Water Hammer (Surge Control) Analysis

SURGE CONTROL SOLUTIONS FROM MEIL

Page 27: Meil Profile Ppt

Water Hammer (Surge Control) Solutions

Surge or Water Hammer is a serious cause of damage in pipelines caused by a sudden stoppage of pumps. MEIL has been a technology leader in the design, manufacture and supply of solutions for Surge Control (Water Hammer Control).

It is our proud privilege to place on record that we are one among only two organizations having got the similar technology in India. MEIL has supplied thousands of water hammer control devices for hundreds of projects in the government sector as well as private projects.

Computerized Surge Analysis

Our end-to-end solutions in surge control start with a computerized analysis of the surge in the pipeline using our THOR software developed in-house by our own experts. We can also provide analysis using the SAP software to clients who need this. This analysis uses the pumping main data provided by the client.

The design of surge protection system is an iterative process in which a particular protection is proposed, water hammer analysis is made for that choice for power failure condition, the resulting surge pressures are evaluated, the protection system is modified based on the evaluation and the process is repeated until an adequate and economical protection system is arrived at surge or water hammer analysis.

Based on the computerized surge analysis, we recommend the best possible surge control solutions for the project. MEIL also manufactures and supplies the water hammer control devices required for surge control. Among the various types of devices, the three most common ones are shown below.

Page 28: Meil Profile Ppt

Passive Water Hammer Control Devices

MEIL has developed two types of passive Water Hammer Control Devices, i.e., the Proportional Spring Loaded Check (PSLC) Valve and the Quick Release Damped Air (QRDA) Valve which can be supplied in different sizes depending on the requirements of the project.

MEIL has been manufacturing these valves in-house for their own use for more than twenty years. Now, all these "Megha Brand" valves are now being manufactured by one of the Associate Company, Spinneret India Limited, Mumbai.

Our valves are designed with minimum maintenance and supervision. The robust design withstands the natural elements over many years with minimal or no maintenance. These two types of valves are passive devices requiring no power supply for their operations.

WarrantyWe provide a one year warranty on all parts of valves. However, we are not liable to replace excessively damaged parts when the damage is caused by mishandling or unauthorized maintenance activities on these valves.

Active Water Hammer Control Devices – AIR VESSELS

MEIL also manufactures and supplies custom made Air Vessels for active surge control. These devices are located in places where electric power is available, e.g., near the pump house. Air Vessels are usually recommended when the pipelines are carrying large flow rates and/or the flow velocities are high.

WHY GRP PIPES ?

Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) Pipes represent the ideal solution for the

abduction of any kind of water, chemicals, effl uent and sewers, because they

combine the advantage of corrosion resistance, typical of plastics, with a

mechanical strength which is comparable with the steel ones. Typical properties that result in advantages in GRP pipes

application, can be summarized as follows:-

Page 36: Meil Profile Ppt

ADVANTAGES OF GRP PIPES1) Very Long Life,

Virtually infinite

2) Light Weight

3) Low Maintenance Cost

4) Easy Installation Procedure

5) Cost Effective

6) Corrosion Resistance

7) Smooth Surface

8) Hydraulic Efficiency

9) Surge Pressure

10) Flexibility

11) Fire Resistance

12) Excellent Fatigue Resistance

13) On Site Reparability

14) Compatibility

15) High Strength to weight Ratio

16) Dimension Stability

17) Low Thermal Conductivity

18) Proven Viable Alternative ~ Growing Demand

Page 37: Meil Profile Ppt

1) Very Long Life, Virtually infinite

The hydraulic design basis (HDB) of GRP pipe is such that even after 50 years of continuous service, the smooth inside surface is maintained throughout the entire life of the pipe.

2) Light Weight

GRP Pipes have a high strength to weight ratio. They are light in weight in comparison to Steel Pipes, C. I. Pipes and PSC Pipes, ensuring ease in handling and quicker installation. HDPE and PVC Pipes weight is more than GRP pipe due to higher thickness.

3) Low Maintenance Cost

GRP pipes are virtually maintenance free throughout the life because of absence of corrosion.

Page 38: Meil Profile Ppt

4) Easy Installation Procedure Laying of GRP pipes is a simple operation which can be

done in short periods of time both above and below ground, as sleeve joints and spigot and socket joints enable fast and reliable assembling. The use of heavy equipment is practically eliminated.

