“A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step” - LAO-TZU, Tao Te ChingWelcome to the debut issue of Modern Mississauga, the city’s lifestyle magazine. We’re thrilled to be here with you. What started as old friends getting together for dinner a few months ago has quickly and carefully evolved into what you hold in your hands and/or see on your screen: a beautiful city-wide magazine that’s been a labour of love and something we hope you’re as excited about as we are. We started this magazine around a kitchen table with a simple mission: to explore Mississauga through the lens of the 21st century. Inside each issue, you’ll find articles and information on the arts, food and drink, lifestyle, money, technology, transportation and travel, framed by our perspective as Canadians and as residents of Mississauga. In this issue, we explore the incredible technology of 3D printers, with programs available at our local Mississauga libraries; we bring you health and wellness ideas from five immensely qualified Mississauga fitness experts; we explain Uber and what it means for Mississauga; we showcase local museums, shine a spotlight on a hard-working entrepreneur, bring you tips for saving money, and much more, all from the perspective of people who live in and love this city. In honour of Mississauga turning 42 this year, we’ve also put together a list of 42 things that we think make this city special.

We’re absolutely grateful for the tremendous amount of support we’ve received and fully realize we wouldn’t be here without it. For our dearest readers and everyone who we haven’t quite met yet (but hope to soon!) who engage with us online, every read, like, share, comment, favourite and re-tweet gave us continued momentum over the past several months. We thank you and look forward to keeping you engaged. To our wonderful advertising partners, who believe in us and share our vision for creating a media company that celebrates our city and showcases the vast amount of local talent through a trusted and reliable medium, we thank you for helping us get our proverbial “wheels off the ground.” To our incredibly talented design and writing team, who wholeheartedly support Modern Mississauga and invest their time and effort to create well-written content, a beautiful print product and a dynamic website, we thank you. And of course to our loved ones, family, friends and colleagues, who provided continuous encouragement from the outset and are our loudest cheerleaders, we thank you a billion times over. We hope you enjoy this debut issue of Modern Mississauga and look forward to continuing to provide you quality, relevant and engaging content. We’re approachable folks and would like to connect with you, so please do reach out. With gratitude, humility and an eagerness to take the next step together,

Mississauga’s own Arlene Paculan isn’t just a talented musician and singer. The enthralling Gemini is using her talents and passion for music to help inspire and empower others. She’s a seasoned performer who has been showcasing her talents throughout the GTA for over two decades now, with no plans on slowing down. She launched the “Wonder Women” performance series in 2010, an avenue that started out as a showcase for female singer-song-writers across various genres and putting them in front of different audiences to exhibit their talents and help increase awareness. It also raises funds for female-driven associations. With each event growing in popularity, the performance, now called “WonderFest,” combines “Wonder Women and Super Men” to broaden the appeal of the event and allow more talented musicians to connect their music with the community. These events have ballooned in popularity so much so that now they’re not only about music. There are various art mediums included, such as painting, poetry, spoken word, dance, film, performance art, comedy, motivational speakers and storytellers. With such breadth and depth, Arlene’s vision is constantly growing and that’s great news for her fellow artists.

Clearly, this gal is all about giving back, which is something she’s quite humble about. Her mantra is to “Showcase the talent around us. To give artists a platform and outlet and afford them an opportunity to introduce and share their passion with the world.” She goes on to say, “These events are to inspire and encourage people to create, regardless of the medium. Creativity can be found nearly anywhere, from setting the table, to an intricate spreadsheet, to a corporate setting and a plethora of avenues in between.” I asked what motivates her and the instant answer was “My love for music and ability to create opportunities for others.” It wasn’t a rehearsed response. It wasn’t saying what she thought I wanted to hear. The way she spoke, her confident tone and the excitement that surrounded our over two hour conversation was an honest representation of a selfless woman who understands the value in helping others through her success. She launched her own event/artist promotion company in 2012, called “Let’s Make Good Productions”, with her close friend, Kat Leonard, taking the leadership role as Artistic Director. The company’s mission statement is to spread empowerment through various art forms via ongoing WonderFest events and workshops. Adding to that is a TV show they

host on Rogers TV called “WonderFest TV” which gives them another outlet to promote their empowering message. In 2016, expect to see a host of WonderFest events, in addition to her weekly solo performances and energetic live performances with her band, “Arlene Paculan & the Cool Ones”. Somehow, she’s also found time to work on an EP of original music that’s due in 2016. Either she’s found a way to freeze time or she sleeps every other night. Either way, this Mississauga talent is motivated, driven and absolutely ambitious. Between empowering and supporting a plethora of other musicians and artists, expansion plans for WonderFest and consistent live performances, this Randolph Academy educated super-woman still boots around in a 2004 Toyota Camry (say what you want, that car has tons of space for her gear) and is incredibly humble. She constantly deflects the attention off of her and pours it onto others, knowing that giving bears more than receiving. With her head in the clouds, feet firmly on the ground and fingers frequently dancing upon 88 black and white keys, Mississauga’s Arlene Paculan has beautifully blossomed from a rising star to an ever-shining beacon of inspiration and empowerment, lighting the way for others.

The MARTY Awards have been an essential part of celebrating the Mississauga arts landscape for the past 22 years. The annual awards are presented to emerging and established artists across various genres who excel in their respective fields. New for 2016 is a three-day event that sees the MARTY’s, MACConference and the MACArts Festival brought together from May 19 to 21. With everyone living increasingly busy lives and using our cellphones as our primary means of communication, the City of Mississauga has partnered with the Pingstreet mobile app to create a centralized source for plenty of city information. Say you’re driving on Hurontario and you notice a pothole. You do a safe maneuver to avoid it and think “I hope that gets filled soon because the next driver may ruin his suspension/tire/rim if they don’t avoid it”. Or perhaps you see some graffiti that you’d like removed by the city and you think, “once I get home and settled after dinner and wind down and put the kids to bed, I’ll fire up my laptop/computer and let the city know.” Really though, on the priority scale and the effort scale, chances are that it’ll get pushed to the bottom of the list. And that’s absolutely understandable. What the Pingstreet app allows you to do is report the problem through their incredibly user-friendly app (you can also upload a picture) and within a couple of minutes, the city will be informed about said pothole. Or let’s say you’re visiting friends or family over the holidays and decide that you need to spend the night. Maybe there’s a sudden snowstorm, or you simply ‘celebrated the holidays’ a little too hard. Instead of having to plan ahead and get a parking permit in advance from the City of Mississauga’s website, or worse still, try to navigate the parking permit’s less-than-mobile-friendly page on your phone screen in the middle of the night, you can use the app and your parking permit is a few taps away. I see it as a great way to have residents easily connect with the city, the operative word being easy. Because that’s what we want as residents. We want to be able to have our voices heard, we want to have our city looking as beautiful as possible all the time, and we want to know what’s happening around us.

Here’s what you’ll have instant access to with the app: » Contact info for the Mayor and Ward Councillors » Latest news releases » Upcoming community events and committee meetings » Garbage and recycling schedules and info » The Discover Mississauga website » Parking permit information » Meetings and events There’s even a “Manage Notifications” settings so you’ll receive the latest info on topics of your choice right to your phone. As mentioned, the app is absolutely free and a great communication tool to stay current with what’s going on in our city. Best of all, it’s truly multi-platform - Pingstreet is available not just for iOS and Android, but also BlackBerry and Windows Phone. To make it easy to get the app, all you have to do is visit www.mississauga.ca/portal/services/pingstreet, scroll to the bottom of the page, choose which mobile device you use, and install the app.

Because that’s what we want as residents. We want to be able to have our voices heard, we

want to have our city looking as beautiful as possible all the

time, and we want to know what’s happening around us.

Libraries have never been just about books. They’ve always been a valuable community resource, hosting a variety of events and workshops for all ages, from Reading Buddies to graphic design workshops, and in today’s digital age, libraries are more important than ever. For a long time and for many people, they were the only place to get reliable, free access to the latest technologies like computers, productivity applications, and the internet. It’s hard to imagine a time when internet access wasn’t as pervasive or affordable as it is today, but for those of us who remember dial-up speeds, being billed by the hour, and losing your connection when someone picked up the phone (seriously mom, EVERY TIME), libraries represented a kind of exploratory freedom that you just couldn’t get at home. Emerging technologies like robotics and 3D printing might one day be as widespread as computers and mobile phones, but for now we’re in the same situation as we were with internet in the 90s: limited in availability, prohibitive costs, and with variable quality and reliability.

