Thank you to all our students, parents, staff and the entire Millennium community. Thank you to our PTSA and SAC for their generous support to our student recognition program.

As we pass the midpoint of the school year, we begin our preparation for next year. Most eighth grade students have received registration materials from the high schools. Recently, our existing sixth and seventh grade students received their MMS registration materials. Please review these materials with your child and make a choice that will support and stretch their skills. Meetings and deadlines have been established for returning registration forms and are listed inside the materials. All materials must be submitted by the deadline—honoring these dates will give your child the best chance to get their choice of courses.

Students who demonstrate proficiency with the FSA assessment should strongly consider taking advanced classes to provide them with the necessary challenge which prepares them for high school. Those students that achieve the higher scores will be placed in advanced level classes. For those students who struggle with the assessment will be provided intensive support.

FSA assessments are right around the corner. Our progress monitoring data reflects positive growth this year! All students will take FSA Writing exams in the beginning of March. FSA English Language Arts (ELA), Math and Science will begin in April.

We ask parents and guardians to assist by continually encouraging your child to give their very best on these exams. Further, please try to avoid scheduling appointments and trips on FSA testing days. We know that many outside leagues and

Positive Behavior Support (PBS) CornerMillennium Middle School is a Positive Behavior Support (PBS) school. Our focus with this program is to teach school-wide expectations using a positive approach. These are the behaviors that help us to create a welcoming school environment where all students have the opportunity to learn. At Millennium, we teach students to have PRIDE in Millennium.

By teaching and re-teaching these expectations, our faculty and staff are focusing on helping each student become part of our Millennium community. Students meeting these expectations can be rewarded with Falcon Bucks. These are given out by faculty and staff on campus to students who we “catch” exhibiting PRIDE in Millennium. The Falcon Bucks can be turned in to the grade-level buckets in the cafeteria and are randomly drawn each week to recognize students’ PRIDE in Millennium. Quarterly, students are recognized for no referrals as well as for academic achievement. Our desire is to help students acquire the behaviors they will need in the future to be active, successful members of their school, community, and workplace. With the new year, it is a great time for a fresh start and we ask that parents encourage their students to come to school each day and show their Millennium PRIDE.

Our PRIDE Chant is:I will…Prepare for TodayRespect My SchoolInteract Positively Do My BestEncourage Excellence!

For the second nine weeks many students were honored for their exemplary efforts. We recognized students that did not receive a referral during this quarter grading period, students that received a 3.5 GPA or above, and students with straight As! • No referrals - 1,415 students• 3.5 GPA – 249 students• 3.75 GPA – 86 students• 4.0 GPA – 91 students

We are currently working on implementing a system of rewards and acknowledgments. If you, or anyone you know owns a business or can donate student rewards (i.e. gift cards, coupons, teenage-type gadgets and gizmos, fun school supplies, etc.) please contact Evan Sokolowsky ([email protected]) or James Oliver ([email protected]).

BullyingAt Millennium Middle School, we strive to empower our students and prevent this type of behavior. We provide resources to students and parents like our Upstanders Club, student presentations on bullying and harassment, field trips to the Holocaust Center, student workshops to teach students how to deal with bullying, homeroom lessons on character education, and presentations to students about bullying.

This year, students at Millennium will be participating in Black Out Bullying Week January 18th-22nd. During this week students at Millennium will be asked to participate in a poster contest, essay contest, and public service announcement competition. Winners will be chosen from Millennium and will move on to county level judging at the educational support center.

Does your child complain of being teased at school? “Teasing” is not a normal part of a middle school student’s quest to maintain social status and build new relationships. If the “teasing” becomes repetitive in nature, hurts your child academically, physically or emotionally, or interferes with their normal behavior – the “teasing” has escalated to bullying and must be stopped.

Students can report bullying or harassment anonymously, by filling out a report in the Deans office (Glover Hall or building 5), report it to a teacher or guidance counselor, call the Speak-Out-Hotline, or by having a parent fill out a Parent Report Form in the office or from the school website.

For more information about reporting bullying, please contact the Dean Rish at 407-320-6576 or via email at [email protected] .

ATTENTION 6TH GRADE PARENTSAn additional immunization is required by the Department of Health and the Department of Education for all students entering the 7th grade next school year.

A Tdap booster (adult strength tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) is required before your child can begin the school year 2015-16 unless a booster dose has been received within the past five years and the school has documentation of the student receiving the earlier booster dose.

Formal documentation is mandated. You must present a completed Florida Certificate of Immunization form DH 680, with an updated Part A signed by a healthcare provider or designee, for your child to receive a schedule or enter school on the first day of the school year.

Please submit the proper proof of immunization to your child’s school as soon as possible.

If you are unsure if you have turned your child’s updated immunization in to the school, you can check the shots that the school has on record by logging into skyward and looking in the health tab.

