Slide 2 A NEW WAY OF LEARNING CILEx L6 Blended Learning Slide 3 What is Blended learning? It is a unique combination of face to face and distance learning We are the first College to offer this particular approach Started as a pilot in 13/14 Very successful so is now our permanent method of delivery Slide 4 Which subjects are being offered in this way? This year the subjects taught by blended learning are: Crime Criminal Litigation Family Wills Probate Practice Tort All are taught by me Slide 5 What will it Entail? First session all L6 blended learning students together 2 hour session on how the course works Then for each subject you get access to 6 pre-recorded e-lectures involving the PowerPoints with my commentary recorded over them You can watch them as often as you like, when you like Each lecture can also be downloaded as an MP3 track (in other words a sound only) so you can listen to it on the move Slide 6 And what else? Each pre-recorded session has a piece of homework attached to it which you will be sent and marked online After 6 sessions there is a 3 hour live Q & A session so that I can check learning and answer any questions you may have Slide 7 What if you dont understand something in the e-lectures? Ask me! You will have unlimited e-mail support from me And there will be a CILEx student forum on Moodle so that you can support each other Remember that I am there to support your learning so rather than worry over a point just ask! Slide 8 What happens after the first half term? Exactly the same half a terms e-lectures with homework and a face to face session every half term up to Easter After which law subjects - half a terms e-revision sessions and a face to face revision day For criminal lit and probate - 2 half days session on the case study Slide 9 Overview of Blended Learning Route Every half term = 6 x 1.5 hour e-lectures which you can listen to and watch online and/or listen to separately as often as you like 6 x pieces of homework sent and marked online Unlimited email support from subject tutor Unlimited access to online forum 1 x 3 hour face to face session drawing together all 6 lessons Revision day/case study sessions Slide 10 What happens if you cant make a face to face session? The idea behind blended learning is that its a half way point between traditional lecture format and distance learning so coming to the face to face sessions is encouraged If you cant make it however I will contact you my email/phone and we can discuss any issues All the materials used at the face to face sessions will be available on Moodle Slide 11 Will we be offering other subjects? Yes Legal Research - 5/6 Saturday mornings 10-1 Sept term Client Care - 5/6 Saturday mornings 10-1 Jan term And assuming we have sufficient students we will also offer Land Law and Conveyancing - provisionally - alternate Saturdays 10-1 Contract - provisionally - Wednesday 9-10.30 Slide 12 Cost per unit 14/15 Land law, conveyancing, contract and are full units taught face to face and are 630 per unit Legal research and client care are half units taught face to face and are 315 per unit All blended learning units are 600 per unit So not only is it a flexible way of learning its a very cost effective one too! Slide 13 Conclusion We believe that the blended learning route offers the flexibility to study when it suits combined with as much support as you need to succeed at L6 If you are interested/have any questions/would like more information please email me, Barbara Bowyer [email protected] [email protected] I am the CILEx programme manger, an ex Criminal Barrister and have been at Guildford for 8 years and I look forward to hearing from you
