From the Director: ”Snipp, snapp, snute, så var eventyret ute.” Anyone who has enjoyed Norwegian fairy tales, knows that phrase well. It comes at the end of a story. . .a story that has been told carefully and with reflective thought. And that could easily be applied to the school year that we know see coming to an end. So, welcome to the last issue of the Informer. Just where the time has gone, I cannot say, but the warmer weather and long bright days make the month of May an inevitable reminder that we will shortly be watching our graduates cross the stage to collect their hard-earned diplomas. This is the last issue of the Informer and includes much information on our final activities for this school year. Read on and mark your calendars to come and join us. During the final weeks of the school year, there is always a wonderful variety of events for our families to enjoy. Please feel free take part and enjoy every aspect of the final weeks—whether it is outside at one of the Field Days, or inside at one of the upcoming assemblies, you are very welcome. As our annual thank you back to the Parent Association, once again the administration invited the outgoing and incoming Parent Association Board members to breakfast on Tuesday, May 28 in the cafeteria. In a school that prospers throughout the year by countless acts of generous volunteering by a huge number of parents, how best can the administration thank each individual? We like to turn the tables and serve the parents, instead of us always watching the reverse in action. This breakfast is a symbolic way for us to extend our appreciation to each of these individuals and, in a wider sense, to all the parents in the school who give of their time throughout the school year. Thank you from all of us here at ISS. On a practical note, are you aware that if your child is leaving the school—either moving or graduating, we are happy to refund any unused funds from your school lunch account. To do this, just contact our receptionist, Ms. Anne Brit Winters. Our assumption is that anyone who is returning to ISS in August does not have a problem in leaving unused funds in their lunch account where they can again access them in August with the new year starting up. If our assumption is incorrect and you would like the money refunded now in June, that is fine—just communicate that information to Ms. Winters. On a normal basis, we recommend that during the school year parents check their children’s account about once a week to monitor the balances. This way if mistakes are made, they can be quickly corrected before too much time has passed by.

And for the future, we would also encourage you to re-fill your child’s lunch account online using your KID number.

This is also the issue of the Informer where I like to pay tribute to our ISS employees who will be ending their employment with the school at the end of the school year. The foundation of the institution is based on the skill of the people who work with your children on a daily basis. We are privileged to bring people to work at the school from a range of backgrounds and geographical origins. When they leave us, they leave an indelible, positive impression on the school and the children they teach and we thank them for sharing their time and their talents with us. Thank you very much to: Ms. Rachel AdkinsMr. Mark ChambersMs. Mandy ConnellyMr. Paul DuevelMs. Louise DunnMr. Jozef DurokMs. Shannon FisherMs. Natalie FranssenMr. Jason HowesMs. Sandy MathewsMs. Christina MattsonMr. Justin MattsonMs. Enza MauriMs. Maren MillerMs. Emma ReesMr. Jamie WengerMs. Jeanna Wenger Next year, this fine group of individuals will be sharing their talents in the following countries: Abu Dhabi, Germany, Italy, Oman, Spain, The Netherlands, the United States and VietNam. . . and, of course, Norway! We wish all of our colleagues who are leaving the very best as they move on to new opportunities and we thank each for their dedication and commitment to our students. Additionally, at the recent end of year gathering for the school employees, the following returning individuals were lauded for their long service to the school: 20 year anniversary: Ms. Belinda Kinnari, Ms. Lynn Park, Ms. Renata Magda Tuntland 30 year anniversary: Mr. Tor Inge Berge 40 year anniversary: Dr. Len Duevel Congratulations and a sincere thank you to these individuals for their decades of service to the school. Following this message, you will find some graphics that give an overview of how the school’s budgeted funds are used. As with most schools, the largest expenditure is salary and benefits. We are very fortunate that, unlike many other schools, we do not have any outstanding

mortgage payments with heavy interest payments to make. The figures you will see are connected with the 2012-2013 school year. In the autumn, once the Board of Trustees, following the normal policy, has approved the operating budget for the 2013-2014 school year, I will share those figures as well. The graphs will also be published on the same Edline account where members of our school community can see approved Board of Trustee minutes. The school office will be open all summer--drop by! Many think that once school is over for the year that we lock the doors and don’t open them again until August. In actual fact, the school is a busy place throughout the summer. Many “behind the scenes” activities preparing the school for August take place. A literal mountain of new supplies is processed during the summer.

