The goal of this project was to design a font which embodied all aspects of a local neighborhood. A font book was then produced to exhibit the font and all its uses.

Capitol

Several hours were spent exploring the neighborhood to get a clear idea of what made this location unique and to become fluent in the local vernacular. Photos were geocoded and mapped to aid in discovering patterns.

The Researchresearch

A landscape which fed off the very capitalism it condemned. Everything that existed there had one purpose, to generate income. Most operations were independent which was evident by their humanistic imperfections and handmade quality. This place was governed by a dystopian capitalism.

Capital was inspired by the dollar bill. Letters were printed, crumpled, scanned, traced and then transformed into a working font using Glyphs software.

Extensive exploration via sketches located the

best way of portraying the neighborhood in Berkeley, California.

This book was designed for Buckminster Fuller’s Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth. All design choices reflected the content as well as the target reader.

As Buckminster’s writings were very practical and technical, the design follows the principles of constructivism. Heavy use of geometric shapes and ample white space were essential.


Images used were monochromatic and used sparingly to retain a vintage look as if from an outdated science book.

The layout of the book reflected

the aesthetics of modernist graphic design using solid shapes and plenty

of white space to construct an

environment for the text to live.

The dymaxion map was created by Buckminster himself, and paying homage to this design was a key part the books layout.

Comprehensive Propensities

I am enthusiastic over humanity’s extraor-dinary and sometimes very timely ingenu-ities. If you are in a shipwreck and all the boats are gone, a piano top buoyant enough to keep you afloat that comes along makes a fortuitous life preserver. But this is not to say that the best way to design a life pre-server is in the form of a piano top. I think that we are clinging to a great many piano tops in accepting yesterday’s fortuitous con-trivings as constituting the only means for solving a given problem. Our brains deal exclusively with special-case experiences. Only our minds are able to discover the generalized principles operating without exception in each and every special- experience case which if detected and mastered will give knowledgeable advantage in all instances.

Because our spontaneous initiative has been frustrated, too often inadvertently, in earliest childhood we do not tend, customarily, to dare to think competently regarding our potentials. We find it socially easier to go on with our narrow, shortsighted specializa-tion’s and leave it to others — primarily to the politicians — to find some way of resolving our common dilemmas. Countering that spontaneous grownup trend to narrowness I will do my, hopefully “childish,” best to confront as many of our problems as possible by employing the longest-distance thinking of which I am capable — though that may not take us very far into the future.

Having been trained at the U.S. Naval Academy and practically experienced in the powerfully effective forecasting arts of celestial navigation, pilotage, ballistics, and logistics, and in the long-range, anticipatory, design science governing yesterday’s naval mastery of the world from which our present day’s general systems theory has been derived, I recall that in 1927 I set about deliberately exploring to see how far ahead we could make competent forecasts regarding the direction in which all humanity is trending and to see how effec-tively we could interpret the physical details of what comprehensive evolution might be portending as disclosed by the available data. I came to the conclusion that it is possible to make a fairly reasonable forecast of about twenty-five years. That seems to be about one in-dustrial “tooling” generation. On the average, all inventions seem to get melted up about every twenty-five years, after which the metals come back into recirculation in new and usually more effective uses. At any rate, in 1927 I evolved a forecast. Most of my 1927’s prognos-ticating went only to 1952 — that is, for a quarter-century, but some of it went on for a half-century, to 1977.

To maintain an open minded design process, emphasis was placed on working off the computer. Craft and multiple mediums were essential during this stage.

Music Foldout 23

CollageThis was a technique which allowed my design to contain several layers and meanings which all contributed to an overall theme and message.

The Final Product

The outside of the foldout was composed of a simple and rough linen texture with the title loosely spelled out using string to represent a peaceful unraveling.

A suit was constructed out of textures and

images which referenced different verses in the song. To represent failed ambition

and being hollow inside I added a cutout of a tie.

This bar/restaurant has been around since 1904 and was in need a brand face lift. Focus was placed on the logo but also the overall identity, language, and other brand assets.

Trends in logos for similar services were extensively explored. The bar was visited several times to gain inspiration from it’s unique qualities and customers.

Amiri Baraka was a multifaceted artist, producing political and controversial plays, poems, books, and speeches.

Much of Amiri’s work was very aggressive toward existing power structures which he condemned as being highly oppressive.

Every aspect of the box set was designed to reflect the life and works of Amiri. A repeating theme was eviscerated white space exposing the controversial ideas and works of Amiri.

Lupa Trattoria is a local Italian restaurant in S.F. that has a lot of charm, but was in need of an updated web presence. Many new customers use the web to search for new dining locations, and therefore having a strong website is very important.

Lupa was visited several times to get a better idea of the restaurant and it’s patrons. An inspiration image map was created to find a style that was modern while not a complete departure from the existing one.

The ChefStefano Coppola began his restaurant career as a chef and partner in a family restaurant in Nemi, a small town outside of Rome. The focus was on traditional Roman cuisine - fresh ingredients spiced just enough to bring out the natural flavours of the food. In the late 1990's he came to San Fran-cisco where he worked as a chef in several successful Italian restaurants including Ristorante Ideale and Pasta. He opened his first restaurant in 1999, and then in 2002, he opened Lupa Trattoria as a casual restaurant specializing in Roman tratto-ria are of the highest quality at a moderate price.

The Legend of LupaThe legend says that the young Rea Silvia, (daughter of the king of Albalonga, Numitore, nephew of the cruel Amulio, whom usurped the throne that was due to his brother) was a priestess of the goddess Vesta, protector of the domestic �replace; because this was her function she could not marry nor have sons. But she fell in love with the God Mars and from that love two sons were born. When uncle Amulio found out about it, he con�ned the niece to a cellar and he ordered his servant to kill the two twins. But the man had pity and, instead of killing them, he abandoned them on the Tiber shores.

The focus of this project was on research methodology and design process. The goal was to redesign the wayfinding system in a parking garage to reduce amount of parking citations being administered.

The final solution focused primarily on simplicity. Research showed that even

mildly complex or stylized designs were ineffective at communicating to students.

This final version makes use of simple color coding to alert drivers of the dif-

ferent environments within the structure. The color system continues throughout

the structure and is accompanied by supplementary linguistic information.

Visual information is delivered on two basic levels, linguistically and by color

coding, each supported by research as highly effective communication methods.
