Vestry candidate profiles, cont’dJames, I have developed wonderful friends who have truly become family. St. James is a vibrant place with much to offer, and I believe our best years are ahead of us. With our committed congregation, we can make a real difference in our community. This is an exciting time in the life of our church, and I loook forward to being a part of it.”

Lucy Bowers (a/k/a Lucy McGough, law professor at LSU) has been a member of the St. James community since moving to Baton Rouge in 1981 when she and her late husband,

Jim Bowers, joined the LSU Law faculty. The seven children of their blended fam-ily grew up in Baton Rouge and St. James Church. Lucy was educated at Agnes Scott, Emory University Law School and Harvard University Law School and joined the Epis-copal church in college, being drawn by both the incredible spiritual beauty of the Book of Common Prayer and the church’s willingness to assume courageous leader-ship during the Civil Rights movement. At St. James, Lucy has been a lector, member of the Altar Guild, and very active in many of the Outreach services of St. James. She was a member of the Vestry from 1998-2001 and chaired the Millennium commit-tee. She has taught Sunday school aided in Vacation Bible School, and has assisted in services at St. James Place. She has been a member of the Board of Trustees and Board of Visitors of Episcopal School. After a few years away, Lucy returned to Baton Rouge in 2015 and still teaches at the Law School. Lucy declares, “St. James is a meeting place of very interesting people, many of whom have become friends. This is a comfortable but not a complacent community. You can feel a new energy welling up. I am so grateful for this home away from home, and I would like to see it grow, bloom, and prosper.”

Linda Bowsher, a na-tive of San Antonio, Texas, and a graduate of Wellesley College, she and her family moved to Baton Rouge in 1977 from Wash-

ington, D.C., when her attorney husband joined a law firm here. Linda’s involvement

Patrick Broderick is a lifelong member of St. James Episcopal Church. Pat is a gradu-ate of Episcopal High School of Baton Rouge and LSU, where he re-ceived a B.S. in Civil Engineering and an

MBA. He is the civil/environmental engi-neer for TESI, a private water and waste-water utility company. He has three grown children, and a college son, Peter, all of whom were raised at St. James Church and Day School. Pat has previously served on the Associate Vestry, a prior Rector Search Committee, chair of the Steward-ship Committee, president of the St. James Day School Board, and Junior Warden. He is presently serving as the interim chair of the Property Committee, Finance Com-mittee member, Capital Improvements Committee member, usher and lector. Pat shares that, “I have been privileged to be guided and inspired by the wonderful communion of saints at St. James. I want to preserve and enhance the best of our traditions while expanding our vision into needed service projects and popular ministries in the best tradition of St. James Church.”

Stephen E. Broyles has for 48 years been married to his loving wife, Bobbie, and for all of their 41 years of residence in Ba-ton Rouge have been members of St. James.

Both are life-long Episcopalians. A gradu-ate of LSU Law, for the past 42 years he has been in private practice, primarily defending accident and injury suits. Prior involvement in activities at St. James has been one of the most satisfying parts of his life. Many years ago, he and Bobbie taught Sunday School for wonderful first graders; since then, he has served on the Associate Vestry, including as president, and the Vestry, including senior warden. Committee memberships, some as chair, include the Long Range Planning, Build-ing, Outreach, and Finance, along with participation in Stewardship campaigns. Much of his service was during the period of the expansion of the facilities resulting in the construction of Bishops Hall, the Ministries Center, and renovation of the Parish Hall. Steve relates, “It was very ex-citing, challenging and rewarding to work with so many fine parishioners who had the interests of St. James at the forefront and to assist in bringing those visions to fruition. We are now at a point where, with the selection of a new rector, the path of St. James will be forged anew. I welcome the opportunity to be a part of that and would be honored to serve you and St. James Episcopal Church.”

at St. James in the nearly 40 years since has included stints teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School when her girls were children, serving two terms on the Vestry (including serving as Clerk), serv-ing as president of the St. James Day School Board and subsequently working as the school’s Advancement Director for several years. She and her husband have been stew-ardship volunteers numerous times, and have co-chaired a stewardship campaign. A graduate of the Education for Ministry course (twice), she currently serves as a lec-tor, an Altar Guild member and as secre-tary for the Center for Spiritual Formation board. Linda shares that, “I think St. James has experienced a lot of healing during Fr. Joe’s time here; my wish is for that to con-tinue as we look forward to calling a new rector. St James is blessed to have so many people willing to give of their time, talent and treasure to serve God and the Baton Rouge community here at the corner of Convention and Fourth Streets. I am happy to do all that I can to further that work.”