The Mississauga Library System wants to make these innovations as accessible to the community as possible, and with the expansion of their 3D printing program beyond the Central Library, they’re doing just that. You might ask, “Just what the heck is this whole 3D printing stuff, anyway?” Without going into too many technical details about extruders and filaments and CAD models, think of a 3D printer as being kind of like an easy-bake oven. You get a recipe, the ingredients go in, and stuff comes out - but with a 3D printer, you get an iPhone case instead of dangerously undercooked brownies. “But I don’t need an iPhone case,” you say. Well, 3D printers can make lots of other things too! Like a sweet 3D-printed garlic press. Garlic Press by daveseff via Thingiverse (CC BY-SA 3.0)

EXPERIENCE THE FUTURE, TODAY

Now that you’ve had all that garlic, you’re probably going to want to take care of that breath situation with some minty fresh toothpaste. You pull out the tube and see that someone’s almost used it all up, and it’s going to take a lot of work to squeeze out the last few bits. Don’t you wish you had something to help you with that? Well, 3D printing has you covered there, too – you can 3D print your very own toothpaste pusher! You’re pretty impressed so far, but now you’re wondering, “where can I find other designs for cool things to 3D print?”Thingiverse (www.thingiverse.com), with its super helpful maker community, is the best place to get started. “This sounds too good to be true,” you mutter suspiciously. “What’s the catch?”Watching these printers in action makes it look as if magical objects pop out within minutes, but it actually takes hours to print anything substantial. That said, the library’s print rates are $1 per project plus $0.05 (five cents) per minute, so it’s still ridiculously affordable, and they let you book up to 4 hours for your project (they’ll evaluate longer projects on a case-by-case basis, subject to availability).

“Okay, I’m sold,” you exclaim gleefully. “I’m heading to a library now to PRINT ALL THE THINGS!” Hold on there, cowboy. The 5th Generation MakerBot Replicators at the library are thousands of dollars worth of advanced machinery. You can’t just roll up and start printing. You need to take a 30-minute 3D printer certification course. Certification is free, and is a requirement if you want to print your own designs. Certification

is available at all four branches that have 3D printers. Here are some upcoming dates:• Burnhamthorpe Library Tuesday, May 24, 7-7:30 pm• Central Library Saturday April 30, 2016, 2:00 pm – 2:30 pm Tuesday May 3, 2016, 7:00 pm – 7:30 pm Monday May 16, 2016, 7:00 pm – 7:30 pm• Erin Meadows Library Saturday, May 14 from 2:30 – 3:00pm Tuesday, May 24, from 7:00 - 7:30pm

• Malton Library Thursday, May 26th, 2016 7:00 – 8:00 pm

For a complete schedule of certification courses and more information on 3D printing or other emerging technologies, you can contact Maker Mississauga at [email protected]. They’re your source for all maker-related things in the Mississauga Library System.

Electricity is crucial to our modern lives. It makes us more comfortable and our everyday lives become more convenient. But it’s important to remember that electricity can be very dangerous. Be sure to think ‘Safety First’ when working near electrical equipment. For tips on how to remain safe when working on your outdoor projects, please visit www.enersource.com.

The importance of electrical safety can be shocking.

Spring has returned to Mississauga and now is the time to begin the outdoor projects we planned throughout the winter. This work can involve digging small holes, larger-scale ground excavation or using ladders. Before beginning any project, it is important to be aware of the potential electrical dangers that exist on your property.

Digging Safety

Contact with or damage to underground services can have serious consequences, including personal injury, the chance of creating a safety risk for others, and the loss of essential services.

When digging is required, customers and contractors are reminded to follow some simple steps in advance of any work: Contact Ontario One Call’s free, 24-hour a day service at least one

week before you plan to dig. Ontario One Call can be reached by telephone at 1-800-400-2255 or by visiting www.on1call.com.

When contacting Ontario One Call, provide your location, project scope and expected timelines.

Wait! Ontario One Call will notify the utilities with underground equipment in your area. If there are any buried cables or wires on your property, they will be clearly marked for you.

Once you have the information needed, carefully follow the instructions provided and dig safely to avoid personal injury or damage to underground equipment.

Powerline Safety

Contact with overhead electrical equipment can also have serious consequences.

It is important to remember that you don’t need to come into contact with a powerline directly for it to seriously injure or kill. Electricity can jump or ‘arc’ through the air to an object you’re touching and cause a severe shock.

When working around electrical equipment, there are safety steps that everyone should obey: Look up, look out and locate powerlines when cleaning

eavestroughs, windows, working on the roof, painting the house or pruning trees.

Carry ladders horizontally, never vertically, and check for overhead powerlines before putting them up.

Plant trees away from overhead powerlines so they don’t eventually grow into the electrical system. If your trees are growing into powerlines, please call Enersource for information on how to address this issue safely.

If you see a fallen powerline, stay back 10 metres or 33 feet (the length of a school bus), and call 9-1-1 and Enersource immediately.

Taking a few extra steps to ensure your project is performed safely can be the difference between a life and death situation. Please remember to always think ‘Safety First’ before you begin any outdoor project.

Think ‘Safety First’ During Spring Renovations

Dig Safe Month and Powerline Safety Week are two important electrical safety campaigns held every year. This year, the Dig Safe Month campaign is being held in April, followed by Powerline Safety Week, which takes place from May 16-22.

When it comes to wireless plans, it can feel like we’re constantly paying more for less – data buckets keep getting smaller, and our bills keep getting larger. Here are some tips to help you get the most value in a confusing wireless landscape.

CALL & NEGOTIATEThis tactic isn’t as effective as it used to be, but there are still some deals to be had. Wait until you’re near the end of your contract, then call Bell, Rogers, or Telus (whichever carrier you’re with) and let them know you’re exploring other options. Don’t make a big scene or threaten to cancel - just calmly explain that you’re in the market for a new plan, you’ve been looking at other carriers, and then ask what they can do for a loyal customer such as yourself. It helps if you have the details of a plan someone else has been offered. You can find plenty of resources on the internet - message boards like those at www.howardforums.com are an invaluable resource full of people who share their experiences and compare rate plan details.

CHECK WITH YOUR EMPLOYER OR UNIONCorporate plans often come with steep discounts. Check to see if your company has negotiated a deal with any of the carriers, and see if you can get on their negotiated rate plan. If you’re a member of a union, they might also have deals negotiated with certain wireless providers. Members of OPSEU, for example, have one of the most attractive plans available to them through Bell, at a discount of nearly 40% off the market rate.

SEE IF YOU QUALIFY FOR BUSINESS RATESAre you an entrepreneur? Don’t think that you need to be a Fortune 500 company or even a medium-sized business to take advantage of business rates. Most carriers will offer you competitive business pricing for as few as two lines.

SWITCH TO A FLANKER BRAND“Flanker” brands use exactly the same infrastructure and offer exactly the same service (in terms of reception and data speeds) as their parent companies, but at a bit of a discount. At Bell, for example, you can get a plan with unlimited nationwide talk & text and 1GB of data for $80. At Bell-owned Virgin Mobile, you can get exactly the same plan for $60. What you give up for that $20 monthly savings are extra frills like an expanded phone selection and the ability to share data with other people on your account. If those things don’t matter to you, go with a flanker and drive that bill down! Yes, it all goes to the same company in the end, but you’ll still be sending a message that there’s a limit to how much you’re willing to pay. It can be difficult to keep track of who owns who, so here’s a handy list:Bell - Virgin Mobile, SoloTelus - Koodo, Public MobileRogers - Fido, Chatr*, Mobilicity**Chatr and Mobilicity are a bit different in that their service does come with restrictions (in terms of coverage area and data speeds) - none of the other flanker brands are “second-class citizens” in this way.

SWITCH TO WIND MOBILE I know. This is like cutting off your nose to spite your face. Reception is spotty, data is slow, and customer service is bad. I’ve personally switched to WIND Mobile twice, tried it for a few months, then went crawling back to Telus each time. Then again, there are people I know who are perfectly happy with WIND, so there’s no harm in trying it out for a month to see if it’ll work for you. It may require a bit of sacrifice, but the only way to truly show the Big 3 that competitive prices matter is to vote with your wallet.

