From Your Pastor REVIVE: Repentance
I’ve been thinking a lot about the subject of repentance this week and want to
be sure we don’t skip over the subject too quickly. To repent means to experience
a change of mind that leads to a change in our actions. Repentance involves our
mind because we must see sin for what it is (rebellion against God). Repentance
involves our heart/emotions because we experience heartfelt sorrow and grief
over our sin (because it is against our holy and gracious God). It also involves our
will as we determine (with the help of the Spirit) to change our behavior and ac-
tions. So, repentance is turning away from sin and simultaneously turning toward
God.
I said that we will be as serious about repentance as we are serious about the
holiness of God. We need to regularly be reminded that our God is completely holy
(separated from sin) and He calls us (His children) to live lives of holiness. As fol-
lowers of Christ, we should have a desire to turn from our sins and to seek to
honor Christ with our lives. Yes, a godly sorrow over sin and true repentance are essential components in
both personal revival and revival as a church family. As we discussed on Sunday
evening, we should regularly take some time to examine our heart and ask God to
show us the hidden sin in our lives. Sunday night I share with you about Bertha
Smith (missionary who often confronted and encouraged Pastors to consider their
personal repentance). If you didn’t make it Sunday evening, Bertha would get in
the face of a pastor, and she would say to him, “I want you to get serious; I want
you to get earnest and careful about repentance. I want you to get a large pad
and two or three pens, and you slip away into a private chamber, and you get down
on your face before God. You say, ‘O God, show me my sins.’ And don’t you dare
leave until God is finished.”
I wonder what God might do in our lives if we got serious about dealing with the
sin (especially the hidden sin) in our lives. I thought about all the things I con-
sider “minor” that I need to repent of not because they are minor but because
they are sin. I thought about not loving my neighbor as myself. I thought about
not being quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to get angry. I thought about my
failures to fulfill the great commission. I thought about allowing unwholesome
speech to come out of my mouth. I thought about the greed, lust, and pride I deal
with in my heart. No, I haven’t murdered anybody but that doesn’t mean there are
so many sinful things in my life that I don’t need to confess to God and seek His
help in turning from. I’m so thankful for the promise of 1 John 1:9 that tells us
that if we will confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to
cleanse us for all unrighteousness. Any sins you need to confess and deal with in
order to have personal revival???

MAKING DISCIPLES…
Question: How do we know there is a God
Answer: The light of nature in man, and the works of God, plainly declare that there is a God; but His Word and Spirit only, do effectually reveal Him unto us for salvation. Scripture: Romans 1:1:18-20; Psalm 19:1-2; 2 Timothy 3:15; 1 Corinthians 1:21-24; 2:9-10; Matthew 11:27. Comment: The question distinguishes two kings of knowledge: one is natural and comes from conscience (“the light of nature in man”) and from the works of God in nature; the other in spiritual or saving, and comes from the recognition of the true value of God and the beauty of His character. Natural knowledge is possessed by all people and thus makes all people accountable to honor and thank God. Spiritual knowledge is possessed only by those whose natural blindness has been overcome by the Spirit of God (1 Corinthians 2:14-16).