Your child’s healthcare provider or the Seminole County Health Department can provide the Tdap booster. The Health Department is located at the following addresses:

ArtStudents in Ms. Lytle’s 2D-1 Visual Art class ended the semester with a fantastic expression of creativity! On their final project they learned about oil pastels and techniques (flat color, blending, composition, and color layering) and created amazing art inspired by nature. Throughout the semester they gained a plethora of knowledge. They learned about the Elements of Art (Line, Shape, Form, Texture, Color, Value, and Space), the Principles of Design (Emphasis, Balance, Rhythm, Variety, and Unity) along with a variety of art, artists, art movements, and techniques. They applied that knowledge (using a variety of materials) to create wonderful works of art. I encourage all students to continue expressing their creativity because…

Physical EducationThe Physical Education Department participated in the Hoops for Heart program in November. We are pleased to report that Millennium made the highest donation to the American Heart Association in the 12 years we have been participating in the event with a donation of $1000.00. Thanks to all that participated in the event and the many students that donated to help save a life!! Way to go Millennium!!

PE uniforms are being sold for 2nd semester students and will be available for purchase during your student’s class time. If a student loses or just want an extra uniform, they can bring their money in during class and speak with any of the PE teachers to purchase a new one. CASH only is accepted. The cost is $15.00 for the set, $10.00 for a pair of shorts and $8.00 for a T-shirt if purchased separately.

We also recommend that students bring a combination lock to secure their valuables during class time. A locker will be assigned to them for the semester only after they bring a lock to class.

ReadingReading continues to be a focus in middle school as a way to learn content in all classes. When children are in elementary school, they learn to read, but when they transition to middle school, they read to learn. As students continue to move from sixth grade forward content becomes more challenging, so it is important for teachers and parents to stress that students practice reading during school and at home. Just as athletes practice to achieve great things on the field, track or court, so MUST students practice reading to prepare themselves for the years ahead.

Our Read to Lead Club has already started to meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00-5:30. This club provides students the opportunity read some good books and have book talks with peers as they enjoy the learning process. If your student is interested in joining the Read To Lead Club, see Mrs. Jennifer Smith in the Media Center to pick up a permission letter and an invitation. Then, they will be on track to be in our county competition in the spring.

MMS’s goal is to produce literate students who are excited to learn! We hope you join us in this effort by ensuring that each of the students have an interesting book to read, and that they read at home (at least 20 minutes) every day. The Media Center offers wonderful reading materials to keep all students interested. Keep reading, Falcons!!

Language ArtsLanguage Arts is off and running in the new semester! In 6th grade, the focus is on determining central ideas, inferencing, and analyzing interactions in Greek mythology. Students are reading classic works such as the “The Quest of Perseus and Medusa” and “The Prince and the Pauper” to practice these strategies. In 7th grade, students are reading about the Triangle Fire of 1911 as a way to develop their skills for determining central idea, analyzing interactions within a text, and comparing conflicting evidence between texts. In 8th grade, Gary Soto’s “One Last Time” is serving as the introductory text to prepare students for a unit on teens entering the workforce. In the unit, students will decipher the story’s central idea and analyze the key word choice. Across the board we will be ramping up the writing instruction focus as we prepare for the final progress monitoring essay (mid-January) and the Writing FSA (end of February). Students are practicing how to analyze a text closely for information while confronting a challenging issue with a critical eye. They are strengthening their writing techniques with plenty of opportunities for writing intriguing introductions, convincing arguments using textual evidence and personal elaboration, and satisfying conclusions. Thank you for all you do to support your child’s education and learning endeavors!

Social Studies6th Grade – In World History, students are focusing on Greece and Rome this nine weeks. This month they are beginning to investigate Ancient Greece and examine how different factors encouraged the growth of the Ancient Greek civilization. Specifically, students will explain how major physical characteristics influenced settlement, interaction, and the economy of Ancient Greece. Then they will examine important achievements and contributions of Ancient Greece and illustrate how democratic concepts developed. Students will also have the opportunity to investigate how the Persian and Peloponnesian Wars led to the growth and decline of Ancient Greek Civilization.

7th Grade – This quarter started with an examination of the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation and how those weaknesses impacted the development of the Constitution. Then students will investigate the Bill of Rights and other amendments to the Constitution, examining them in relation to the viewpoints of the Federalists and Anti-Federalists. This nine weeks concludes with a study of the American Legal System and a closer look at how Florida’s government is structured in comparison to the national government.

8th Grade – U.S. History students are beginning the quarter with a study of the early years of our nation, focusing on the foreign and domestic issues surrounding the first four presidents. Then, students are moving west, taking a look at Jacksonian Democracy and Westward Expansion. Finally, the nine weeks wraps up with an investigation into the divergent development of the North and South in preparation for our study of the causes of the Civil War in the final quarter of the school year.

Parents - Please check Skyward on a regular basis. You can see your child’s grades and missing assignments as soon as they are posted.

January 2016 7Department NewsScienceWhat do you get when you cross the weather, a frog, and the periodic table of elements?...just another amazing week with our Falcon Science Program! Several of our 6th grade science students are getting ready for an overnight space adventure at Kennedy Space Center. The students will participate in many exciting activities including an Astronaut Encounter, a shuttle launch experience, and an “Amazing Space Challenge.” Back in the classroom, our 6th graders are moving air masses and tracking pressure disturbances as they immerse into the work of weather and meteorology.