SCANDINAVE SPABLUE MOUNTAIN

For a guy who’s born under the Pisces sign, one would think that I’d like spending more time in the water. Yes, I’ve been to a host of beautiful beaches, I enjoy boating and even though I failed horribly during my first water skiing attempt in 2015, I’ll try it again. Scandinave Spa, located in Blue Mountain, ON, rests on 25 acres of beautiful, scenic, picturesque, forested land that boasts gorgeous scenery year round and offers a serene, relaxing experience via the power of hydrotherapy at this Nordic themed spa. Walking over a 180 foot wooden bridge brings you to the beautiful facility and sets the mood for serenity, encouraging you to leave all of your troubles at the door. Greeted by Mylisa Henderson, co-owner and Director of Marketing and Sales as I entered the beautifully crafted building, all the pools were getting busy and the line-up of people in the lobby at 9:00 am on a Sunday illustrated that she’d crafted something sought after. Guests couldn’t get enough of this modern escape from what she told us and the plethora of positive online reviews. It’s not bragging. Rather, it’s pride in creating something so enticing that keeps her guests happy and wanting more. It’s a quiet zone all around and there are subtle signs reminding you of that. For the most part, guests are good

about keeping the chatter to a barely audible level but in the event that some forget, the outdoor staff gently remind you to lower your voice in a friendly manner. How do I know? Because chatter-box Jay had to be reminded only a few minutes into the visit. Oops. The spa is busy year-round and attracts visitors worldwide who want to experience relaxation, rejuvenation and tranquility. To get the most of the experience, Mylisa suggests a combination of cold plunges and hot baths, integrating a Finnish sauna and Norwegian steam baths in between. For optimal relaxation and revitalization, she recommends starting in a hot bath, sauna or steam room, which opens pores and begins the detoxifying process. Then, be brave and experience a cold plunge which will rinse the toxins from the skin and quickly close your pores in addition to raising heart rates and boosting blood circulation. Finally, spend some time relaxing in a solarium, hammock, Muskoka chair or two outdoor fireplace lounge areas, all which help return your body to normal levels. The health benefits themselves are worth the visit, let alone the striking, natural scenery that envelops you.

Scandinavians are quite advanced when it comes to health and wellness and this three-stage process is still widely utilized on the other side of the Atlantic. Stress reduction, therapeutic and personal benefits, detoxification and skin cleansing are all benefits of hydrotherapy, which are available through Scandinave Spa. There are massage options as well for those who want added relaxation out of the water. With clean change rooms with excellent amenities and supplies, a picturesque main building and an array of national awards (9/50 top spas in Canada, Collingwood business of the year 2013 & 2009, Top Canadian spa experience 2010, innovating & sustainable tourism award 2012, etc), their hard, dedicated work speaks for itself. The spa has been helping people unwind and disconnect from the outside world with the power of water and silence since December of 2006. With nearly every day full of guests, they’ve created a unique experience that’s only an hour away from Mississauga. And while nobody could specifically tell me how much they enjoyed the experience (quiet policy, remember?) the sea of smiles and relaxed faces told me all I needed to know. Take it from a guy who’s a Pisces by birth but a land lover by nature. If I can enjoy the health and healing benefits from the power of hydrotherapy, anybody can.

Sometimes, we spend so much time and effort planning our holidays that we lose sight of the fundamentals. Here are four basic yet essential ways to get the most out of any vacation.

TAKE PLENTY OF PICTURESSmartphone cameras are the most widely used cameras. Gone are the worries of “I hope this picture turns out well,” or “did I blink? I hope I didn’t blink,” or the dreaded “I hope I got enough snaps of that!”• Take 5 pictures instead of one. The number of pictures you can socially post is infinite, so forget “less is more” - more is more in this case.• At day’s end, you can review your pictures and toss the ones you don’t like.• The video component will enhance your stills. Good ol’ moving pictures!• Pro tip: Horizontal, horizontal, horizontal for video! Vertical videos are only good for alliteration.

CHECK THE WEATHER OFTEN IN THE DAYS LEADING UP TO TRAVELLINGJust because you may be heading to Philadelphia, doesn’t mean it’s always sunny.• Check long, mid and short term forecasts for where you’re headed to and pack accordingly.

• With free weather apps providing up to date forecasts, packing an extra sweater for a California trip (or shorts for the Rockies) may come in handy.

GET LOCALIZEDSure, the pretty brochures may illustrate the most popular attractions, but the locals know the real scoop. Yes, Niagara Falls and the Maid of the Mist score plenty of popularity points, but only a local will know where to get the best ice cream in Niagara-On-The-Lake, or the best steakhouse off the strip or even the best live music spots.

DO YOUR HOMEWORKThere are so many festivals and events happening year round that your travel dates are bound to align with something. Dig a bit and find out some of the lower-key events that are interesting and worth at-tending. They may not be as popular as others but you could stumble upon something that’s right up your alley.

Safe travels, friends.

21MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2016

With taxi drivers staging protests, Toronto attempting to introduce a framework for regulating ride-sharing, and Mississauga asking Uber to suspend operations while it studies its options, it’s important to understand where all sides are coming from.

WHAT IS UBER?Uber is a mobile phone app that lets you request a car to take you from Point A to Point B. There are a number of different tiers and car types, but when most people talk about Uber, they mean UberX, which is a regular person using their own car to drive people around for money.

SO IT’S A TAXI?Yes and no. Uber is functionally the same as a taxi, but they don’t abide by the same regulations that taxis do, which is why taxi drivers are so upset.

WHAT KINDS OF REGULATIONS?Taxi licences are limited by the cities that they operate in, whereas Uber can theoretically put an unlimited number of cars on the road. Taxis are also required to have special insurance, background checks, driver training, and meet specific vehicle inspection/maintenance requirements. Uber has its own background check and vehicle inspection/maintenance rules, but some consider them less onerous than what taxis have to deal with. Taxis also charge metered fares that are regulated by the city, while Uber sets their own rates.

THAT SOUNDS PRETTY UNFAIR TO TAXIS!It definitely puts them at a disadvantage, which is why new rules are needed – both to ease the regulatory burden on taxis and to bring Uber under a reasonable regulatory framework.

IS UBER ILLEGAL IN MISSISSAUGA?Currently, yes. Uber drivers in Mississauga can be fined for operating and/or owning a taxicab without a licence. Also, most Uber drivers are using personal insurance that isn’t valid for commercial use (like driving passengers in exchange for money) – if their insurance company finds out, they can cancel their insurance policy, which makes being an Uber driver an especially risky proposition.

WILL I GET IN TROUBLE FOR USING UBER AS A PASSENGER?No. There are no bylaws against being a passenger. Some people feel that the different (and possibly looser) requirements for Uber vs. taxis makes them less safe, but there’s no evidence to support that.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING UBER?When you request an Uber, you’re given the driver’s name, make and model of the car, and their licence plate number, which means you always know who is picking you up. Uber charges a credit card that you put on file with the app, which means you never have to fumble with cash or worry about swiping a machine – you just get in the car and get out at your destination. A receipt is automatically emailed to you with the route you took and a breakdown of the charges. It then requests a rating for the driver out of 5; if their rating drops below 4.6, they are at risk of being deactivated from the Uber system, which helps maintain the quality of the drivers and the experience.

WHAT ARE THE DRAWBACKS OF USING UBER?When demand outstrips the supply of drivers, Uber initiates “surge pricing” – which means they charge you more, because their fares aren’t regulated like taxis. This can get extremely expensive on busy nights like Halloween and New Year’s Eve. Also, while Uber can take you to Pearson International Airport, they can’t pick you up from there – you would have to use their (much more expensive) UberBlack service, which meets the licencing requirements.

BASICS: What you need to knowby bil kanawati

DID YOU KNOW…In addition to rating your drivers out of five stars, they are also rating you on the same five-star system. If your rating drops too low, drivers may be more reluctant to accept your requests. You can check your rating in the app by going to Settings » Help » Account » I’d like to know my rating.

I’ve gotta hand it to the folks over at Lincoln, as they were fashionably late to the luxury compact crossover party. Maybe they took too long getting dressed, or perhaps all the close parking spots were taken. Perhaps they meant to be late so that upon arrival, everyone would swoon over how handsome/beautiful they look and how it was worth the wait to see them. Or could it be that Mr. Southern Gentleman himself, Matthew McConaughey took too long in the shower. Whatever the reason, they’re here now and they’ve shown up dressed to the nines and thoroughly beautiful. The 2016 Lincoln MKC compact crossover is helping reinvent the luxury brand, which up until recently, had seemed to have lost its way amidst other premium competitors’ offerings in different segments. The team at Lincoln must’ve taken a few cues from “The tortoise and the hare” tale as they’re giving the others a run for their money. With the MKC, Lincoln presents a high quality, great looking vehicle full of luxurious

materials that targets the affluent millennials (although with its subtle taller stance and premium positioning, it’s ideal for Gen X & Y folks as well) who want a luxury car and are looking outside of the usual suspects. Appearance wise, I give full marks to the design team. They’ve crafted beauty, elegance, and style, paired it with athletic looks, smooth yet defined lines and top notch materials. Kind of like pairing aged cheddar with a vintage California red wine. Or Guinness and a steak, for you non-wine drinkers out there. Their signature split-wing grille, wrap around head and tail lights, HID headlights with LED accents and standard 18” wheels frame the MKC quite well, with their digital welcome mat (Lincoln logo) projected beside the front doors from beneath the rear view mirrors offering a stylish touch. The MKC simply has a gorgeous look from any angle and clearly fits in with its other luxury crossover brethren. Out of the box, you’ll get a 2.0L I4 Eco-