One of the most important things that we do is welcome new families and give them tours of the school. The school will be open from 08:30 to 14:30 every Monday through Friday. You are welcome to come by with new families. We have received information on many, many new families who will be joining the school and we are always delighted to help them become more familiar with their new surroundings.

Have a safe, healthy and happy summer and we will see most of you and many new students back here in August! Regards,

Dr. Linda DuevelDirector

From the Deputy Director

Dear all,

As we reach the end of the academic year I thought it would be pertinent to provide you with an update on the Council of International Schools (CIS) and New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) re-accreditation process. At the beginning of the academic year I provided you an overview of the work ahead that can be summarized in the following diagram:

With the end of the academic year nearly upon the committee work for this year culminates with completion of the final draft reports in the following areas:

• Section A: School Guiding Statements

• Section B: Teaching & Learning

• Section C: Governance & Leadership

• Section D: Faculty & Support Staff

• Section E: Access to Teaching & Learning

• Section F: School Culture & Partnerships for Learning

• Section G: Operational Systems

These should be the final reports unless there are any significant changes over the summer in which case the reports will be updated in August.

Page 6: Informer May

6 ·THE INFORMER 29 May 2013 www.isstavanger.no

From the Deputy Director

In the new academic year our attention will turn to writing a further four reports based on the information generated over the course of this year. The Vertical Umbrella Report seeks to summarize the findings in the various individual vertical subject reports and the Horizontal reports seek to review the findings from a Primary, Middle and High School Perspective.

Once this has been completed the re-accreditation steering committee will meet to produce a Part 3 Report that outlines strategies for improvement. More specifically the report identifies or synthesises the main conclusions, identifies the main proposals for improvement and shows explicitly how these outcomes will be incorporated into the school improvement planning process.

We now have confirmed dates for the accreditation team visit and we look forward to welcoming 13 visitors to ISS on Saturday 29th March and visiting ISS through Friday 4th April 2014.

I would like to thank all who have participated in the process for their hard work, effort and contributions it is very much appreciated.

For those of you who are leaving ISS at the end of this year we hope that you have enjoyed and benefited from your time here at ISS and are able to take a part of your rich experience with you and share it with those you encounter in which ever part of the world you find yourself.

Finally,

Congratulations to the Class of 2013!

We wish you well in your future endeavors.

With kind regards,

Gareth JonesDeputy Director

News from the Exams Coordinator

As I write this, the IB examinations are finished, and the last of the parcels of papers is waiting to be sent off to the scanning centre in England so that examiners all around the globe can then mark their papers onscreen.

Again, this year I must congratulate the 12th grade students – there was not one unexpected absence or late arrival to an examination, and the students’ behaviour was impeccable!

We look forward to getting the IB results in July, and wish the students all the best in the next stage of their education.

IGCSE examinations continue, with the last examination for ISS students being 7th June. This year there have been many challenges with the IGCSE schedule, with ‘key time’ supervision requirements from Cambridge, and examinations which were quite widely spread but with also a number of major schedule clashes where students had to take two different subjects in one session. Students also had to come in to take examinations on public holidays, including 17th May!! Again I wish to congratulate the students on their positive attitude and patience over the last weeks.

11th grade students should now be working on their Extended Essays. Students had a very productive Extended Essay workday, and should now have a first working draft uploaded on ManageBac and a clear plan made with their supervisor about how to proceed over the summer vacation. The full/final draft of the essay is due to the supervisor by Monday 26th August. Effective use of time at this stage will help enormously as the work load increases during the 12th grade.

I have been very impressed this year by the commitment of many of our 11th graders to their CAS programme. I have enjoyed reading some of the students’ logs on ManageBac where the students reflect on what they have gained through the different activities. Especially pleasing are the number of excellent service projects that students have initiated this year.

I would encourage all 11th graders to ensure that they are up-to-date with all aspects of their IB programme, and review what they have covered in 11th grade in all their subjects – next May will come very soon!