Susan “Susie” Wood Furr was born in Alex-andria, Virginia, where her father, the late Rev. Charles A. Wood, was attending seminary. Susie is married to Joey Furr, a local landscape architect, and they have

three children, all of whom were confirmed and attended Pre-K at St. James. Susie has been a lifelong Episcopalian and began at-tending St. James close to 20 years ago, and has served as lector in the As You Are ser-vice for many years. Susie attended LSU, where she received her undergraduate and

According to Bob, “For years members of our con-gregation have selected our church when other churches were much closer to their homes. My goal for the future is to focus on and take full advantage of the economy and, more importantly, the influx of hun-dreds of new residents, families of the best

Susie says, “So many things in the world are changing and challenging organized religion, and it is im-portant for the church to find new ways to demonstrate its relevance in people’s lives, particularly as a source of comfort and ref-uge for people who are searching for mean-ing, assistance and belonging. My hope is for St. James to maintain and expand on its relevance in the lives of parishioners and our community.”

Nile met his wife, Connie (a native of Shreve-port), in Baton Rouge and they have two children, Elisabeth (4) and John Robert (1). Anita Byrne and Lau-ren Whatley joined the St. James family in 2015 after attending services since 2013. They were married at St. James in 2016. At St. James, they have found a church home with a strong

sense of community and service. Anita is a native of New Orleans who has made the Capital City home after graduating from Louisiana State University with Honors. She is a partner with SSA Consultants, a business management and organizational development consulting firm, where she works with organizations ranging from nonprofits to Fortune 500s to public agen-cies to improve their performance.

Chetwin Carter, con-firmed at St. James Church in 2007, is a native of Baton Rouge and is a graduate of the College of Business at Southern Uni-versity. He is currently a high school social studies

of Business. He served on the board of the Baton Rouge Green for six years and was president of the organization for two of the six years. Currently, he serves on the board of Quality Deer Management Asso-ciation and West Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce and is still very involved with Baton Rouge Green. INVITES YOU TO EXPLORE OUR LIFE AND MINISTRIES Messenger

The

We proclaim Christ crucified and risen, and invite all to join with us in ministry together in his name.

The MESSENGER is the monthly magazine of St. James Episcopal Church, containing extended news of parish programs and events.

Readers are encouraged to use the online version to enjoy color photographs and graphics, easy links to contact information, maps, reference materials, and more at www.stjamesbr.org.

If you know of someone who cannot receive the electronic version, nor is able to pick up a paper copy available in the narthex, foyers and vestibules, please share their name with us so other arrangements can be made — or better yet: pick up a paper copy at church and bring it to them on a visit, yourself!

joan of arc

All women of the church are invited to the Joan of Arc Study Group, held at noon on the first Wednesday of the month, during the academic year, hosted by various members of the group.

The Joan of Arc Study Group is looking at some of the Miracles of Jesus in their 2016-2017 first-Wednesday meetings. The group next gathers for study on Wednesday, January 4 at noon, hosted by Susan Rolfs.

Please contact Nina Broyles for more information on the Joan of Arc Study Group.

St. Mary’s Bible Study resumes in JanuarySt. Mary’s is a new Bible Study group for women who are in their late-20s to 50-ish. The group will meet next on the third Thursday in January (and each month, through April), at 6:30 p.m. in a member’s home, with volunteer lists for snacks. We’re meeting at 6:30 p.m., hoping it’s convenient for both those who work outside the home or inside the home. Our study theme this year is “Women in the Bible,” but there are no reading assignments or homework. All you need to do is show up! If - and only if - you would like to lead a lesson, you may volunteer to lead one of the six lessons for the year. Please contact Mary Boutwell ([email protected], or 225-421-3543) or Anna Catherine Soule ([email protected], or 205-242-1290) if you are interested in this group.

By Helen Campbell and Trey RobertsThe Search Committee has completed the church profile and Office of Transitional Ministry documents. Beginning in January the Committee will receive and review names from the national church directory, the Diocese of Louisiana, as well as those already coming in from parishioners. (You can submit a nomination for consideration, here.) All names submitted by parishioners must be sent to the Diocesan office for clearance.

The timeline for calling a new rector has not been set. It is the hope of the committee that we will find several qualified candidates and will be able to complete the process in the spring. We continue to ask for your prayers as we pursue the serious work of finding the next rector for our church.