Boost engine good for 240 horsepower and 270 lb-ft. or torque through a six-speed automatic transmission. If you want additional pep in your step, Lincoln offers an upgraded 2.3L I4 Eco-Boost engine with 285 horsepower and 305 lb-ft. of torque via a six-speed automatic gearbox. Both engines perform best at the recommended 93 octane rating. To me, there’s not enough distance between the two and I imagine the majority of MKC’s on the road will be happily humming along with the smaller engine. If the 2.3L engine was the same one used in the Mustang (310 HP/320 lb-ft. of torque) then the shift may have leaned the other way. Besides, the 2.0L engine produced plenty of power to move the MKC with smooth, agile (for its class) handling, responsive steering, strong acceleration, and a high overall fun to drive factor. Acceleration is fairly quick to get you on the highway and out of potentially unsafe situations. Fuel economy for the 2.0L is 12.4 city and

9.0L highway for L/100km (the 2.3 rates as 12.8 and 9.1) but as with nearly all real-world experiences, the figures will vary. Even with the Active Grille Shutters on the MKC, I found it to be slightly heavier on fuel consumption than what the window sticker claimed. The 59 litre fuel tank can be optimized in highway conditions and by not racing to the next red light in the city. Throw in a superb ride quality score in drive mode and a very sporty feel in, well, Sport mode, and you’ve got the makings of a vehicle that thrives on the throttle being pushed. Yes, there are paddle shifters if you choose to do the shifting instead of the engine. Even in city surroundings, the quiet cabin (thanks to Lincoln’s Active Noise Control technology) and higher seating position will calm your nerves when the fellow in front of you brakes for no reason, turns without his blinker, all while texting and getting mad at you. Inside, the luxury continues with high end materials, including an available hand stitched, Wollsdorf leather steering wheel, real wood trim and remarkably comfortable Bridge of Weir Deepsoft leather seats. A 10-way power heated driver’s seat is standard (a 10 way passenger power heated seat is standard on Select and Reserve trims) and adds to an overall beautiful fit and finish. On the Reserve trim, heated and cooled seats come standard. Similar to most five-seater vehicles, rear seating accommodates three but is truly comfortable for two. It’s not that the rear seats are overly small. Rather, being the one stuck in the middle seat is an unenviable position in even the most spacious of seating sections. Cargo space comes in at 712 litres behind the rear seats and 1,505 litres behind the front seats. As is now the way with Lincoln, the push button shifter frees up plenty of space and is integrated nicely into the centre console. It’ll take a couple of “ghost-grabs” at an imaginary, traditional shift lever the first few times but it’s an innovative change that you’ll get used to. The standard 8” color touch screen infotainment system (which does everything you expect from a modern luxury vehicle aside from spit out winning lottery numbers) features the much-anticipated SYNC 3 interface. And yes, the improvements are noticeable. It’s more responsive, intuitive and easier to navigate compared to the outgoing offering. The improved voice-recognition also is a welcomed change and I had no issues in the system mishearing or misidentifying what I was asking for.

The optional choice of seven different interior ambient light colors is a nice touch, along with the standard approach detection lighting from the door handles. Tech wise, there’s a hands free-kicking motion activated lift gate system (still one of my favourite innovations) with an option for the usual safety features (blind spot warning, adaptive cruise control, forward sensing system, lane keep assist, and driver alert system) and the available 14-speaker, enhanced THX II audio system will fill the cabin with all the sounds you want (and possibly drown out the sounds you don’t). And yes, a back-up camera is standard on all trims. Standard on the Reserve model is a huge panoramic sunroof that floods the cabin with natural light and gives the MKC a much bigger feel space-wise. Lincoln has prepared a great alternative to what the luxury crossover market is used to in the MKC. While still in its infancy (relatively speaking, of course), their combination of standard AWD, great looks, a gorgeous and high quality interior along with a starting price just beneath $40,000 will give buyers something to strongly consider. With tech as a strong influencer, the SYNC 3 works in the MKC’s favour. Expect to see more of this recent offering on the road as it’s a strong alternative to enter or remain in the luxury crossover market and it’s illustrating that the Lincoln brand is indeed alive and kicking. While it’s one thing to be fashionably late, as with most things in life, timing certainly is everything.

24 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2016

In 1974, the City of Mississauga was incorporated through the amalgamation of the Town of Mississauga and the villages of Port Credit and Streetsville, along with sections of Toronto Gore and Trafalgar townships. Square One Shopping Centre had just been built, the current Civic Centre was still over a decade away, and the landscape looked very different than it does today. This year, Mississauga turns 42. To celebrate, all of us at Modern Mississauga wanted to share 42 things (in no particular order) that we feel make Mississauga special.

why we loveMISSISSAUGA

ABSOLUTE TOWERS Completed in 2012, the two aptly nicknamed “Marilyn Monroe” buildings have won international design awards including the Emporis Skyscraper Award and the CTBUH Best Tall Buildings Americas award. Their unmistakable curves have reshaped the Mississauga skyline for generations to come.

ART GALLERY OF MISSISSAUGA Located on the ground floor of the Civic Centre building, the AGM is a hub for all things art and artistic in our fine city. In addition to a rotating selection of exhibits and special events, the staff at the AGM actively engage with patrons, offering up insights and information to anyone who approaches. Best of all, admission is free!

LIVE MUSIC SCENE Port Credit has an incredibly vibrant live music scene, with both Roc’ N’ Docs and Shore Grill & Grotto hosting performers 7 nights a week, and Spice Lounge showcasing one of the most eclectic open mic nights we’ve ever seen (every Wednesday). After the Harp closed its doors, its legendary Monday night jam, where members of the crowd get to perform with the band, found a new home at Shore and it’s going as strong as ever. Did we mention it’s hosted by Tom Barlow, a four-time Juno nominee?

LIVING ARTS CENTRE This 225,000 square foot multi-use facility is on the verge of turning 20 next year and still looks and feels beautiful. The premier venue in our city for entertainment and performances, it attracts international and local talent from musicians to artists to graduation ceremonies and plenty in between. We’ve seen everything from Italian opera to Matthew Good performed here, and the acoustics never disappoint.

INDIE ICE CREAM SHOPS Between Murphy’s, Dairy Cream, Port 1 Cafe and Dairy King (among others), there’s no shortage of local spots to get fresh, delicious ice cream from. Forget the chain dessert places, go out into the community and embrace the long lineups as a sign that the quality is great!

KARIYA PARK Opened in 1992, this scene of serenity honours the relationship with our sister city, Kariya, Japan. You don’t need to fight throngs of angry tourists at High Park in Toronto just to see cherry blossoms in bloom - you can enjoy their beauty right here in Mississauga!

CELEBRATION SQUARE Since its grand reopening in June 2011, this has become the go-to destination for big events, seeing its millionth visitor a little over a year later in October 2012. It hosts the official New Year’s Eve party, movies in the summer, Ribfest and lots of other stuff, but we’ll never forget seeing Carly Rae Jepsen there for Canada Day a few years ago with 130,000 of our fellow citizens. That’s over 1/6th of the population of Mississauga!

SQUARE ONE Gunning for Yorkdale’s top spot in the “parking nightmares” category, Square One has seen some growing pains, but what do you expect when you’re as old as the city itself? A true representation of the city’s diverse demographic, this is oneof the few malls where Walmart and Holt Renfrew (coming soon!) can coexist. Oh, and there’s a roundabout which still confuses people.

STREETSVILLE VILLAGE SQUARE Reopened in 2014 after a multi-million dollar reconstruction, this square is as unique as Streetsville itself, hosting live music, yoga, movie nights, festivals, ceremonies and much more. There’s something about a Christmas tree-lighting ceremony on a brick road surrounded by heritage buildings that feels truly unique.

CHERRY HILL Is this heritage building haunted? Probably. Has its basement bar “permanently closed” and reopened more times than we can count? Definitely. Everything about this place is slightly odd in the best way possible, and if you’re in the Cawthra and Dundas area, it’s worth checking out - if only to remind yourself that underneath that slick suburban veneer, Mississauga can still be a little weird.

CULTURAL DIVERSITY – With over forty different languages spoken by Mississaugans (according to Heritage Mississauga), our cultural diversity is reflected in everything from our cuisine to the arts to the welcoming and supportive attitudes towards refugees. Our inclusiveness makes our city a better place for everyone.

PEARSON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT While it may be referred to as “Toronto Pearson,” it’s actually Mississauga that lays claim to the largest and busiest airport in Canada, with over 41 million passengers a year, 75 operating airlines, and around 1,100 daily departures.

MALTON AVRO ARROW Canada’s first supersonic aircraft, believed to be years ahead of its time, was entirely designed and built right here in Malton. Rumours of an on-again-off-again project to revive the Canadian Air & Space Museum (and potentially its replica Avro Arrow) in Mississauga still abound.

VIBRANT FOOD SCENE From fine dining to fast-casual and everything in between, Mississauga’s food scene has you covered. Whatever you’re looking for, whether it’s a new restaurant from Chopped Canada judge and celebrity chef Massimo Capra, or a hole-in-the-wall shwarma place, you’re guaranteed to find some of the best and most unique culinary delights anywhere.

