N E X T MEETING The Mid-Atlantic Golf Course Super-intendents wi l l meet at The Tantallon Country Club on December 5, 1967 for gol f , cocktai ls, dinner and the annual election of o f f i c e rs for the year 1968. The course wi l l be open for golf al l day, weather permitting.

THE COURSE Construction of the course began in October of 1961 and was completed in May, 1962. The following August the front nine was opened for play. The back nine was not opened for play until May 1963, due to no irr igat ion for the newly seeded Penncross greens.

M A I N T E N A N C E The fa irways receive 3 pounds of actual nitrogen per acre per year . The fa i rways have a quick coupling sprinkling system and rece ive l n water per week.

The greens are Penncross bent receiv ing 8 to 10 pounds of actual nitrogen per 1000 square feet annually. Several of the green bases were improper ly mixed, there fore leaving layers of turface, sand, humus and top soil. I r regular mix causes poor internal drainage.

The greens are cut three t imes weekly at 5/6M during the summer months and 1/4" during the cool season. The greens are dethatched, top dressed and aer i f i ed in the spring and fal l .

The roughs are thick with trees and dif f icult to maintain. Future budgeting wi l l include tr imming, removal of dead t rees , l ime, top soil , seed and f e r t i l i z e r .

D IRECTION TO THE CLUB Direct ions to The Tantallon Country Club: F rom Bal t imore, take Balt imore-Washington Parkway to the Capital Beltway or 495 South, to Indian Head Highway, exit 37 South to Fort Washington Road. Turn right on Fort Washington Road approximately 2 mi les and then turn right on St. Andrews Dr ive into the Club. F rom Washington, fo l low directions f rom 495 only.

PRESIDENT 'S MESSAGE Ange lo Cammarota In the January message I wrote something about the two heads of Janus and the wisdom of looking back on our experiences be fore we move forward; there fo re , in my final message to you I would like to attempt doing this. I w i l l repeat what I said at the end of 1966 in expressing my appreciation to all for the cooperation I rece ived f rom the Board of D i rec tors , the various committee members and the major i ty of our members who took an active part in helping make 1967 a year to r emember , f rom the successful conference in Washington, D . C . to the last meeting at Sparrows Point. The increased attendance at the membership meetings and the near 100% attendance at the Board meetings are an indication of what to expect in the future. An act ive and interested membership can only produce a progressive and successful organization.

We shall long remember those in our organization that have passed away recent ly , also the ret ir ing members who devoted their personal t ime and thoughts in an unself ish e f for t to improve our organization for the benefit of each individual member . They have c leared the undetbrush and broadened the path. The open road is be fo re us. We must grade and pave this road so that we can accelerate the journey to our ultimate goals. We can say confidently that our destiny is in the hands of our energet ic young men entering our f ie ld. Their energy, guided by the exper iences of the past, can certainly produce a bright future for the superintendent of tomorrow.

We are at the dawn of a new era, the era of acce lerated progress . Prepare yourselves to keep pace with this progress unless you choose to remain by the wayside.

Be f o r e I al low my enthusiasm to take me into the next N E W S L E T T E R , I thought of an appropriate passage taken f rom the Sanskrit cal led: "Salutation to the Dawn. " "Look to this day for it is l i f e , the ve ry l i fe of l i f e . In its br ie f course l ies all the var i t ies and rea l i t i es of your existance: the bl iss of growth, the g lory of action, the splendor of beauty. Yesterday is already a dream and tomorrow is only a vision, but today we l l l ived makes eve ry yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope. Look we l l there fore to this day. Such is the salutation to the dawn. "

Space w i l l not permit me to outline al l the benefits I rece ived f rom serving this fine organization. I am looking forward to seeing all of you at our meeting at Tantallon Country Club.

G O L F C O M M I T T E E Bert Yingling It was a cold day at Sparrows Point where 23 members and guests participated in our Blind Bogey Tournament.

The host (A1 Watson) even had his men out clearing the leaves so that we cound finish our round of golf be fore dark.

John Jendrosak, the pro, started the pr izes off by o f fer ing a pair of shoe t rees to a blind draw winner who turned out to be Paul Aman. P r i z e s for the blind bogey tourney as fo l lows :

Dave Rhame - 6 balls A l Watson - 4 balls Robert Mi l l igan - 3 balls Dave Fairbank - 2 balls Grafton Lumsden - 2 balls B i l l Matt inly - 2 balls

About Cal i fornia - I think that al l go l f e rs who don't take advantage of the invitation ex-tended to al l superintendents to play the courses on the Monterey Peninsula will be missing the chance of a l i f e t ime . I 'm Cal i fornia bound!

Country Club of Fa i r fax - Sam Kesse l , Superintendent Sam is working on two fa i rways at the present, Numbers 16 and 17 are undergoing a complete rebuilding job. This late in the year it looks like it w i l l be a sod job for sure to repair them and ready them for spring. Sam says two acres of sod wi l l probably do the t r ick. Twin Lakes Golf Course - Charles Cro ley , Superintendent We l l , Charles has moved again! This t ime f rom a batchelor apartment to one with much more room. Seems that on December 1st, Char l i e fs getting marr ied to Faye Co l l i e r . You al l know her f rom G. L . Cornel lTs o f f i ce staff. She is the pretty gal at the recep-tion window. Their new address is Apt. B3-11, 10570 Main Street, Fa i r fax .

P inecrest Golf Centers - Ken Lohr , Superintendent Ken has put his Uganda bermuda greens to sleep for the winter. It sure seems a shame that Fa i r f ax County w i l l inherit those unusual greens, but there is no choice.

Reston Golf Club - Mike Burkholder, Superintendent The possibi l i ty of overhauling the entire irr igat ion system is facing Mike this winter if funds w i l l al low. The main thing that w i l l be done is to enlarge the pumps.

Fo r t Be lvo i r Golf Course - Tom Doere r , Superintendent The course at Belvo ir w i l l be seeing some 150 new trees in the next month. Tom wi l l be putting a var iety of f lowering crabs, dogwoods, white pine, and deodora cedars throughout the course.

Springf ie ld County Club - Denny McCammon, Superintendent The i rr igat ion system is underway. Much of the mater ia l is on the site and if the weather holds, things should be in good shape for digging. A new sand trap on #8 is also com-plete now. That boosts the course rating an extra 1/2 stroke that was lost in the spring.