9th grade students who are thinking of taking IGCSE examinations next year should also review what they have covered during the year, and I would encourage them to keep their 9th grade notes safe and organised so that they have them for review for the examinations at the end of 10th grade. Developing good study habits will certainly help them in future years.

Results information

IB students can access their results at https://candidates.ibo.org from 15:30 Norwegian time on Saturday 6th July 2013. Any students who have problems with the IBO site can contact me by telephone on Saturday evening only at 51 55 30 54 (from 17:00 to 21:00). IB students who have questions about their results (who wish to query their results, or investigate the possibility of retakes, or who would like the school to contact universities about their provisional offers) MUST contact me in school on Monday 8th July or Tuesday 9th July between 09:00 and 14:00. IB Diplomas are normally mailed to the school in late August or early September, and can be collected from school or sent by registered post to the address provided by the student.

IGCSE students can access their results at https://myresults.cie.org.uk on Wednesday 14th August 2013. Hard copy statements of results will be mailed to the school from Cambridge. Certificates will normally arrive at the school in September/October and can be collected from school or mailed by registered post to parents.

* Many offers from universities in Norway and other countries in Europe are not confirmed until after the IB results come out in July.

We are all extremely proud of our graduates and are confident that they will continue to exceed expectations as they pursue their various post-secondary endeavors.

When the going gets tough, remember:

“If not now, when? If not me, who?

If not, why not?”

Congrats and snakkes, Class of 2013!

To the Class of 2014, your time is just around the corner! Remember those summer postcards that you wrote to yourselves during our final junior seminar. Come August, you will reread them and revisit all the goals that you have set.

Definitely relax this summer, but be sure to also make time to plan for next year. This is the LAST SUMMER of your high school career! Make the most of your time so that you will enter your senior year recharged and ready.

As you wrap up this school year, be sure that in addition to the HIGH-5 goals, you have completed your self-evaluation forms and submitted your teacher reference requests to the high school office. It is essential that we have all of this information completed in order to process your university applications next year.

For 1 1th grade students planning to apply to study Medicine, Dentistry, OR Veterinary Science in the UK:

It is important to determine whether you need to take the BMAT or UKCAT admissions test. Information can be found at http://www.admissionstests.cambridgeassessment.org.uk/adt/bmat and http://www.ukcat.ac.uk/. Please make sure to check for deadlines and exam locations. Reference materials on preparing for these exams are available in the library.

For students interested in studying in the UK:

Open Days are currently scheduled for many UK universities. You can go to www.opendays.com for specific university Open Day dates.

Also consider a UK University Guided Tour go to www.osc-ib.com to view arrangements. Previous ISS students have utilized this service and found it very beneficial for choosing UCAS courses.

To all 10th, 1 1th, and 12th grade students interested in applying to colleges/universities in the U.S. or Canada:

The standardized tests PSAT/ACT/SAT will be offered at ISS on the following dates during the 2013-2014 school year: Recommended year levels for students to take the tests are indicated next to each test and its date.

Test DatePSAT Oct. 19, 2013 - for 11th graders (to be eligible for scholarships and as a ”practice” for the SAT; for 10th graders as a ”practice” for the SAT)

ACT PLUS Sept. 21, 2013 - 11th and 12th April 12, 2014 - 11th graders

SAT I or II Nov. 2, 2013 - 11th and 12th Dec. 7, 2013 - 11th and 12th May 3, 2014 - 11th grade

(SAT I and II cannot be taken on the same date)

To register for the PSAT sign up in August on the clip board outside of the Counseling Office.

To register online for an ACT exam that will be given here at ISS go to www.actstudent.org

To register online for an SAT exam that will be offered here at ISS go to www.collegeboard.com

PSAT - 11th graders take this exam as practice for the SAT as well as to be eligible for merit-based scholarships. 10th graders who also intend to take the SAT or ACT exam the following year should consider taking this preliminary exam for practice.

Your exam results will be published on line with SOAS (Summary of Answers and Skills) which indicates the areas for improvement. This exam is only offered in October during the school year.