METALWORKS STUDIOS One of Canada’s largest and most prominent recording studios, the client list at Metalworks includes local artists and international superstars such as Drake, Christina Aguilera, and even the late David Bowie.

CARASSAUGA Mississauga’s festival of cultures is the largest multicultural festival in Ontario, and the second-largest in all of Canada. Over 300,000 visitors come to experience the rich ethnic traditions expressed through cuisine, cultural performances and more every year.

SHERIDAN COLLEGE HAZEL MCCALLION CAMPUS Home to Sheridan College’s Faculty of Business, this state-of-the-art campus is located in downtown Mississauga and named after our beloved former mayor, who was recently named Sheridan College’s first chancellor. It’s been so popular since it opened in 2011 that an expansion project (slated for completion in September 2016), was put in place to accommodate a total enrollment of approximately 5,500 students, more than doubling its initial capacity of 2300 students.

UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO MISSISSAUGA Also known as Erindale College, this gorgeous campus set on the valley of the Credit River is home to nearly 14,000 students of the University of Toronto, one of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning in the world.

LIBRARIES & COMMUNITY CENTRES Mississauga’s libraries and community centres offer more than just books and swimming classes. Did you know that the Mississauga Library System has cutting-edge resources for coding, 3D printing, and robotics, and that our community centres offer programs for yoga, ballet, and creative writing?

TIM HORTONS SOUTHSIDE SHUFFLE BLUES & RIB FESTIVAL Over 70,000 people a year attend this weekend festival in Port Credit. With a variety of music, food, and entertainment, it’s one of the things we look forward to every September.

STREETSVILLE FOUNDERS’ BREAD & HONEY FESTIVAL Held at Streetsville Memorial Park, this weekend event in June has been running since 1973 and features live performances, carnival games, a market with over 100 vendors, and a parade running through Streetsville. Also, free bread & honey!

MEADOWVALE THEATRE The Meadowvale Theatre has been bringing music, drama, comedy, dance, and musical theatre to the city’s northwest end since 1989. In addition to putting on stellar performances, they also hold workshops and summer drama camps for youth.

HEARTLAND TOWN CENTRE With over 2 million square feet of retail space, this outdoor mall is among the largest in Canada. Start at the corner of Mavis & Britannia and work your way through more than 160 stores and restaurants!

CREDIT RIVER This river winds its way through the city, through Port Credit, Streetsville, and beyond. One of our favourite places to enjoy it is through the scenic and beautiful Erindale Park, where the more adventurous can also fish and canoe.

JACK DARLING MEMORIAL PARK Located at the waterfront south of Lorne Park, this green space has one of the largest off-leash dog parks in Ontario and a fantastic picnic area right by the lake.

RATTRAY MARSH CONSERVATION AREA Close to Jack Darling but worthy of its own entry, this is

the last remaining lakefront marsh between Toronto and Burlington. An ideal spot for bird watchers and nature lovers

of any kind, with wooded trails that are worth experiencing through multiple seasons.

STREETSVILLE HISTORICAL SOCIETY With a rich, storied legacy and the highest concentration of historical buildings in Mississauga, Streetsville has a history worth preserving. Check out the archives Wednesdays and Sundays from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm at the Leslie Log House (built in 1826!) for a peek into the past.

HAZEL MCCALLION One of Canada’s longest-serving mayors, “Hurricane Hazel” spent 36 years making Mississauga what it is today. Her fierce personality and tireless dedication to our city can be felt everywhere, with a public school, health centre, and college campus being just some of the many places that bear her name.

BIKE LANES & TRAILS With over 400 kilometres of dedicated bike lanes, trails and “bicycle friendly” roadways, getting around the city in a healthy and environmentally friendly way has never been easier.

PORT CREDIT LIGHTHOUSE A working lighthouse that is visible 15 miles out on Lake Ontario, it’s easy to see why this is the most photographed building in Mississauga. Don’t forget to check out the great views of the harbour from the deck!

MUSICIANS FROM MISSISSAUGA This city is known for producing great musical talent, including Streetsville rockers Billy Talent, singer/songwriter Suzie McNeil, and Natalie Appleton of the 90s pop sensation All Saints.

PLAYDIUM Those who remember it when it was known as Sega City will always have a place in their hearts for the arcade games and go karts at this entertainment complex. A second location in downtown Toronto was short-lived, leaving Mississauga the undisputed king of this type of entertainment complex.

343536373839404142

SCOOTER’S ROLLER PALACE Roller skating is a timeless activity that’s fun for all ages, and don’t let anybody tell you otherwise. As one of the only roller rinks in the GTA, this place caters to everything from children’s birthday parties to weekend date nights, with late night skate till 3 am on the first Saturday of every month!

BUSINESS & ECONOMY In addition to being a great place to live, Mississauga is also a great place to work - the head offices of over 60 Fortune 500 companies are located here, including Wal-Mart, General Electric, FedEx, UPS, Hewlett-Packard, Mattel, and Microsoft, just to name a few. It’s no wonder that Mississauga is a net importer of jobs – more people come here to work than commute out.

ERIN MILLS TOWN CENTRE Long-time residents have watched this space transform heavily over the years, but even those who remember the mini-golf and movie theatre era will be impressed by its $100 million makeover. However, only time will tell whether the arguments between Team Clock Tower and Team Glass Sphere will ever be put to rest.

BRAEBEN GOLF COURSE Boasting the highest land viewpoint in the city, it’s hard to imagine that this stunning “highlands-style terrain” was once a landfill. It also produces a significant amount of renewable energy, putting the ‘green’ back in the greens.

INTERNATIONAL CENTRE This convention centre is older than the city of Mississauga itself. It hosts over 450 shows and events each year, and brings in visitors from all over the world thanks to its convenient location just minutes from the airport.

MISSISSAUGA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Combining amateur musicians with professional section leaders, the MSO boasts a well-earned reputation as the best hybrid orchestra in Canada. Its varied and exciting repertoires run the gamut from Beethoven to Star Wars, ensuring a memorable experience no matter what your musical preferences are.

MUSEUMS OF MISSISSAUGA The Bradley Museum and Benares Historic House are redefining what “heritage” means, with interactive cultural exhibitions set in these beautifully restored 19th century buildings. Their Living Heritage collections contain everything from aboriginal artifacts to Hazel McCallion memorabilia.

FARMER’S MARKETS Proving that you can still get that small-town feel in Ontario’s third-largest city, farmer’s markets provide plenty of options for fresh, seasonal, locally-grown food, with several markets near Square One, Streetsville, Port Credit, and elsewhere.

PROXIMITY Did you know that Mississauga is the only city in the GTA serviced by seven major highways? It’s true! We counted: 401, 403, 407, 409, 410, 427, and the QEW.

My mission is to help people get active. That involves creativity and thinking outside of the norm. We’re all different and we all have a unique formula to get us fit.”

ALICIA’S MOST VALUABLE FITNESS PRINCIPLES:There’s no such thing as one size fits all. She jokes, “That doesn’t work for pantyhose and it doesn’t work for people.” Your exercise program should be as unique as you are. The only way to find what works is to get truly connected with you.1. Logging is key: No matter how tedious you think it is, you have to log your food and fitness activity. At least for the first 6 weeks. You begin to hold yourself accountable for your actions. You get insight into foods that may cause irritation and weight gain. You see whether you’re as active as you originally believed.2. Find your internal “why”: If you’re losing weight for a wedding or to look good on the beach, that’s great, but those are superficial factors that disappear. The more personal your weight loss goals, the better. The goals should signify a deep meaning that is personal to you. If you’re doing it because you feel so happy when you have the energy to play with your kids, or you feel more accomplished because you can move from task to task with ease, then you’re more likely to stick with your goals even after big events come and go.

Christina Nowak is an up and coming fitness expert you must watch out for. She is an NSCA fitness coach and physiotherapist for Element Cross Fit, and is currently completing a PhD focusing on preventing the decline of strength as we get older. She’s enabled clients who were previously walker-dependent to go walker-free and conditioned clients in their mid-80s to advanced fitness levels where they were successfully completing complicated movements such as burpees. Her website, Stave Off (http://www.staveoff.ca/) provides informative programming and health information for the aging population.

CHRISTINA SAYS: “As we age, we are placed at increased risk of different illnesses that may make people believe that they cannot exercise when they can! My hope is to work on health PREVENTION so that we don’t get sick (or more sick!) or lose our independence as we age.” Are you over the age of 60? If you are over the age of 60 and not currently doing any strength training or physio, Christina is currently recruiting participants for a research trial that aims to start in February. Please do not hesitate to email her at [email protected]

CHRISTINA’S MOST VALUABLE FITNESS PRINCIPLE:Sometimes it is fear that prevents a person from taking the next step and asking for help with fitness. She hopes the following tips provide the confidence and understanding that strength training is appropriate (and imperative) for individuals at any age (As long as you scale your progress appropriately).1. Incorporate Strength Training: Strength training is the cornerstone of maintaining your movement and independence in your 40s, 50s, 60s or even 90s!2. Sometimes a picture says a 1000 words but it doesn’t say the correct ones: bone on bone arthritis in the knee or bulging discs in the back frequently do not relate to the level of pain of movement that a person may have.

