Worldwide, the broadcasting industry is being turned on its head by the Internet. It’s no different locally, where technological advances — online and other-wise — are taking place at an unprecedented pace and leaving a wave of uncertainty in their wake. But it’s all about opportunity, not catastrophe.

“For advertisers there’s the ability to better target audiences online where they are better defined. Fi-nancial people have a better idea of how their bud-gets are being used. For consumers there’s the abil-ity to watch or listen to programming whenever and wherever they want — they decide, guided in some form by broadcasters. Nothing illustrates this more effectively than the rise of YouTube, now owned by Google.

Take the stats: YouTube receives approximately 2 billion views a day — more than double the prime-time audience of the three major American TV networks combined. Last year more than 13 million hours of video were uploaded to the site, and 35 hours of video are uploaded every minute. Put another way, more video is uploaded to YouTube in 60 days than the three major American networks have created in 60 years.

a great season of programming and all other sorts of shenanigans. The last article I wrote was for the winter edition of MMZ. That was a very good freaking article. We have increased in episodes and Media Mashup has almost existed for a year. A YEAR?! 365 Days! 52 Weeks! That is a long ass time. We at Media Mashup are very grateful to have fans like yourselves.

Alex “The Greatest Radio Show Host Ever Sold” Hausner got into Hofstra University and soon will get into Boston University, George Washington University, Northwestern University and Clown College. Yeah, I said it, clown college. It is a very prestigious school. Soon, I will show whichever college I choose that I am indeed the GREATEST RADIO SHOW HOST EVER SOLD. They will be amazed, I know it already.

ON THE MUSIC FRONNNTTTT. Justin “Sexy Back” Timberlake had just released his new album, The 20/20 Experience and it is terrific. He brings his old NSYNC-ness back to his voice. Kidding, NSYNC is still irrelevant. Anyways, Timberlake is back and we all love him for it. Little Wayne or “Lil Wayne” almost died recent-ly. The dude is still taking lots of drugs. He reminds me of Charlie Sheen, just Wayne doesn’t have Tiger Blood like Sheen has. Classic Shenanigans there, amir-ite?!?!?!?!?!

ITS MOVIE TIME! BEN AFFLECK DID NOT WIN AN OSCAR FOR BEST DIRECTOR. Thats a load of bullshit, but he did win for best film, which was awesome. Jennifer Lawerence is the funniest female in the whole entire world, just ask Meryl Streep. He ended up winning Best Actress, which was a no brainer. After the awards, she was asked stupid questions by the press. What else is new. OH! IRONMAN THREE IS COMING AGAIN! YEAH TONY STARK AND THE SHIELD AND RON BURGANDY!

In the early part of the twentieth century, we saw a decline in the Eastern bluebird when the more aggressive European starlings and house sparrows were intro-duced to the USA. The 1960’s started an effort to recover the population of this species of bird and people began putting up nesting boxes designed to keep the larger European starlings out.

So, let’s look at this bird a little closer:

The male Eastern bluebird is royal blue on the back and head with a reddish-brown on its breast. While the female is more grey on the head and back with blue tinges on the wings and tail feathers and more subdued red-dish-brown feathers on its breast.

Bluebirds sleep in nest cavities and on sheltered branches of trees and shrubs.

When they are ready to mate,

the male will entice the female to a nesting spot by carrying mate-rial in and out of the proposed nest, perching and fluttering his wings. Once the female accepts his invitation, she will create her actual nest which will be con-structed loosely of grasses and pine needles and lining it with fine grasses.

Here are some suggestions:Have native plantings that will provide fall and winter food. This would include flowering dog-wood, American holly, mulberry, juniper, wild grape, blueberry, viburnum and Virginia creeper to name a few. That “weed” you may have in your yard – poke-weed – is also a food source for this bird.

You can also put up bluebird houses. If you decide to put up multiple houses, it is sug-gested that they are 100 yards apart allowing the bluebirds to establish a territory; about 3-6

feet from the ground facing open areas and away from pre-vailing winds. Having a tree or other suitable perch 40-100 feet away from the house, helps young on their first journeys out of the nest. Houses should be specific for bluebirds. You can check the internet (or books) on bluebird houses, or one of the websites below for more specific information on this bird and their abodes. Install a predator guide below the box to prevent preda-tors from climbing up and a 5” roof overhang to prevent attacks from above. It is also recommended to remove any house sparrow nests that may take up residence. Per-sonally, I let anyone take up resi-dence in my bird houses – which included a flying squirrel one time (you can read my previous blog below “Anyone Home???” on that incident).