Venture a little further down the halls and you’ll find our 7th graders knee deep in anatomy and physiology. They are breaking down each body system in depth to better understand how these organ systems build healthy humans. Our future medical professionals are ready to glove-up for their biological explorations of bullfrogs and cow eyes. A special highlight will be hands-only CPR training to get our students ready to respond in case of an emergency.

A few classrooms over, our Falcon 8th graders are culminating their study of the physical and chemical properties of matter with one of the greatest ideas in science, the periodic table of elements. From the density of matter to the luminosity of stars, these elements make up the cosmos and the periodic table is the cornerstone to our understanding the universe. Then, we shall break out the beakers and test tubes for our entrance into the world of chemistry where atoms swirl and electrons mingle to unmask new and exciting discoveries.

We have an upcoming opportunity for our 7th and 8th graders to take an overnight field trip to the University of South Florida for their annual Engineering Expo. They will get their hands moving and minds active as they engage in a variety of science, technology, and engineering activities. The trip will take place February 19-20 and more information will be sent home through the students’ science teacher. Our Millennium Science Department would like to congratulate the winners of our school science fair held on Wednesday, January 13th at 3:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. These research scholars will represent MMS at the 2016 Seminole County Regional Science, Math and Engineering Fair held at the Seminole Town Center Mall on February 13th. Even at such an astounding collection of brilliance and innovation, our Falcons will beam bright!

MathMath Clubs are in full swing and preparing for the Seminole County Math Festival on April 30th. All math teachers have moved from entering in points into Skyward for grades to entering in percentages. You will now see percentages for your student’s grades for the remainder of semester two. The weights of these percents will vary by math teacher.

Sixth grade students continue to work with equations. They need to be able to determine the value of the variable as well as write an equation from a real-world word problem. They need to be able to apply order of operations to any expression and determine which expressions are equal. These skill will be included as they move into inequalities. The students will need to be able to graph multiple solutions that range from whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Our sixth graders will develop table and graph reading, and interpretation skills.

Advanced sixth graders will continue with adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing rational numbers. This includes students being able to use positive and negative decimals and fractions to complete these operations. Next they will move into finding the area of two dimensional composite figures as well as finding volume and surface area of three dimensional figures.

GEM students have begun exploring lines, angles, and polygons with a focus on triangle construction. The next unit of study during this quarter is statistics and probability. Students were assigned a Unit #8 Bridge assignment the week of January 11th. This is an independent study that will be conducted at home and assessed through eCampus quizzes.

Seventh grade students have moved into geometry. Our students are using their prior knowledge of triangle to draw and classify. They are learning how to develop and apply formulas to perimeter and area of composite figure including circles. Next our students will move into three-dimensional figures, finding the volume for prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones and spheres. Our quarter will end with probability. These standards includes the students’ knowledge of experimental and theoretical probability as well as independent and dependent events. The students will create a random population and compare with others to produce scatter plots or tables.

Eighth grade Pre-algebra has moved from functions to system of equations. Their job is to find a solution that will fit for several equations. Students will comprehend several strategies including graphing and elimination of variable. The students will move into transformation which is the manipulation of a polygon. The standards will have our students determining similarity of the polygons through algebraic strategies. Towards the end of the quarter, Pythagorean Theorem will be used with triangles to calculate missing lengths. The students will begin volume which will be completed in the fourth quarter.

Algebra 1 is working on the statistics and data unit. The students will use tables, plot graphs, histograms and frequency tables to interpret, summarize and represent data. The next standard deals with polynomials. The students will build strategies to add, subtract, and multiply polynomials. They will also need to factor the polynomial in order to determine possible solutions. The last concept for Algebra 1 is quadratic functions. As well as being able to solve, our math students will determine the meaning of the quadratic and how to stretch or shrink the function. Towards the end of the quarter, students will graph the multiple solutions of quadratic functions.

Student Check out PolicyPhoto ID must be presented every time a student is checked out from school. Students can only be checked out by a parent or emergency contact. We do not accept phone calls in advance and will not call students out of class until the parent has arrived. There will be no student check out after 3:15 on all days except Wednesday after 2:15.

TransportationChange of TransportationIf a students need to change his transportation for a specific day, parents needs to send a note to the school and it needs to be signed by Dean Rish. Notes for transportation changes (ex. normally a bus rider and for a specific day student will be a car rider) need to be turned in early in the day not at the end of the day. Parents may not request students ride a different bus home or get off at a different stop other than the students assigned stop.

Address ChangesWhen a household moves to another location it is very important that the school is notified about the change of address. This is very important for information sent to parents from the school, skyward contact information, and transportation changes that may need to occur. When a family moves and the student takes the bus to and from school it is important to contact the school and get a new bus for your new address. Please make sure you come to the school and submit the proper documentation for an address change so transportation changes can be made. The documents that are needed for an address change are listed below. If you have any questions about bus changes and an address change please contact Dean Rish at 407-320-6576 or via email at [email protected].

Documentation for address changes:

• Copy of bill or lease for new address• Any bill that has the new address on it• Copy of new drivers licenses (with new address) or• Copy of Voter Registration Card (with new address)