FLAVIO GRACILE

CRYSTAL MALLARI

Flavio Gracile is a force to be reckoned with, specializing in strength of both the body and mind. He’s the founder of Fitness Battalion, the unique 10,000 square foot fitness facility housing everything from obstacle courses to power racks and Olympic specialty bars. He’s ISSA certified in both fitness and nutrition as well as a Seal Fit graduate. If you’re looking for the latest weight loss fad or quick weight loss fix, look elsewhere. Flavio’s no-nonsense fitness approach is for those willing to be honest with themselves about the true effort it takes to create positive lasting change.

FLAVIO SAYS: “[I work with] people who are finished with fads and convenience and want to make a real commitment and real improvement. I think a lot of people get wrapped up in the promise of losing that 20 pounds or gaining that six-pack, without considering the reality of what it takes…Our bodies are truly marvels of engineering with vast capabilities. We should therefore be able to develop our capabilities with an open minded wonder for how far we can go physically, mentally and spiritually.”

FLAVIO’S MOST VALUABLE FITNESS PRINCIPLE:Before you take your first steps towards fitness, make sure you want it badly enough to put in the effort and do the work.1. Fitness and proper dieting are each a process of trial and error: Expect to make mistakes and at times fail. Errors and failures are lessons, not reasons to quit.2. Remember that growth happens outside your comfort zone: You must be prepared to be uncomfortable in order to reach whatever goal you’ve set for yourself. You must decide if your desire for your goal is greater than your desire to be comfortable.

10 years ago, Crystal Mallari transitioned from a career as a top performing artist on stages such as Mirvish to a career as a vivacious Fat Loss Expert, Personal Trainer, Fitness Instructor and Life Coach. She now brings her dynamic personality to her very own fitness studio, R3 Evolution. This boutique style studio specializes in small group classes and online fitness classes that give you the sensation of one-on-one personal training but in a class environment. Crystal also performs 20 minute workouts on R3VOLVE Life Fitness on Mississauga’s Rogers TV (airing February 2016).

CRYSTAL SAYS: “All that matters is that you try. Give it your best. That’s all.” With Crystal it doesn’t matter what fitness level you’re at or what size you are.

CRYSTAL’S MOST VALUABLE FITNESS PRINCIPLE: 1.Joinafitnesscommunity:At a “big box” gym, you are a number (a credit card number) and not necessarily a name. Join a community where people know who you are, where each member will encourage other members to keep going! In fact, it’s about being more than a community - it’s about being a family… a FIT FAMILY!2. Change up your workouts regularly: The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results. Choose classes that are different, or studios where you’ll never be doing the same class twice.

Alex Cibiri’s powerful demeanor and thirst for knowledge has given rise to a whole new approach to CrossFit. As the owner of Elements CrossFit and a CrossFit coach, Alex shows young and middle-aged professionals a fun and innovative way to get fit. Alex places a strong emphasis on proper form, full range of motion and proper technique before applying the higher intensities needed to reach outstanding fitness levels. Whether you’re learning new techniques or applying them with vigor, the most important component is that you keep moving and have fun.

ALEX SAYS: “It’s not about magazine covers and photo shoots, it’s about being better than you were yesterday and enjoying the journey while learning along the way. Have fun using your body for what it was designed to do – move. Take care of your body and it’ll take care of you!”

ALEX’S MOST VALUABLE FITNESS PRINCIPLE:Fitness is not about perfection or 6-pack abs. Fitness is about wanting to be a little better every day - learning from your mistakes when you mess up and using that to make you better in the future.1. Squat – period: “I’m talking full depth crease-of-the-hip-below- top-of-the-knee squats.” You don’t have to do the same thing every day. Change it up - Squat Light. Squat Heavy. Back Squat. Front Squat. Overhead Squat. Medicine Ball Squat. Kettlebell Goblet Squat. Just squat, period. Your body will love you and it translates to all areas of your fitness. Bonus points if you can squat every day!2. Develop habits singularly: This holds true especially for long-term nutritional changes. One at a time. The biggest mistake many people make is trying to change 10 things all at once and then being devastated when they fall short of absolute perfection a few weeks later. Make an effort to spend at least two months developing any new habit you want to add to improve your lifestyle. And when one is set, then decide to add in another. Don’t forget, contrary to common beliefs it takes as much as 60 days to develop a habit, so don’t get defeated if you fall off once or twice on your way. Get back up and work at it until it’s cemented in your brain.

I think every couple I know (my guy and myself included) tries to have a date night each week. This is not exactly a novel concept and we all know the reasons for making it happen; spending quality time with each other that doesn’t involve the day to day responsibilities of raising children, paying the bills, grocery shopping, chores around the house etc., etc., etc. I’m not going to preach about the importance of date nights to keep your relationship healthy as chances are you agree if you’re still reading. Rather, I’m going to give you some ideas of how to keep date night interesting. Personally, I find repetition boring, but it’s really easy to go to the same restaurant, eat the same food and have the same date night every week. Time goes by, work gets busy, you stop planning things and just do the same thing without even realizing it. For some of us, date night could end up feeling like one of the weekly chores if it’s not something fun and engaging to look forward to. So here are some ideas for breathing life back into date night. 1. GO SOMEWHERE YOU’VE NEVER BEEN BEFORE. We are all creatures of habit and we like what makes us feel comfortable. Get out of your comfort zone. It could be a new restaurant, it could be a different movie theatre, a new walking trail or maybe even checking out a different city that’s only 45 minutes away. After all, variety is the spice of life and changing things up a bit, however small that change is, can be pretty exhilarating.

2. SWITCH ROLES. If one partner usually plans the date night, let the other partner plan it, start to finish. The key here is to be open and non-critical. Just enjoy the night and be open to what your partner wants to do that’s different. For the partner who usually does all

of the planning, this can be a really nice and relaxing treat. For the partner who doesn’t usually plan, this is a great way to show your partner how much you appreciate the effort they put into date night.

3. BUY A NEW OUTFIT, BOTH OF YOU! Dress up a bit and give each other compliments. It’s so easy to get into a style (or lack thereof ) rut when you know your partner loves you for who you are and not what you wear - I am definitely guilty of this. But you know what? It feels so good when your partner tells you how good you look! Guys, put on a suit jacket with your usual jeans and shirt (SUCH a turn on). Ladies, style your hair, wear something revealing along with a pair of heals. So simple and yet so effective.

4. TAKE A DANCE CLASS. Who cares if you have 2 left feet, just go and have fun! I guarantee you there will be lots of laughter. Being this close to your partner in a new and exciting situation is a bonus!

5. GO BACK TO THE PLACE WHERE YOU HAD YOUR FIRST DATE. This is ALWAYS a great way to reminisce about times past, to see how rich and wonderful your relationship has become over the years and just enjoy your memories.

6. TALK ABOUT THE NEXT DATE NIGHT DURING THE CURRENT DATE NIGHT. Come up with a loose plan for a different and new experience which will give you both something to look forward to during the week. Sending short and sweet emails saying how much you’re looking forward to your date night will make it even more exciting. Most of all,

have fun!

Starting this year, the City of Mississauga’s Stormwater Program will be funded with a new stormwater charge, which appears on the Region of Peel water bill for Mississauga properties. Mississauga is Canada’s sixth largest city and we are one of many municipalities across the country experiencing very rapid growth. New developments increase the amount of hard surfaces that direct rain and melted snow into our drainage system. Changes to our climate bring heavier rainfalls and more rapid spring thaw events. These changes mean more stormwater is entering our system than ever before, causing costly wear and tear on aging infrastructure. The City of Mississauga owns nearly $2 billion in stormwater infrastructure that must be properly maintained and expanded upon to protect water quality and reduce the risks of flooding that can damage homes, businesses and our

environment. The stormwater charge is expected to raise $33 million in 2016, allowing for new and necessary investments in this essential infrastructure. The funds can only be used for stormwater services and programs as stated in the City’s new Stormwater Fees and Charges By-law. With the new charge, a property owner’s relative contribution to the funding of the stormwater program is no longer based on the value of the property. Instead, it is based on the extent of hard surfaces. This is more fair, since the impact a property has on the stormwater system is unrelated to land value. Commercial, industrial, institutional and multi- residential buildings will be charged for the total area of hard surfaces on their property, including buildings and parking lots. In 2016, these properties will be charged $100 for every 267 m2 of hard surface area. Residential properties will be put into one of five tiers, using rooftop area as the indicator of total hard surface, and will pay a set rate for their tier. Eighty percent of residential property owners will be charged $100 or less in 2016, divided among their quarterly water bills. The City is also introducing new programs that engage landowners in stormwater management. By taking this proactive step to safeguard our infrastructure for the future, Mississauga has set itself apart as a leader in the industry. The new stormwater charge is considered a strong example for other municipalities across Canada to learn from.