SAT and SAT (II) Subject Tests - For current 10th and 11th grade students check the requirements of the universities you are considering applying to. If your desired university requires both the SAT and the SAT Subject Tests please be aware that you can only take the SAT OR SAT Subject Tests on a given day, therefore, plan accordingly and if you need both exams you will need to schedule two different test dates. Be sure to check the specific requirements if your university requires the SAT Subject Tests (they usually require 2-3 SAT II Subject Tests) and know that THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE SAT II TESTS ARE ONLY OFFERED IN NOVEMBER.

ACT PLUS WRITING TEST - For current 10th and 11th grade students check the requirements of the universities you are applying to. Many universities are now accepting the ACT Plus in lieu of the SAT subject tests.

Note: If a university accepts either the ACT or SAT, it might be useful to take each of these tests once during the eleventh grade to see which type of exam is the test of best fit. Then it is advisable to retake the exam, either the ACT or SAT, a second time during the fall semester of your 12th grade. Universities take the best individual scores from the test even if taken at two different times. If you are planning to apply for entrance into university for the fall of 2014 all of these exams must be completed by December 2013, if you plan to take them here at ISS.

*11th grade students should only consider taking these exams in the spring semester.

*12th grade students who are planning college entrance for fall 2014 should only consider taking these exams in the fall semester.

It is most helpful to become familiar with the format and content of these exams so please carefully review for them and use the study books that are available in the ISS Library and Counseling Office.

Additional information about these tests will be given at Senior Seminar and Junior Seminar next year.

H i g h S c h o o l N E W SIn early May all of the students in Grade 11 were involved in the Science Group 4 Project, a whole day event where the students were assessed on their ‘Personal skills’, more specifically their ability to work as a team, their determination, and their ability to reflect. They were randomly split into groups and given a challenge: ‘Time the length of a piece of music without using a ‘timing device’, just your ingenuity and your knowledge of Science’. The students had all day to do this in any way that they could imagine. Solutions ranged from using chemical reaction rates, variations on Rube Goldberg/Heath Robinson

machines, charging and discharging capacitors using electricity generated from vegetables, the Bernoulli effect, dripping water, designing a computer game in a virtual world, the Drinking Bird, sparklers, egg timers using sand, water pumps and thread, windmills, motors, and incredibly the chirping rate of crickets (apparently it is temperature dependent). The most accurate groups got within 1% of the true time and everyone had a brilliant day. Science at its best!

H i g h S c h o o l N E W SWhat is often perceived as being a hazardous and potentially dangerous area of Biology, Microbiology is actually a very common subject area practiced in IGCSE and IB Biology courses around the world. This is evident in the number of students undertaking Microbiology Extended Essays and why the IB Biology course has a Microbiology option.

You only had to have watched the news in the last few months to understand just how important this subject area is.

On the BBC in March, scientists warned of the increasing dangers of antibiotic resistance we all face in the coming years: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-21738774 and why such harmful diseases as gonorrhea, may be untreatable by 2015: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-22263030. It was therefore important at ISS that we made students more aware of this area of Biology.

In late 2012 after a period of consultation, our Health and Safety officer Sølve Ottesen, gave us the go-ahead to practice Microbiology at ISS for the very first time. After receiving some help and advice from our fantastic, resident Microbiology expert – Mrs Gilbert from Grade 8 Science – we were ready to go!

The first student to carry out an experiment was Ilse Ikaheimonen, who for her IB Extended Essay, investigated the effect of preserving meat with different salt concentration on microbial growth. Ilse was able to link this age old practice of food preservation to not only the Norwegian culture, but to different cultures from all around the world.

Following on from the success of Ilse’s project, we decided to integrate an experiment into the IB Biology course when studying Topic 2.2 Prokaryotic Cells. Therefore earlier this month, Grade 11 students investigated: The effect of increasing temperature on the population growth of Escherichia coli (E.coli).

At first you may be alarmed to read that we used E.coli, after everything you have read or watched in the news, especially the large scale outbreak in Europe in 2011. I wouldn’t be too alarmed though, as

you have already have E.coli in your intestines right now as you read this, and you are very much alive and well – not every strain is hazardous! In this experiment students found that low temperatures limited the growth of E.coli colonies, whilst a temperature of 37oC had the highest growth. At a temperature of 60oC, there was no E.coli growth at all.

