Midlothian High School Bands an 18-time VA Honor Band
Gordon S. Rawls, Director of Bands (804) 378-2440 401 Charter Colony Parkway [email protected] Midlothian, VA 23114
Good evening,
Thank you for joining us to celebrate our tenth annual Midlothian High School Showcase of Bands. We started
this competition ten years ago because at the time it was hard to find a local competition on the first Saturday in
October. We HOPED it would turn into something special, and we’re proud to be able to look back and see that
it has. I believe in the importance of music education. I believe in the impact that our art form in all its
iterations can have on the students we teach as well as those fortunate enough to be in the audience when we
perform. I’m PROUD that we have provided a place for thousands of students to participate in the art and
pageantry that is contemporary marching band.
If you are here as an audience member, you are in for a treat. Those who bemoan the laziness and lack of work
ethic of today’s teenagers have obviously never attended an event like this. The students performing tonight
have worked countless hours, given up time in the summer and after school, endured heat and humidity that
would keep most sane people inside in the AC, and done repetition after repetition because their director told
them “one more time.” They make it look easy because of their hard work and dedication, but if you saw what
they go through to get here, you would know it’s ANYTHING BUT easy.
Those who cry that today’s youth are self-centered need to be here tonight. If you look closely you’ll see kids
working to build each other up. You’ll see kids who are competing against each other cheer for each other.
You’ll see students happily lend their shoes or an instrument to a student from another school because they all
know that we’re in this together. They know that we’re all stronger when we build each other up. If our world
were run entirely by band kids, I would have a lot more faith in the future.
And then there’s the part you don’t get the privilege of seeing. You don’t get to see the friendships formed and
strengthened. You don’t get to see the way the quiet rookies come out of their shell. You don’t get to see the
leaders emerge and reassure the new kids that they’ll be able to learn it because they went through the exact
same thing. You don’t get to see the way the awkward kids grow into confident young adults. I get to see all
these things, and they are what make me tell my students over and over that I have the best job in the world.
To the directors and the students here tonight, please know that we deeply appreciate your decision to perform
for us. We hope we can be some small part of your continued growth and development as you work through the
rest of your season. If there is anything you need to make your experience the best it can be tonight or if you
think of anything we can do to make the show more closely fit your needs in the future, please let me know.
We exist to serve you.
With kindest regards,
Gordon S. Rawls, Director of Bands
Midlothian High School

You Be The Judge!
Ever wonder how the judges pick the winners? How does the scoring work? Here’s a brief overview that will help you to be an educated spectator while you’re watching the shows.
Music Here at the Showcase, this caption is worth 40% of the Band’s Final Score. Every other caption
relates to at least partially to how well it complements the music. The music judge listens for tone quality both individually and as a group and blend and balance between and within the sections. He wants to hear good execution in articulation, technique, and precision across the band on the beginnings and ends of notes. He looks for musical aspects such as phrasing and expression.
Marching The marching caption tonight is worth 30% of the band’s final score. Marching is all about
the forms and the consistency of marching style throughout the ensemble. The marching judge wants to see lines that are straight from front to back, curvy lines that don’t have bubbles in them, and circles that don’t like eggs or amoebas. Looking from one side to the other, there shouldn’t be any gaps between marchers. Every marcher should be half-way between two other marchers. The judge wants to see the same style of roll-step from the entire band. In direction changes, the body should snap quickly and effortlessly to the new direction. Instruments should all be carried the same way and should be pointing in the same direction at the same height.
General Effect “GE” Even the objective criteria, it depends on the subjective opinion of the judge.
This judge assesses the overall effect of the entire show. This can include a little bit of everything from the horn angles to the design of the drill pictures to the colors of flags that the auxiliaries spin. Much of this caption refers to the “concept” of the show and how well the band executes that concept. Some bands try to add to this score by utilizing props, backdrops, costumes, and the “GE” moves. Others rely on the strength of the concept and the execution. A good band will be successful no matter which direction they go. This caption is worth 30% of the band’s final score.
Percussion Because the percussion sections are already included in the final score through their
execution of the music, marching and GE, this caption is not added into the final score. The judge will be watching to see how well the drum line and pit execute their music and their drill. The most obvious assessment is “are they playing together?” The judge wants to hear how musically they can play and how well they balance to the wind sections of the band.
Auxiliary This includes any part of the band whose members are not playing an instrument or
conducting. The most common parts of the auxiliary are color guard, dance, majorettes, and feature twirler. While each unit has its own criteria, the bottom line is … how is the unit executing its given routine on an individual and group basis? Are they together? Are they using the proper technique? How are they executing their drill? How is their performance enhancing the overall effect of the show? Because they are already included in the final score through the marching and GE judges, this caption does not count towards the final band score.
Drum Majors Marching band is one of the scariest things that band directors can do. On stage, the
director can control things, make adjustments, and help the group recover if the worst happens. In marching band, the director gets the band on the field and lets them go. The drum majors are responsible for running the whole thing. They keep the pacing of the show moving along. They provide a visual pulse to unify units in the band that are sometimes separated by as much as 90 to 100 yards. The judge wants to see them handle this responsibility with poise and confidence. The judge wants to see clear
10
conducting patterns. If there are multiple drum majors, the judge wants to see consistency in the patterns and the pulse. As will all other captions, the judge wants to see how the drum majors’ work effect the show as a total product. Because the drum majors’ work is critiqued through the marching and GE judges, their score is not included in the final score.
