New African Aesthetic Powered by the Youth of South Africa.

Premier of the Western Cape, Helen Zille, shared her belief and vision for Cape Town to be Design Capital for 2014 and affirmed that MoDILA will be the pinnacle of the coming together of various design interven-tions and developments taking place in Cape Town. We delighted to have the support of The Province.

Executive Council member Kaylene Levack gave us highlights of what MoDILA is and what it repesents. The importance of key relationship building across sectors cannot be underestimated if we are to create and fashion the future we envisage. Mokena’s vision provides a platform for such realtionships to be forged. For Kaylene’s Full speech visitwww.modilatrust.co.za or write to [email protected]

Mokena Makeka is the Founder and principal driver behind MoDILA. He is the Creative and Managing Director ofthe award winning architectural and urban design practice Makeka Design Lab. Mokena is a strong advocate ofsocietal transformation through the power of design and he is known for his belief that “good architecture and design is a basic human right” He is an ardent patron of the Arts andstrong contributor to Cape Towns’ bid to become the World Design Capital in 2014. MoDILA is constituted by diverse and passionate creatives, one of which is Africa Melane. Reknowned for his voice and intellect, MoDILA is privileged to have him as a Trustee and were glad to have him as the MC on the evening. You can hear Africa on 567 Cape Talk weekdays.

On a night that layed hold of the promise of a brighter future for all citizens through bold and brave leaps of faith, guests were enter-tained by The Delft Big Band under the directorship of Cape Town Jazz Guru Ian Smith. The 16 piece ensemble gave a rendition of John Legend’s interpretation of “Wake Up Everybody”. And indeed peo-ples imaginations were awakened. The synergy’s between The Delft

Big Band and MoDILA are apparent to say the least. This development program is tar-geted at vulnerable youth from high schools in Leiden, Rosendal and Voorbrug. Through this program, which has early intervention as a core element, music is used as a vehicle to equip the youth with valuable life-skills.It is such efforts that MoDILA undertakes and supports through its programs.

Without support from like minded people and organisations institutions like MoDILA would be highly disadvantaged in its mission to make a siginicant societal contribution.

In support of MoDILA, the Rhebokskloof Wine Estate generously partnered with MoDILA on the night and has shown their belief in what MoDILA embodies by this show of friendship. Strategic relation-ships shall be pivotal in seeing a de-sign and art conscious public thriving in the Western Cape and the country as a whole.Kaylene Levack

FOCUS ON:Musuem of Design, Innovation, Leadership & Art, Makeka Design Lab“Whilst architects have retained their traditional strength of cultural and aesthetic, formal considerations, they have lost their numeracy and the ability to demonstrate that architectural intention and performance need not be diametrically opposed concerns, and in a nation which is still largely design illiterate, the price that society pays for ill conceived and overly simplified solutions to the built environment has been the production diminished public environments, and increased isolation of the architect from the public imagination as a trustworthy and responsible practitioner and agent for change.” Mokena Makeka