Such experiments as this are excellent for consolidating student learning, as the Grade 11 students were able to link their knowledge of what they had already learnt in a number of topics across the IB Biology course, in order to draw their conclusions.

Through their previous study of enzymes, binary fission and populations, students were able to conclude that highest growth of E.coli colonies at a temperature 37oC, was the most optimal temperature for the enzymes in E.coli. As E.coli are usually found in the intestine of warm-bloodied animals such as humans, who have an approximate body temperature of 37oC, students were to relate their results to what would have been found naturally. No growth at 60oC was due to the enzymes inside of the E.coli denaturing and no longer being able to function in the cells metabolic processes.

This was an experiment which Grade 11 seemed to very much enjoy, as is evident in the photos and following on from the success of these two projects, we are now looking to implement some experiments into the IGCSE course in 10th Grade, as well as encourage more Extended Essay projects.

As discussed earlier in this article, this is a crucial period in the field of Microbiology and we believe that it is important that we provide our students at ISS with the knowledge, experience and skills, so that they can not only contribute to this field in the near future, but make a real difference to people’s lives around the world.

I wish you all the very best for the future.Jozef Durok

H i g h S c h o o l N E W SOn the morning of April 19th, 15 students in Grade 11 were dropped by minibus close to Orrevatnet. The challenge was to get all of them back to school on foot, navigating their way along sections of the coastal path and across beaches with the occasional section on the smaller country lanes.

They had to carry all of their camping equipment and food and stay together as a team. About 60km and 2 and a half days later, they finally arrived back at school exhausted and slightly more appreciating of some of life’s simpler pleasures, a soft bed, food that they don’t have to spend ages cooking, and no rucksack on their back. The successful students were Rashid Abdullayev, Brennan Bates, Thijs Blackstone, Kaja Brevik, Mark Danylchuk, Jorgen Elsborg, Amy Gildert, Kat Kabulska, Alex Lyon, Malene Monslaup, Amanda Holyoak, Sophie Newby, Sonja Peacock, Sandy Thistle and Sindre Tønder.

The students were really lucky with the weather, sleeping on the beach at Vigdel and also along the coast North of Tananger. The Award is designed to foster independence and to challenge students to step a little outside their comfort zone and all of the students who completed the walk will have faced a variety of challenges in getting to the end.

Teachers involved with the three trips this academic year have been Shannon Fisher, Steve McGill, Chris Wensink, Isabelle Bedard and Bronwen Hinton.

Middle School News and Events From May 15-May 19, six middle school students and two teachers from the music department at ISS traveled to Waterloo, Belgium to participate in the European Middle School Honor Girls’ Choir Festival through the Association for Music in International School (AMIS).

This festival, hosted by St. John’s International School, featured 116 students representing 18 international schools from across Europe and the Middle East. Under the direction of Mr. James Libbey, music performance coordinator at the International School of Luxembourg, and accompanied by Mr. Tony Mudra, music teacher at the International School of Stavanger, the choir performed 10 pieces in the beautiful Performing Arts Centre at St. John’s International School. The concert highlighted a world premiere, “Peace,” written especially for this festival by Canadian composer Mark Sirett. Next year, ISS will have the honor of hosting this European Middle School Honor Girls’ Choir Festival April 2-6, 2014. We are already looking forward to this wonderful event and the planning process is underway. Over the next couple of months and into next school year, you will learn more about this opportunity bringing students together from across Europe and beyond to make beautiful music here in Stavanger! More information about this festival from AMIS:

Talented soprano and alto girl singers in grades six, seven, and eight are selected through audition by

their teachers. Students then prepare their music at their individual schools before meeting fellow participants at the festival for three days of rehearsal and performances with guest conductors from the international community. Girls’ honor choir festivals are being offered in both Europe and Asia, in order to give the opportunity for more talented singers to take part in the event. AMIS festivals are a symbol of our heartfelt belief that music is a universal language. These festivals are also a celebration of our humanity. Sharing a passion for music, working in harmony to create rather than destroy, our students learn to respect those who are different. Bringing together students and teachers from many places not only furthers their education in music, but promotes cultural diversity and global unity. The six students representing ISS in Belgium were:

Congratulations to the students who participated in the track and field practices and meet. Beyond having fun, the students got a feel for being part of a team and learned skills in running, jumping, hurdling and throwing. Thank you to the many parents and staff who helped direct activities and teach skills. Thank you as well to the varsity track team for helping with the track meet, and to Ms Kathleen Henderson for arranging the practices and the track meet.

