Message from the President John Van Keuren: (201) 445-3960 / [email protected]

So. Here’s October trying to creep in on little cat’s feet like Carl Sandburg’s ‘fog’, but it can’t…because of the prominent early-month exploits of the Yankees [Ed. Note: this was written before the evening of October 5th] and Giants and Jets and Powerball. And, more to the point, because of the resurgence of our specialized Activity Groups and because of

the great Club meeting presentation about Woodstock that we had just a few weeks ago. And as if to show that the September meeting was no fluke, wait ‘til the Octo-ber meeting. Our speaker will be Rachelle Morales from the Valley Hospital Department of Community Health, talking about ‘Healthy Aging’…a timely and useful top-ic for all of us. So, after our September meeting gave us a look back to our younger days, October will help us to better prepare for what’s coming.

Cares and Concerns Steve Beiter: (973) 304-1023 / [email protected]

In a strange coincidence, two members of the Activi-ties Club family were recently carted off to the Valley Hospital Emergency Room with similar symptoms. The illnesses were very short term, and extensive testing re-vealed no new disease. The victims were Eleanor (Mrs. Bob) Willes and your editor, Ron Greenberg. Monthly General Meeting John McCabe: (201)445-6531 /[email protected]

Our September meeting framed a beautiful visit down memory lane, to the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair with Jim Shelley. Jim currently lives within an hour of the concert site and regularly volunteers at the museum commemorating the event. Jim was a Notre Dame student when he attended the original 1969 incar-nation of Woodstock. Club member Skip Huisking also attended Notre Dame and the Woodstock event, but did not meet Jim Shelley until many years later. With the good fortune of their subsequent meeting, Skip was able to coordinate a very interesting presentation at our Club’s first face-to-face General Meeting since early 2020.

Hiking Last Tuesday monthly, weather permitting

trails, at one point observing the highest point in Morris County, as attested by the accompanying picture. We refer to this spot as Point Nada Vista since, surrounded by heavy forest, there is no scenic view from this partic-ular high point. About half-way around the trail, we en-countered two hikers carrying a five-gallon bucket. We asked if they were out foraging or collecting mush-rooms. Nothing edible there – they were collecting sam-ples of mosquito larvae from woodland pools in the Res-ervation. The two Morris County employees were using the larvae in educational demonstrations on mosquito control. Fortunately, since we had all applied our insect repellants, our exposure to the little buggers was mini-mal. After the hike, we stopped by J ’n’ C Barbecue in Butler to replenish our strength with some delicious smoked meats.

Hikes are scheduled for the last Tuesday of each month, and are usually 3 to 5 miles in length, rated easy-to-moderate by the NY-NJ Trail Conference. We meet at the Community Church parking lot at 9:00 AM. Ac-tivities Club members interesting in joining the Hiking Group should contact Lee Cunningham at [email protected] (put “HIKE” in the subject line) or 201-874-9705 to leave a message or text.

Our next meeting will be via Zoom -- hopefully, the November meeting will be in person. At September’s

meeting we learned how modern scientists, using new devices and performing many painstaking experiments, rigorously proved the existence of atoms, just as lightly-equipped philosophers had predicted thousands of years ago. This month we’ll learn how scientists not only picked apart atoms, but peered inside their core compo-nents: protons and neutrons. We’ll also review the sci-ence news of the month, so be ready to share with fellow members any science news items that interested you .

That’s Wednesday October 13th starting at 1:30 PM. I am looking forward to seeing your images then – and bring a friend!

You don't realize how old you are until you sit on the floor

and try to get up.

Old age comes at a bad time! When you finally know every-

thing, you start to forget everything you knew.

..when my oldest daughter goes on social security

..when I won’t buy green bananas

..when I put my long-term care policy number in my application

for assisted living