While some may have fallen at those words, Jim believes in visualizing success. “See what you want things to be,” he says to me with astute confidence. Despite opening a new store with minimal inventory, he had ambition, confidence and knew that if he stayed the course, he’d start seeing success, despite it being early days.

As word spread about The Guitar World and their unmatched customer service, day by day, more and more curious folks walked through the doors at 6435 Erin Mills Parkway, a couple of clicks north of Britannia. And of course, with more customers came more guitars. And more guitars. And even more guitars. He’s got some quality brand names in the store that come in acoustic and electric form. He’s got bass guitars. Heck, he even channeled his inner Ned Flanders and has left handed guitars! Not to mention plenty of amplifiers and accessories, for the beginners right up to the experts and everything in between.

Jim and his team believe in educating customers, and that it’s not always about the almighty dollar. He prefers establishing, building and growing relationships with customers, rather than a transactional customer experience. And I, for one, absolutely agree.

As the saying goes, customers may forget what you said, but they’ll never forget how you made them feel, and converting first timers into long standing customers is no easy task, regardless of what industry you’re in.

Yes, the money will come but happy customers are armed with the most influential tool: their voice, which results in referrals, which Jim has received plenty of over his 13 years of owning The Guitar World.

It’s not just guitars and accessories that keep the register singing; he also offers lessons, available in 14 different rooms through a variety of talented, friendly and encouraging instructors. It’s quite smart to offer lessons under the same roof that you sell the instruments – a customer who plays their instrument regularly is usually happier than one who sticks it in the closet after a few weeks.

The Guitar World also offers a thorough repair service for not only items purchased in store, but for any guitar. It’s like having an automobile showroom, service bay and driving instructors all in the same place.

Jim notes that with the rise in online instrument purchases, he’s seen a dramatic increase in his repair business. He credits this to the ever growing amount of consumers buying guitars based on website images opposed to picking up the guitar itself. He’s not out to gouge these online shoppers when they come to him saying their guitar needs fixing, though. Jim and his team are very thorough in explaining the repair issues and making recommendations. It’d be easy to say “it’s broken, $XXX to fix it,” but the house that customer service built thrives on transparency, honesty and giving customers all their options.

This piece on Jim wouldn’t be complete without touching on the “Kara’s Guitar” story.

Kara Shred, a young and talented Mississauga musician and graphic artist, tragically passed away in September 2013. She and her family were customers of Jim and at her parents’ request to have her semi-hollow body custom guitar not be forgotten in a case, they asked Jim

13 years ago this February, Jim Toris, owner of The Guitar World in north Mississauga, set out with a clear and simple vision: to provide astounding and unmatched customer service, fair pricing, a great selection and expert advice.

Pretty standard business practices, right? Well, some things are easy to say, but prove difficult to execute. Jim’s found a way, through perseverance and by treating every customer like they’re the only customer.

It’s been a long road for Mr. Toris. From humble beginnings working at MusicPlex in Brampton in the early 90s, to a golf club based business through the early 2000s, he nostalgically says, “I still remember the smell of the fresh carpet when I opened the doors for the first time.”

Once the doors opened, he had less than 10 guitars (he’s got over 200 now) in the 1,850 sq.ft store. He even brought in guitars from his personal collection to make the walls look less vacant. Hey, everyone’s gotta start somewhere and be resourceful while they’re at it.

He remembers an “early days” customer who asked “Are you going out of business or is this a new store?” Ouch. “See what you want things to be.”

if he could keep it at The Guitar World and let anyone play it to help keep Kara’s memory alive.

Of course Jim enthusiastically agreed and now over 120 people that have played Kara’s guitar. Most famously is Bon Jovi’s guitarist, Mississauga’s own Phil Xenidis, who played Kara’s guitar at the Air Canada Centre in November of 2013 to the wildly popular hit “Dead or Alive.”

Phil heard the story and quickly connected with Jim, expressing his interest in being a part of this heart-warming story. It was a moving experience for the Shred family, knowing that their daughter’s memory will continuously move forward via the power of music and her now famous guitar.

A modest man, Jim gives his staff plenty of praise for making The Guitar World into what it is today. He’s got an army of happy, loyal and long-time customers who fiercely support him and works diligently to show new customers the same respect. He takes the time to connect with each customer in store and has even run into the

parking lot if he’s accidentally missed saying goodbye and thank you to someone.

He’s a great talker, evidenced by some cool rock and roll stories he shared with me during our few hours together. He’s an even better listener, as that’s what you need to do with your clients. There aren’t pushy sales people here - only educated staff who know that it’s the customer service aspect that separates them from the rest.

As a new father, Jim is carefully planning his next steps and while he couldn’t disclose what’s coming next, he did assure me that it’s something big.

Until then, there’s plenty to keep him busy with a burgeoning customer base wanting instruments, lessons and repairs from an established entrepreneur who has shown us that if you build it well with customer service, they most certainly will come.

And stay.

POINTS SYSTEMS. PC Plus Points are a good way to earn some cash back on your groceries.

PRICE MATCHING. It’ll take some effort to wade through the various flyers but you’ll have a chance to save some cash as a result. Again, check with your grocery store first to see if they engage in this activity. A great way to compare flyers right from your smart-phone or tablet is the Flipp app, which has flyers for all the major grocers and lets you add virtual clippings from each flyer for items you’re interested in purchasing later.

STOCK UP ON NON-PERISHABLE SALE ITEMS. Don’t go out and buy 100 boxes of “Product M,” but if it’s something you regularly consume, consider buying a few weeks’ worth of it. You’ve got to consider kitchen cupboard space as well when buying in large quantities.

BRING CASH ONLY. It’s a good discipline to have and ensures you won’t overspend. Tally your purchases as you put them in your shopping cart/basket so there won’t be any surprises at the checkout.

USE A WATER FILTER and reusable water bottle instead of cases of water. They may

only be a couple of bucks but it’s far more cost effective to filter your own water. Plus, it’s better for our environment.

BUY IN BULK. The Bulk Barn often offers reduced prices from what you see packaged in stores. As a secondary, Costco is a great option if you really need to stock up on non- perishables or if you have a larger family. Do some homework and project if your number of Costco visits will justify the membership cost. A handful of times? Probably not. Weekly or bi-weekly? Probably so.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF “BEST BEFORE” DATES. Most grocery stores will mark down meat as much as 50% if you’re purchasing it on the “Best Before” or “Sell By” date, turning those fancy $25 steaks into $12.50 bargains that you can throw on the grill tonight.

If you have your own tips and tricks for saving money on groceries, we’d love to hear them! Either email us at [email protected] or connect with us on social media. We’re friendly and always up for learning new things.

With the cost of feeding ourselves soaring, and groceries falling under the “necessities of life” column, we here at Modern Mississauga want to help save you some cash on this weekly venture. From timing to planning to a bit of pre-planning and other points in between, here are some ways to save money on food:

MAKE A THOROUGH LIST and plan your meals weekly. Stick to your list to avoid impulse shopping. While the bargain bins are attractive, they’re not always necessary.

AVOID SHOPPING HUNGRY because you’re at risk to make impulse purchases, stray from your list, and go over your budget.

LOOK INTO NO-NAME BRANDS. In some cases, they taste the same as the branded ones.

SHOP AT DISCOUNT GROCERY STORES for pre-packaged goods, such as butter, milk, cereal, eggs, pasta, etc.

COUPONS. Yes, they take a bit of effort to find but they’ll pay off at the checkout. Save.ca, Free.ca and CanadianFreeStuff.com are just a few of many sites to explore. Check with your grocery store to make sure they accept online coupons first, though, as some don’t. There are also apps such as Checkout51 that let you redeem coupons by simply taking a photo of your receipt, with a new list of offers every week.

