Micropipettes & Aseptic techniques
In the micropipettes and aseptic techniques workshop, we practiced our skills in micro-
pipetting and how to isolate bacteria colonies on Petri dishes. For the micropipette section of
the workshop we learnt the importance of pipetting adequately for precise volumes. We
conducted a basic experiment where we mixed different substances at different volumes, and
watched them change color. When we compared the colors with our neighbors we noticed that
the colors were different even though we were all using the same substances and volumes.
With this we were able to see that for a solution to work properly it must have adequate
volume. In the aseptic techniques part of the workshop we were taught how important the
algor solution is in the plate, since it is a substance that bacteria cannot eat through. We also
learned how to isolate bacteria colonies without contaminating the plate. Isolating bacteria
colonies properly is very important so you can be sure that you’re studying a specific type of
bacteria. These techniques can be easily applied in any sort of research related to bacterial and
microbial studies.
