Cooling ProductsGeneral Information
The Need for Environment ControlWith wide spread use of micro-electronics in today’s control systems, temperature management takes on a new priority inorder to ensure steady and reliable performance. The maintenance of a correct operating temperature may combine bothcooling and or heating inside an enclosure which can protect against costly down time and system failures.
The Purpose of CoolingElectrical/electronic control systems together generate heat as a by-product of their operation. When equipment is located inareas where clean dry air for ventilation is either not available or high external temperatures exist, active methods such as airconditioning must be applied.
The Purpose of HeatingHeaters protect electronic and electrical components from temperature problems that are below tolerances. Obviously, thereare circumstances when extremely low ambient (outside cabinet) temperatures would require a heater, but there are also lessapparent times when a heater should be considered. For example, a system may run all day having its components generateheat, but once the system shuts down for the night, the quick drop in temperature could cause condensation and possiblycorrosion - a heater could maintain a safe, constant temperature.
Combined Cooling and HeatingSome components today require both cooling and heating in the same enclosure. When designing your system, be aware ofthe need to maintain a relatively constant temperature inside the enclosure as ambient temperatures swing from cool to veryhot.
Information Needed for Environment Control SelectionThe following information should be on hand to properly size cooling products:(1) Heat to be dissipated (Watts).(2) Maximum temperature expected outside enclosure (°F) or (°C).(3) Maximum allowable internal enclosure temperature (°F) or (°C).(4) Surface area of enclosure (ft2) or (m2).
The following information should be on hand to properly size heating products:(1) Heat being generated by electrical/electronic components (in Watts)(2) Minimum temperature expected outside enclosure (°F) or (°C).(3) Minimum allowable internal enclosure temperature (°F) or (°C).(4) Surface area of enclosure (ft2) or (m2).

Side Mounting
Q MountQ Mount allows installation of the airconditioner to be performed by asingle person, saving valuable time and money. Thread-in-Studs hold the unit in place while it is fastened to the enclosure.This also allows for the air conditioner to be easily removedfor safe transportation separate from control equipment.
Lifting top mount units intoplace can be safelyaccommodated with optionallifting lugs which attach to theframe assembly.
Top Mounting
ServiceabilityOne Template Mounting
One singlet e m p l a t eaccommodatescooling rangesfrom 6,000 BTU/H to 12,000
BTU/H. This allowssize upgrades without
making modifications to theexisting cutouts. The additional
height of these units, combined with theirintegrated air ducting ensures maximum air circulation withinthe enclosure, reducing the chance of heat pockets. Smallcapacity units, 1,200 BTU/H and 2,000 BTU/H, areretrofitable to leading North American cutouts allowing easyupgrading or replacement.
The optional recessedmounting frame will reducethe external enclosuredimensions.
Improved serviceabilitybegins with the unique PFfilter grill. This grill providessuperior protection of the
filter mat compared to units with a metal mat and is easilyremoved for cleaning. Quarter turn screws allow the externalcover of the air conditioner to be completely removed forease of inspection and serviceability.

Cooling ProductsSizing an Air Conditioner
Sizing an Air ConditionerThe proper selection of an air conditioner is determined by the following steps:
Step 1) Internal heat load quoted as Watts that must be dissipated.Step 2) The exposed surface area of the enclosure.Step 3) Temperature differential required between maximum inside temperature and maximum outside ambient.Step 4) Final calculation of the above.
1 m2 = 10.76 ft2
Calculate the exposed surface area of theenclosure:
1 Watt = 3.413 BTU/H
Determine the internal heat load (in Watts)that must be dissipated.
Step TwoStep One
Step Four(Watts x 3.413) + [1.25 x Area ft2 x DT (°F)] = BTU/H
Step Three
1°C or 1°K∆∆∆∆∆ T=1.8°F∆∆∆∆∆ T
Determine the temperature differential bysubtracting the maximum allowable tem-perature inside the enclosure (Ti) from themaximum ambient temperature outside theenclosure (To).
To-Ti = DT

Blowers and FansGeneral Selection Considerations
General SpecificationsAll Hammond blowers and filter fans are engineered for performance and built for reliability. This versatile line includes ablower, fan tray and filter fans.Blowers and fans use forced convection cooling, which means ambient air flows through a filter into the enclosure to coolheated components. Both blowers and fans are sized in CFM (cubic feet per minute).It is recommended that an exhaust filter be used in combination with the blower or filter fan to act both as an exhaust point forthe hot internal air plus aid in the pressurization of the enclosure, reducing the chance of unfiltered air entering theenclosure. Whenever possible, the blower or filter fan should be located in the bottom third of the enclosure and the filteredexhaust grill placed as high as possible on the opposing side. Performance levels can be further increased by adding asecond exhaust filter.
Sizing Blowers and FansTo determine the CFM (cubic feet per minute) required in any standard situation, use the following calculation,(non-standard situations would consist of high air density - significantly more than 0.075 lbs per cubic foot.)
CFM =
CFM x (0.075)
Non-standard Air Density (lbs per cubic foot)
Note - The calculation above is exact, but adding an additional 25% to the CFM level is a standard safety factor.
If the air density is high (significantly more than 0.075 lbs per cubic foot), use the number calculated above in the followingformula:
Power to be dissipated (Watts) x 3.17
Maximum Allowable Internal Temperature (°F) - Maximum Ambient Temperature (°F)
Note: Ambient Temperature must be lower than maximum internal temperature for fan/blower to be effective.

Heating ProductsGeneral Information and Sizing
General InformationHeating products protect electronic and electrical components from temperature problems that are below acceptabletolerances. There are obvious circumstances when extremely low ambient (outside cabinet) temperatures would require aheater, but there are also less apparent times that a heater should be considered. For example, a system may run all dayhaving its components generate heat, but once the system shuts down for the night, the quick drop in temperature couldcause condensation and possibly corrosion - a heater could maintain a safe, constant temperature.
Combined Cooling and HeatingSome components today are sensitive enough that both cooling and heating could be required in the same enclosure. Whendesigning your system, be aware of the need to maintain a relatively constant temperature inside the enclosure as ambienttemperatures swing from cool to very hot. Hammond thermostats (one for heaters and one for cooling products) can controlboth systems automatically.
Heater Sizing Information
PH = Total power required for this application (W)PV = Existing power from components (W)DT = Temperature differential (Kelvin) ambient to
cabinet interior (1°Kelvin = 1°C = 1.8°F)A = Free-standing cabinet surface area (ft2)k = Heat transmission coefficient (W/ft2 K) convection
in quiet air:Painted steel approx. 0.51 W/ft2 KAluminum approx. 1.115 W/ft2 KPlastic approx. 0.325 W/ft2
Stainless Steel approx. .344 W/ft2 K
FormulaPH = (DT x k x A) - PV
If enclosure located outside, use x2 (DT x k x A)
Sample with solution:DT = 5Kk = Painted steel = 0.51 W/ft2
A = 50 ft2
PV = 50 WPH = (5 x 0.51 x 50) - 50
= 127.5 - 50= 77.5 W