EDEN FOOD FOR CHANGE: THE FRESH PRODUCE BOX SOLUTION

by christina philipsWith consistently rising food costs, Eden Food for Change have found a solution to the problem of skyrocketing produce prices through Eden Food for Change’s Fresh Produce Box program. In January 2014, the program officially launched as a way for people of all income levels to access fresh produce. Immediately, the number of orders steadily rose among a variety of groups in Mississauga. With the recent rise in prices for fruits and vegetables, Eden Food for Change (EFFC) has seen their orders increase by almost 40%. In December 2015 there were 135 small boxes and 151 large boxes ordered. By the last week of January there were 253 small boxes and 530 large boxes ordered by people looking for a solution to the dramatic increase of produce seen at grocery stores. “Our goal is to provide more good food for more people,” says EFFC’s Executive Director Bill Crawford. “Food that is financially cheap is often nutritionally cheap so we started this program to help give people struggling financially the option of healthy food at a more affordable rate than they would normally find.” Food prices at the Ontario Food Terminal, where EFFC purchases the produce for their boxes, have increased by 36% in the last year. However, with a more concerted effort for price comparison and negotiations with food vendors, the organization has managed to maintain the same number of items in their Fresh Produce Boxes as last year. Participants can expect around eight items in a $10 box with a $20 box providing an increased quantity of the same items, plus an additional two or three more items such as green beans and cauliflower. “Many people think this is a fundraiser for our organization, but it isn’t. We only take 10% to cover our costs,” explains Crawford. “We also make sure that we only buy for the number of people that have ordered that week to ensure cost-efficiency.” The program is open to anyone who is able to pick up their order at one of the six western Mississauga pick-up locations. Interested participants simply place their orders online at www.edenffc.org/fresh-produce-box by 4 pm on Thursdays. Contents for the boxes are purchased early on Friday mornings and then assembled by a team of volunteers with the boxes ready for distribution by Friday afternoon. The contents of the box can vary slightly from week to week, but a greater variety is seen during the local growing season. Eden Food for Change has been serving hungry families in western Mississauga for 25 years. The organization serves people through its two Food Bank locations, its Learning Kitchen and Fresh Produce Box program and has a vision of Good Food For All!

ROASTED VEGETABLE MEDLEY with CHICKEN THIGHSby kat maltarpBoneless, skinless chicken breasts may get most of the attention at the grocery store due to their low fat content and versatility, but chicken thighs are coming back in a big way - thighs are cheaper, more tender and more flavourful, with only slightly more fat than breast meat. This recipe combines the juicy flavour of chicken thighs with a healthy assortment of roasted veggies, leaving you satisfied and feeling great! Serves 3-4

INGREDIENTS6-8 chicken thighs (preferably boneless & skinless)1-2 tbsp butterSalt and pepper to taste3 large carrots, peeled and chopped into 1” pieces4 medium potatoes, cut into 1” pieces1 bunch pearl onions, peeled2 crowns of broccoli, chopped1/2 bunch kale, de-stemmed and ripped into pieces

MARINADE1/3 cup avocado oil or some other kind of high heat oil3 tbsp Dijon mustard2 tbsp lemon juice2 tsp garlic powder1 tsp paprika1 tsp dried oregano1 tsp salt1/2 tsp pepper

DIRECTIONS1. Preheat oven to 400F. If you have a convection option, use that.2. Rub chicken thighs with butter, salt and pepper. Place in a medium bowl and set aside.3. In a large glass measuring cup, mix avocado oil, Dijon mustard, lemon juice, spices and salt and pepper.4. Pour no more than half of the marinade over the chicken thighs and toss to coat. Set aside to marinate for 15 minutes.5. Meanwhile, prepare your veggies. In a large bowl, combine all veggies and pour the remaining marinade over veggies. Toss to coat. Add more salt and pepper if desired.6. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper and evenly distribute veggies onto sheets. Place chicken thighs on top of veggies evenly spaced out and cover each sheet with aluminum foil (discarding remaining marinade).7. Bake for 45 minutes, or until chicken is cooked to an internal temperature of 155F and veggies are fork-tender, taking aluminum foil off during the last 10 minutes of baking.Serve immediately and enjoy!

2014 BALANCE PINOT GRIS FROM THE NIAGARA COLLEGE TEACHING WINERY

TASTING NOTES:Rich fruit flavours mingle with the subtle, spicy kiss of oak, and the nutty, creamy influence of lees stirring in this blend of stainless steel and barrel fermented, barrel aged Pinot Gris. Golden apple, Bartlett pear and apple pie spice greet the nose, while the palate offers up silky smooth creamy textures with a warm, dry finish.

FOOD PAIRINGS:Try with Cedar-planked salmon or game pates.

WHY IT’S PERFECT FOR SPRING 2016:Spring is the perfect time to dust off the BBQ that has been stashed away for the long winter months. What better way to embrace the sunshine than with salmon grilled to perfection, paired with a crisp and fruity Pinot Gris?

2014 LAKEVIEW CELLARS KERNER

TASTING NOTES:The 2014 Lakeview Cellars Kerner displays notes of intense tropical and citrus fruits such as pineapple, mango, peach, grapefruit and lime with soft floral hints on the nose. The palate is lean but complex, starting sweet with floral flavours and balanced by a racy, lime acidity leading to a clean & refreshing finish.

FOOD PAIRINGS:Perfect with grilled chicken or shrimp pasta primavera.

WHY IT’S PERFECT FOR SPRING 2016:The Lakeview Cellars Kerner is crisp and flavourful making it an excellent spring wine to chill and sip on the deck on a sunny afternoon. It pairs well with grilled chicken or fish – so it’s also a great wine to enjoy when you finally pull the BBQ out of storage!

2014 KONZELMANN SHIRAZ

TASTING NOTES:Mild smoke, black cherry and pepper find their way to the nose and palate of this medium bodied Shiraz. Its well integrated tannin and lively mouth feel provide dimension against sweeter red fruit and vanilla flavours.

FOOD PAIRINGS:Black pepper steak, Angus beef or pulled pork would all be succulent complements to this spicy wine, but nearly any barbecued food will enhance its soft smokiness.

WHY IT’S PERFECT FOR SPRING 2016:Our Shiraz is the ideal wine to accompany your first Barbeque of the season. Medium in body, this wine pairs perfectly with a nice smoky burger. Everyone knows that it is officially the end of winter when you fire up the barbeque for the first time and this wine will pair perfectly with that moment!

2012 RIVERVIEW CELLARS CABERNET SAUVIGNON

TASTING NOTES:A smooth medium bodied red wine perfect for springtime entertaining. Flavours of raspberry, black cherry, and pepper dominant the palate.

FOOD PAIRINGS:Expertly matched with grilled lamb with portabella mushrooms.

WHY IT’S PERFECT FOR SPRING 2016:A perfect springtime barbeque companion. A red wine that’s versatile and able to pair with many different grilled meats and veggies.

Recipe from Wine Country:PROSCIUTTO WRAPPED SALMON PARCELS PAIRED WITH REIF ESTATE RIESLING

METHOD Sprinkle salmon with rosemary leaves and ground pepper. Tuck belly flap of salmon underand cover with the prosciutto slices. Sauté top and bottom of salmon parcels in olive oil in a non‐stickpan until beginning to brown and crisp slightly. Place pan in 325 degree oven for 10 minutes or until justcooked but still slightly pink in the center. To make the sauce, sauté shallots in olive oil until soft and addchopped tomatoes. Pour in the wine and reduce by half, now pour in stock and reduce by half again.Take off of heat push sauce through sieve and reheat. To finish whisk in the butter to emulsify. Salt andpepper to taste. Serves 4.

REIF ESTATE WINERYReif Estate Winery has been growing Riesling in the Niagara River sub-appellation since 1983. The easterly facing gentle slopes and long growing season moderated by the Niagara River are in perfect concert with the bedrock of the Queenston Formation, a geological formation shaped over 450 million years ago, creating ideal grape growing conditions for this versatile grape. Three clones of Riesling, named Geisenheim, Weis Clone 21B and Alsatian Clone 49, were specially selected by Klaus W. Reif and planted on the farm. Clone Geisenheim was chosen for the body and structure it provides to winemakers, while the others offer fruitiness, citrus and floral notes to the resulting wine. The variety is also a highly terroir expressive grape and as a result, our estate grown Rieslings are truly reflective of our vineyards in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

In the quaint Village of Streetsville is where you’ll find one of the city’s best Italian restaurants, Mondello Ristorante. In the top 10 restaurants in Mississauga via Trip Advisor out of over 1,300 options, it’s clear that they’re doing something consistently right. We sat down with Co-Owner and General Manager Jessica Spiteri to learn more about this beautiful restaurant that’s been around since May of 2008 and has no signs of slowing down.

SIGNATURE FOOD & DRINK ITEMSIt’s hard to pick your favourite child, so to speak. Mondello is known for their impeccable pastas, savoury seafood along with their prodigious pizzas. With all menu items being authentic and creative, you simply can’t pick only one. My vote? The Wild Cheese Tortellini, hands down, forks up. Drink wise, Jessica says the “Latin Fever” is always a popular item, consisting of blue curacao, Malibu rum, lemon juice, grapefruit juice and pineapple juice.

CHEF’S BIOClassically trained and creative, chef Nico delights the senses when he expresses himself through the art of cooking.

NAME ORIGINThey’re named after a small, seaside resort in Southern Italy that Jessica was inspired by.

The short version? Every day is special. Event wise, Jessica has been holding quarterly wine tastings that have been well received.
