1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 This report presents the results of the St Mary’s and Middle Row pupil survey, 2009.

1.2 The aim of the survey is to understand the pupils’ views on what they like and dislike about their current school and the kinds of activities they would like to undertake in the future. The survey also aims to understand any similarities across the two schools to identify where possible collaboration could take place.

1.3 The results of the survey will form part of the design brief for Middle Row and St Mary’s capital project (Primary Capital Programme).

2.0 SUMMARY OF RESULTS

What do you like/dislike about school?

2.1 From the results it is evident that pupils like school because of a wide range of reasons including friends, playtime and the playground.

2.2 At Middle Row, ‘learning’ was also an important factor contributing to pupils’ enjoyment of school (15% stated learning and a further 13% like schools because of mathematics), as were the teachers at St. Mary’s(13%).

2.3 When asked what they like doing most at school, the responses further reflected this, with the top answers being: ‘mathematics’ (18%), ‘art’ (15%), ‘playing football’ (13%), ‘playing’ (11%), and ‘P.E’ (10%).

2.4 When asked to state one thing they would change most about the school, the responses were wide and varied by school. At Middle Row ‘the toilets’ (with 21% of responses) were the top answer followed by the ‘food’ (13%). At St. Mary’s pupils’ top answers included ‘the food’ (14%)followed by ‘the playground’ (8%).

2.5 When asked about certain areas/facilities of the school, pupils were most positive about the computers (94% of pupils at Middle Row and 89% St.Mary’s liked the computers) followed by the display areas (86% at Middle Row and 84%). Pupils were least positive about the toilets (41% of respondents at St. Mary’s liked the toilets compared to 17% at Middle Row) and storage for coats (46% of respondents at St. Mary’s liked the storage compared to and 43% at Middle Row).

Home learning

2.6 More respondents at St. Mary’s school thought they have too much home learning (36% compared to 21% at Middle Row), whilst Middle Row respondents were more likely to state that they want more home learning (45% compared to 28% at St. Mary’s)

2.7 At both schools the most common tool/person to help with home learning was ‘a family member’ (70% at Middle Row and 66% at St.

Mary’s) and nearly half of pupils indicate that they do it themselves (45% at Middle Row and 43% at St. Mary’s).

After-school activities and sports that pupils would like to do

2.8 Overall, the most popular after-school activities were: ‘sports clubs’ (41% at Middle Row and 60% at St. Mary’s), ‘art club’ (36% at Middle Row and 45% at St. Mary’s), ‘cooking club’ (45% at Middle Row and 48% at St. Mary’s), and ‘computer club’ (35% at Middle Row and 30% at St. Mary’s).

2.9 The most popular sport to do/learn at school was ‘swimming’ (56% at Middle Row and 55% at St. Mary’s), followed by ‘football’ (42% at Middle Row and 46% at St. Mary’s).

2.10 In both schools, the majority of respondents indicated that they would like to help to keep animals (75% at Middle Row and 84% at St. Mary’s) and approximately half would like to help grow food (56% at St. Mary’s compared to 45% at Middle Row).

3 SURVEY RESULTS

Response rate

3.1 In total 364 questionnaires were returned from St. Mary’s and Middle Row primary schools. 148 responses were returned from Middle Row(equating to nearly 60% of the school population) and 216 were returned from St. Mary’s (just over 60% of the school population).

3.2 70% of respondents were KS2 pupils, 26% were KS1 pupils and just 1% of respondents were pupils in reception classes. See Figure 1 below.

3.3 Overall, 47% of respondents were male, 51% were female and 2% did not provide this information.

Question 4: What do you like most about your school?

3.4 Figure 3 below shows the most common themes/areas that pupils liked most about their school.

3.5 At Middle Row, ‘the playground’ was cited most by pupils (16%),followed by ‘learning and lessons’ (15%), ‘friends’ (14%), ‘mathematics ‘(13%), ‘playing/playtime’ (13%) and ‘swimming’ (9%). At St. Mary’s, pupils liked ‘friends’ (14%) followed by ‘teachers’ (13%), ‘football’(12%), ‘the playground’ (9%) and ‘the ICT/computer room’ (9%) and ‘playing’ (9%).

3.6 At St. Mary’s, Key Stage 2 pupils were more likely to state the ‘ICT facilities’ as their favourite feature of the school (12% of KS2 pupils stated this compared to 2% of KS1 pupils) as well as ‘after school clubs’(8% compared to 0%) and ‘teachers’ (16% compared to 8%). Key Stage 1 pupils, on the other hand, were more likely to state ‘the playground’(16% compared to 7%) and ‘playing’ (18% compared to 7%)1. See Figure 4 below.

3.7 Overall, the top five activities listed by respondents were ‘mathematics’ (18%), ‘art’ (15%), ‘playing football’ (13%), ‘playing’ (11%), and ‘P.E’ (10%).

3.8 At Middle Row the most common responses were: ‘art’ (21%), ‘mathematics’ (21%) followed by ‘P.E’ (19%). At St. Mary’s the most commons themes were: ‘mathematics’ (16%), ‘playing football’ (16%) and ‘playing’ (12%). 2 See Figure 5 below, Appendix I for table of results and Appendix II for comments relating to this question.