5) Cost Effective GRP pipes are cheaper than D.I.Pipes, M.S. Pipes, C.I. Pipes &Pre-stressed Cement concrete pipes.

6) Corrosion Resistance

Both the external and internal walls are in contact with the conveyed fluid. No protection such as coating, painting or mortar lining are needed. GRP pipes are resistant to nearly all chemicals even at much higher temperatures (upto 1400C) than other plastic materials.

Page 39: Meil Profile Ppt

7) Smooth SurfaceSmoothness of the internal wall of GRP pipe minimizes the head losses and avoids the formation of deposits and also minimizes the slope. The interior pipe surface remains smooth over time in most fluid services. Therefore fluid resistance does not increase with age. The smooth interior allows the pipe diameter to be reduced while maintaining the desired flow.

8) Hydraulic EfficiencyBecause of higher “C” Value (150-160), frictional losses in GRP Pipes are much less compared to those of conventional pipes. Hence, recurring energy charges and pumping cost are lower in GRP Pipes.

9) Surge PressureDue to its inherent characteristic, Wave Celerity value is lower than conventional pipes. Thus water hammer in GRP pipes is less. Moreover, since GRP pipes can withstand pressure upto 1.4 times the surge pressure than the pipes in its on class  thus it is  better poised than others to minimize risk of pipe bursting due  to water hammer.

Page 40: Meil Profile Ppt

10)A Flexible Pipe, Not a Rigid PipeUnlike thick walled pipes with a high stiffness factor, which do not permit even very small deformations, GRP pipes constitute a homogeneous system together with the earth around them and transfer outside loads to the surrounding earth. Correct burial enhances the safety in case of working conditions which may be usually worse than those foreseen in the design.

11)Fire ResistanceGRP offers versatility in design and can be made fire resistant by proper selection of resin system.

12)Excellent Fatigue ResistanceUnder cyclic loading, GRP provides very high resistance to fatigue which enhances its performance for longer life.

13)Site ReparabilityGRP pipes are easily repairable at site or on field by means of butt-wrap Joint.

Page 41: Meil Profile Ppt

14) CompatibilityGRP Pipes are compatible with DI, CI & Pre-stressed cement pipes. In addition to DI, CI fittings, GRP couplings/ GRP flanges can be used to join pipe directly to these materials.

15)Strength to weight Ratio The pipe has excellent strength to weight property. When the ratio of strength per unit of weight is considered, GRP composites surpass iron, mild steel, HDPE and PVC as shown in below table.Material Density (g/cm3) Tensile strength

(Mpa)Specific Strength

GRP 1.8 – 1.9 375 208.0Ductile iron 7.05 420 59.6M.S. Epoxy Coated

7.85 400 51.0

HDPE 0.95 35 36.8PVC 1.4 50 35.7

Page 42: Meil Profile Ppt

16) Dimension Stability GRP piping system can maintain the critical tolerances required of the most demanding structural and piping application. The materials need the most stringent material stiffness, dimensional tolerance.

17) Low Thermal Conductivity Low thermal conductivity of GRP pipe not only causes low temperature losses but also in many cases eliminates condensation or the need for additional thermal insulation.

18) Proven Viable Alternative ~ Growing Demand

Owing to the merits of the A l l Advantage GRP P ipes , make it the ultimate preferred choice over the existing pipe materials.

MEIL – An Engineering Wonder -in Forbes Asia

It is a matter of great pride for the entire MEIL group that we have been featured in the prestigious Forbes Asia Magazine dated December 14, 2009, in an article entitled “The Big Gulp” written by Megha Bahree. Our Director, Mr. B. Srinivasa Reddy, coordinated the details of the article with the magazine correspondents which focuses mainly on our Pranahita Chevella Project. An extract from the article follows."This is almost like moving a river," says P.V. Krishna Reddy, MEIL's chief executive, and ordinary pipes just aren't big enough to do the trick. As a result the company is drilling two tunnels 120 kilometers long and 10.50 m diameter. Nor are ordinary pumps good enough. ITT has specially designed pumps large enough to power this water up to 500 meters uphill. This piece, which is known as the Pranahita Chevella project, will divert water to a tributary of the Godavari across 320 kilometers. At peak of the monsoons the pumps will require juice of 3,500 megawatts, which in India can power 1.2 million homes for a year. It will irrigate 1.6 million otherwise fertile acres, mostly in small plots, which are uncultivated or good for only one crop a year, at best. En route the flow will also supply water to villages for drinking and to growing business in Hyderabad.
