submission for students’ written

coursework from early March to the first week back after Christmas (again responding

to feedback from our SSC to indicate students would prefer to complete some

    assessment earlier in the year).

Darrin will be taking these proposed changes to Cross-Faculty LTSEC in February and

we’ve been asked to consult with key academic schools who would be affected by the

changes so it would be great if you could let me know any thoughts on this (just a few

sentences is fine unless you have more to say!) before 25th Jan, when he will need to

    submit the proposal.

    Many thanks,

    Jess

My break was mostly taken up with marking but we did have a fewdays off with the family, way in the past now though as you say. These changes would be very good for our students. Having the timetabled hours would make itmuch more likely that they would attend all of the sessions and this would definitely help themto do well in the module. It would also make it easier for ourselves when trying to fit inadditional skills workshops etc. Changing the hand in date for the assignment would be evenmore beneficial for our students. They have their 30 credit project to hand in before Easter sothe deadlines often conflict. If the CDM hand in was earlier they would have more time to spendon it and it would also give them more time to concentrate on their project report write up inMarch. I hope you decide to go ahead with this one. Is this enough? I probably could say more if my brain was working but we’re totally overloadedwith students in crisis at the moment and I can’t think straight! Val. • Subject: Proposed changes to CDM Hi Val,

Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed the Christmas break? I was back to work last

Thursday and now feel like I was never away… It was nice while it lasted though!

We’re therefore altering our MOFs to reflect this – essentially an increase in

compulsory contact time with students from eight hours across the year to 15, with

timetabled study groups during the weeks we are not running lectures seminars or

tutorials. We’re also considering moving the submission for students’ written

coursework from early March to the first week back after Christmas (again responding

to feedback from our SSC to indicate students would prefer to complete some

    assessment earlier in the year).

Darrin will be taking these proposed changes to Cross-Faculty LTSEC in February

and we’ve been asked to consult with key academic schools who would be affected

by the changes so it would be great if you could let me know any thoughts on this (just

a few sentences is fine unless you have more to say!) before 25th Jan, when he will

    need to submit the proposal.

    Many thanks,

    Jess