Congratulations in advance to the cast of the Primary School musical, Scheherazade for three great productions. Thank you to parents and staff for all that was done behind the scenes with the set and costumes. I send a special thank you to Ms Zsuzsi Kallenberg for coordinating costumes, Ms Fiona Hay and Ms Susan Campbell for lighting and Ms Christine Kemp as director for the musical.

As always there were highlights for this school year. I give a special thank you to students for the consistent hard work and good progress in learning, the community building of the ISS Parents Association, the assemblies for each grade level that put every child on stage, the visits by parents to our open house, share in our learning in homerooms and in music, reading stories and ideas of children, children’s art in the hallways and classrooms, processions honoring peace, kings, queens, nationalities, cultures, celebrations and

even “wild” animals, seeing the rising comprehension scores on student assessments, hearing children converse in many languages, children building number sense with blocks and calendar dates, returning children welcoming new children throughout the year, volleyball and track and field, scouts, sports offered through IBA, dance classes on Fridays, the winter concerts, both musicals, the trip to Soma Farm sponsored by the Parents Association, Outdoor Education Weeks with Grades 4 and 5, fantastic art displays, 100th day of school projects, class field trips to extend the curriculum, enhanced learning with new IT resources and share in our learning music days and the Grade 5 band in concert.

This spring marks a special spot in the history of ISS. From August 2013, there will be four divisions of the school:

• Early Childhood (Pre-School 3, Pre-School 4, Kindergarten and Grade 1),

• Primary School (Grades 2-5), • Middle School (Grades 6-8) and • High School (Grades 9-12).

Much will remain the same, but one big difference will be a new principal for the Early Childhood section. Many of you will have met Mrs. Jill Raven when she visited on two occasions this school year.

Farewell

We will say a fond farewell to some very special students and our staff members Rachel Adkins, Mark Chambers, Paul Duevel, Louise Dunn, Sandy Mathews, Christina Mattson, Emma Rees, Jeannie and Jamie Wenger. Lee Harper and Jenny Price will be at ISS, but they will be working with older students, and Aaron Ciuffo will be focusing on IT support. In August, we will welcome many new and returning staff members to our Early Childhood and Primary School staff and many new students are moving to Stavanger. Please welcome them and make them quickly feel a part of our community.

Our students in Grades 1 and 4 planted tulips in autumn. As springtime approached, I watched for the development, but it was a cold spring and the ground remained bare - yet I remained hopeful. All that time, I knew there were bulbs ready to germinate when the weather was ready.

The warm days in the middle of May gave just the spark needed for the plants to emerge. We grew them as part of an international project to record and compare results, yet I have come to see the tulips as an important metaphor of learning. While effort is an essential aspect in learning, it is also planting the seed or bulb in the right place with the best conditions that leads to growth. Someone once wrote that hope springs, but all during the process of learning, it is hope that stays constant, and it is the result of growth that springs.

Enjoy the summer after a year of hope and growth. Thank you for a wonderful school year, and I look forward to seeing so many of you in August.

Dance Class!

Dance classes ended on Friday 24th May with amazing performances from all four groups of students.

Children in Grades 2, 4 and 5 each performed one dance, and children in Grade 3 managed to perform two! It was wonderful to see both boys and girls performing together in some dances.

The 11th graders involved in the dance instruction, Amy Gildert, Liam Gilbert and Frances Jackson carried out the classes for their CAS programme (Community, Action, Service), an important part of the IB, which aims to provide students with opportunities for personal growth, self-reflection, intellectual, physical and creative challenges, as well as an awareness of themselves as responsible members of their communities.

