End of the Year Reminders It’s already that time of year! This is our final edition of the Moreland Messenger for this school year. Summer fun is right around the corner! You can help your child keep those skills sharp over the summer with just a few minutes of practice a day. Practicing and mastering math facts, reading daily, and keeping a summer journal are just a few ways your child can maintain learned skills and start the 2019-20 school year feeling confident. **Remember, our last day is Thursday, June 6, 2019. Students will be dismissed early at 11:30 am.

5th Grade Recognition and Celebration On Thursday, June 6th, we will be hosting our annual Fifth Grade Recognition and Celebration. Parents are welcome to attend this special event that will take place at 10:00am in the MHS Gymnasium. Please plan to sign in at the front office prior to the celebration. Seating will begin at 9:30 for our visitors. Students will be entering the gym at 9:50am, and we ask that all guests are seated at this time. We will begin with a few brief remarks, and then students will be called up individually to receive their recognition certificates. Our PTA will be hosting a reception immediately following the recognition celebration in Cafe 2. The traditional 5th Grade Clap-Out will take place between 11:15 am and 11:30 am as part of our early dismissal process. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Alex’s Lemonade Stand The second grade gifted students will be participating in a service learning project called Alex's Lemonade Stand on Wednesday through Friday, May 15-17. They will be serving juice, per our wellness policy, and offering lemon themed games during lunch times for the students and staff at Moreland Hills. This event will culminate the students' human body unit and their research reports on various diseases. Our goal is to raise $1,300 for Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. This organization raises money and awareness for pediatric cancer research. Please help us make a difference for children with cancer by visiting our class fundraiser page and making a donation today. Here’s the link to our page:

________________________________________________________________________________________________________ School Health - Pink Eye (Red Eye) The American Academy of Pediatrics defines Pink Eye as when the white of the eye becomes pink or red. Conjunctivitis is the medical name for Pink Eye. The conjunctiva is the membrane that covers the white of the eye and can become pink or red when infected or irritated. There are many causes of Pink Eye.

● Viral conjunctivitis is the main cause of pink or red eyes without pus. Most often, it is part of a cold.

● Bacterial conjunctivitis is a pinkeye plus the eyelids are stuck together with pus. ● Allergic conjunctivitis is from pollens. Most children with eye allergies can also have nasal

allergies (Allergic Rhinitis). Symptoms include sneezing and clear nasal discharge. ● Irritant conjunctivitis is from sunscreen, soap, chlorine in pool water, smoke, or smog.

Irritants can also be transferred by touching the eye with dirty fingers.

Pink Eye is not a public health risk. Pink Eye with watery discharge is harmless. Children with pink eyes from a cold or who are being treated for allergic rhinitis do not need to miss any school. Pink Eye from an irritant will usually last about 2 hours once the irritant has been removed. If the pink eye develops pus causing the eyelids to stick together, seek medical treatment.