3.9 At St. Mary’s, Key Stage 1 pupils were more likely to state ‘drawing’(11% of KS1 compared to KS2 pupils), ‘playing’ (18% compared to 9%) and ‘reading’ (9% compared to 1%) than Key Stage 2 pupils. Whilst, Key Stage 2 pupils were more likely to state ‘art’ (12% compared to 2%), ‘playing champ’ (8% compared to 0%) and ‘football’ (16% compared to 11%).

Question 6: If there was one thing you could change about your school what would that be and why?

3.10 In both schools pupils provided a wide range of responses for this question, of which the most common were: ‘the food’ (14%), ‘toilets’(9%), ‘the playground’ (8%) and ‘uniform’ (7%).

3.11 At Middle Row, over a fifth of respondents cited ‘the toilets’ as the area they would like to change (21%), followed by ‘the food’ (13%) and ‘uniform’ (8%). At St. Mary’s, pupils had more varied responses, but the most common responses were: ‘the food’ (14%) followed by the playground (8%) the ‘sports grounds’ (7%) and ‘classrooms’ (7%).

3.12 A larger proportion of respondents at St. Mary’s school thought they have ‘too much home learning’ (36% compared to 21% at Middle Row), whilst Middle Row respondents were more likely to state that they wanted more home learning (45% compared to 28% at St. Mary’s)

3.14 In both schools, the most common tool/person to help with home learning was ‘a family member’ (70% at Middle Row and 66% at St.Mary’s), nearly half of pupils indicate that they do it themselves (45% at Middle Row and 43% at St. Mary’s). At Middle Row a considerable proportion of pupils also stated the Internet/PC (33% compared to 15% at St. Mary’s) ‘friends’ (21% compared to 7% at St. Mary’s) and ‘thelibrary’ (16% compared to 6%).

Question 9: Do you like the following at your school?

3.15 Out of all the areas and facilities listed for this question, pupils were most positive about the computers (94% of pupils at Middle Row and 89% St Mary’s liked the computers) followed by the display areas (86% at Middle Row and 84%). Pupils were least positive about the toilets (41% of respondents at St. Mary’s liked the toilets compared to 17% at Middle Row) and storage (46% of respondents at St. Mary’s liked the storage compared to and 43% at Middle Row).

3.16 The graph below highlights some large differences in opinion of pupils from the two schools. In particular, respondents from Middle Row were more positive about their school entrance than pupils at St. Mary’s (81% compared to 51%), whilst, more pupils at St. Mary’s liked their playground (83% compared to 66%). Considerably more pupils at Middle Row didn’t like the toilets. Please see Appendix II comments relating to this question.

3.17 At both schools, the main criticisms about the storage for coats related to the size of the storage (most thought it was too small), and main criticism about the toilets was that they smell, are small and dirty. Anumber of pupils at Middle Row were also concerned that the doors do

3.18 As can be seen by Figure 10 below, Key Stage 1 pupils at St. Mary’s were more positive than Key Stage 2 pupils about all aspects of the school except for the toilets (26% of KS1 respondents liked the toilets compared to 48% of KS2 pupils).

3.19 In particular, Key Stage 1 pupils were more positive about the dining room (82% compared to 45%) and the classrooms (98% compared to 66%).

3.20 At Middle Row, Key Stage 1 pupils were also more positive about all areas of the school. In particular, Key Stage 1 pupils were more positive about the storage (88% of KS1 liked the storage compared to just 32% of KS2 pupils) and the dining room (79% compared to 42%).

3.24 At both schools, the most popular sport to do/learn at school was swimming (56% at Middle Row and 55% at St. Mary’s), followed byfootball (42% at Middle Row and 46% at St. Mary’s).

3.25 The results for each of the schools were similar with the exception of tennis, which was more popular choice amongst pupils at St. Mary’s (34% compared to 19% at Middle Row)

3.27 This does, however, disguise some differences between the results of St.Mary’s and Middle Row schools. In particular, more Key Stage 1 pupils at St. Mary’s would like to play tennis at school (37% of pupils compared to 9% at Middle Row) and go swimming (60% at St. Mary’s compared to 41%). At Key Stage 2, more pupils at St. Mary’s would like to attend sports club (66% compared to 42%). Please see Appendix I for further details by school.

3.28 At Middle Row more than a quarter of pupils indicated that they swim (43%), play football (38%), use the internet (39%) and visit the library (26%) at least once a week.

3.31 Pupils were asked if they would like to help grow food or keep animals at the school.

3.32 In both schools, the majority of respondents stated that they would like to help to keep animals (75% at Middle Row and 84% at St. Mary’s) and approximately 50% would like to help grow food (56% at St. Mary’s compared to 45% at Middle Row).

3.33 Key Stage 1 respondents at both schools were considerably more interested in helping to grow food than Key Stage 2 respondents (66% compared to 36%) whist, a similar proportion of KS1 and KS2 pupils would like to help to keep animals.