If you decide to supplement their diet, their preferred food is meal-worms, which can be purchased at many stores, including Wild Birds Unlimited and Lowes. They may occasionally eat shelled sunflower, safflower and peanut chips, but they do not usually eat birdseed. Suet may be a life-saver for them in the cold winter months when their natural diet of berries and insects are scarce, but you may have to coax them to the suet. You can do this by crumbling the suet into bite sized

pieces and putting it on a platform feeder with mealworms and/or berries that they like. Make sure your suet is tasty by having items like peanut chips, berries and sun-flower hearts incorporated it in.

Avoid using pesticides on plants in your yard. This is something that is important to help all wildlife and life in general!

Spotlight on Local FarmingA Well Worth the Wait at Cropsey Community Farm

As most farmers will tell you, the basics of grow-ing food are good soil, plenty of sunlight and an ample supply of water. With support from the county and approval from the county department of health, drilling for the irrigation well at Cropsey Community Farm fi-nally began last week, an exciting turning point since plans for the well began in early 2011. “The well is the lifeblood of the farm,” said Mike Clark, an area landscape designer and contractor who has been volunteering his time, equipment and experience to Rockland Farm Alliance on several large projects at the farm over the last few seasons. “Without the water in drought conditions, we could lose the whole crop. It is also essential for expansion into the south field,” Mike continued. Even without drought conditions, it is important to have a way to manage water from a clean, reliable source free of potential contaminants in run-off from Rockland roads and lawns, particularly considering the weather patterns of the last few seasons. “Now when rain comes, it comes heavy. Not soft like it used to,” said Mike. Read more about Mike Clark below. The process to establish a new well requires a plan that abides by strict regulations from the Health Department, a landscape architect, an electri-cian, a well driller, a plumber, a carpenter and sufficient funding.


“The strict regulations are another reminder that we, as individuals, need to work in a more environmentally conscious way,” said John Mc-Dowell, RFA co-founder and board president. “We began this process several years ago and now that we have approval, we are very blessed to have several angels from the community as part of this process.” For the farm team, the well means they can sleep easier at night, know-ing that one of the essential elements for growing produce is within reach of the field. Earth Day 2013: The Face of Climate Change

Climate change has many faces.

A man in the Maldives worried about relocating his family as sea levels rise, a farmer in Kansas struggling to make ends meet as prolonged drought rav-ages the crops, a fisherman on the Niger River whose nets often come up empty, a child in New Jersey who lost her home to a super-storm, a woman in Bangla-desh who can’t get fresh water due to more frequent flooding and cyclones…

And they’re not only human faces.They’re the polar bear in the melting arctic, the tiger in India’s threatened mangrove forests, the right whale in plankton-poor parts of the warming North Atlantic, the orangutan in Indonesian forests segmented by more frequent bushfires and droughts… These faces of climate change are multi-plying every day.

For many, climate change can often seem remote and hazy – a vague and complex problem far off in the distance

that our grandchildren may have to solve. But that’s only because they’re still fortunate enough to be insulated from its mounting consequences. Climate change has very real effects on people, animals, and the ecosystems and natural resources on which we all depend. Left unchecked, they’ll spread like wildfire.

Luckily, other faces of climate change are also multiplying every day.

their concerns for the planet, and take action to protect it. We’ll harness that power to show the world The Face of Climate Change. And we’ll call on our leaders to act boldly together, as we have, in this pivotal year.

Between now and Earth Day, we’ll collect and display images of people, animals, and places directly affected or threatened by climate change – as well as images of people stepping up to do something about it. We’ll tell the world their stories. But we need your help. We need you to be climate reporters. So, send us your pictures and stories that show The Face of Climate Change.

On and around Earth Day, an interactive digital display of all the images will be shown at thousands of events around the world, including next to federal government buildings in countries that produce the most carbon pollution. The display will also be made available online to anyone who wants to view or show it.

Together, we’ll highlight the solutions and showcase the collective power of individ-uals taking action across the world. In do-ing so, we hope to inspire our leaders to act and inspire ourselves to redouble our efforts in the fight against climate change.