For the first time this year, it looked like some of the dance classes would have to stop because there were not enough CAS students. However, a brave group of Middle School students took on the challenge and did an amazing job teaching students in Grades 3 and 5.

The Primary School students were very respectful, and the Middle School students showed great patience, learning how to work well with large groups of younger children.

Money was collected for Tree Aid following the performance, and a total of kr 800 was raised.

The charity supports projects which reverse poverty by transferring forestry and development skills so that villagers in remote areas of Africa can for example, grow trees to meet their daily needs, plant trees to protect their homes, farmlands and schools from being swamped by the desert, grow hedges to keep cattle and livestock from destroying their crops, and irrigate the trees to ensure a high survival rate.

Thank you to all parents who kindly donated money following the performances.

Dance Class will start again in August, and we look forward to seeing the professional dancers back in school!

News from the Health, Security, Safety and Environment (HSSE) CommitteeMs Sølve Ims Ottesen [email protected]

Despite the fact that as the weather becomes nicer and our students are ever more active outside, we are happy to report that the month of May has been a quiet month regarding HSSE and we have had no serious incidents or injuries to report. There have been several of our normally scheduled annual safety audits in the past week—the the school’s ventilation room and garage and also to the middle school classrooms. Beyond some additional tidying up needed in the garage, everything else looked good. Storage is always a challenge in a school, just like it undoubtedly is in a family’s closets at home. Just like your family, a spring clean-up will take place at the end of the school year here at ISS. On a related note—our thanks and gratitude go parent Mrs. Dawn Elsborg—she has done a magnificent job in clearing out and tidying up the “under theatre storage.” Dawn and Director Linda Duevel had a fine time uncovering some historical relics from the history of the school that had been tucked in corners since the school moved to the Revheim campus in 1982! Thanks, Dawn! Your efforts are very much appreciated and our goal now is to keep it as tidy as it is today! Clean and tidy = safety! The HSSE Committee is also working on updating our risk management assessments in connection with our school trips. While the school has always been very careful in its procedures in traveling with students, the HSSE Committee is working on developing a handbook to make the procedures even easier to keep updated. The result will be additionally helpful for teachers, tour leaders and parents and will underscore the school’s serious attitude toward the safety of its students whether they are here in Stavanger or venturing out on one of our many educational trips. At this is the last Informer of the year, I wish everyone in our school community a safe and healthy summer holiday!

RosemalingTraditional Norwegian painting

‘Rosemaling’ or folk art is about 350 years old. Why not come by and learn a bit more about this traditional way of painting?

My name is May Fjetland Field and I paint trays, bowls, kitchen roll holders, clocks, jewellery boxes, cradles, big trunks, small ornaments of different shapes and sizes – in short: anything that can be painted on!

You are welcome to bring me your own wooden item to be painted and also to choose your own colours.

Everything is painted by hand. Each piece is individually crafted as a unique gift or home decor. Bring a touch of Norway into your home with this traditional Norwegian art form.

I work from home (Øygardsveien 67, 4047 Hafrsfjord) and if you would like to see more of my painted items, please email me at [email protected] or phone me on 977 30 202.

Welcome!

The ISS Vision StatementThe ISS vision is to prepare students for greater glob-al participation by helping them become responsi-ble, empowered learners.

The ISS Mission StatementThe International School of Stavanger is dedicated to providing its students with English language education in a supportive, academically stimulating, and multi-cultural environment. We strive to fos-ter a love of learning, the development of individual skills and talents, and an awareness of the value each person has to society. Our goal is to enable students to succeed in continuing educational programs and to live as responsible and contributing citizens in the global community.

The International School of Stavanger (ISS), founded in 1966, is an independent, non-profit Norwegian foundation accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the Council of Interna-tional Schools. The school enrolls students from ages 3 through 18. ISS offers an international university preparatory curriculum that combines the best features of many national educational systems. Both the Inter-national Baccalaureate Diploma programme and the International General Certificate of Secondary Educa-tion external examinations are available to students.

In 2012, the school has an enrollment of over 800 students who represent some 54 nationalities, including students from six of the earth’s seven continents.
