Staying true to myself really paid off. What motivated you to produce your artwork? I wanted to recreate a memory from the past. I took a photo of my dad after he’d gone skydiving back in 1991 and redid it in my style of art (stippling). The photo shows another side to him. He’s not the exact same person he was nearly 30 years ago, and as his daughter it’s interesting to view him in a different perspective. Did your initial idea change during the art making process? I initially wanted to use the skydiving photo and manipulate it to look like my dad now. After many photos of him posing and me trying to redraw it to fit the picture it just wasn’t working for me, so instead I kept the original photo and made it almost life size. If you were to choose one artist that had the greatest influence on your piece, who would it be and why? My great grandmother was an artist and she worked with me a lot throughout my childhood. She painted portraits of people in our family and I suppose that rubbed off on me. I feel like portraits are quite personal, you basically examine every detail of them, and my style allows me to do that. How did you decide on your choice of materials? When stippling, I’ve always used a permanent marker and an inky pen. I tried so many different types to make sure they wouldn’t bleed on the paper or smudge easily, and after a while I found the ones that worked best. I have also always used Arches paper because it’s sturdy and holds the ink well. What advice would you give future Art students who are keen to exhibit their work in shows like Pulse Perspectives? What advice do you have for teachers? From a really young age I wanted to be in this exhibition, but when it came to Year 12, I really didn’t feel like my art would make the cut. I stayed with what I knew I could do well, not what I thought would do well in the selection process. Staying true to myself really paid off. My teachers encouraged me to do my best and to push the boundaries. It’s really important, I feel, to take other people’s opinions on board and try new things, otherwise you might not discover what you’re really good at. MEET THE ARTISTSarah Manning

Why is art and creativity important at times of uncertainty and change

I believe that what you create in art is a reflection of you personally so at times of change itrsquos important to stay true to yourself so I feel like art and creativity in general are really good ways of grounding yourself Itrsquos also relaxing and a good way to calm down after being stressed

In what ways do you think art influences how you feel about yourself and how you connect to others

Art brings people together in many ways and when you express yourself you let emotions out onto your canvas People can really relate to some artworks and connect giving people common ground to communicate

What career path are you embarking on and has The Arts impacted your choice

Irsquom currently at university studying a Bachelor of Criminology but that hasnrsquot stopped me from doing art I still create pieces for myself and commissions for others which is a really good way for me to give myself a break from my normal work

What do you feel young people need from AGWA at this time of rapid change while galleries are physically closed

I think people just need the encouragement to continue to do art during this time Even by making more artworks available online to offer inspiration to others

ABOUT THE ARTS

Art brings people together in many ways and when you

express yourself you let emotions out onto your canvas

Is there a song book memory feeling artist or state of mind that inspires your practice that might support other artists to create at home

To get myself into the state of mind to create art I always listen to a podcast They go for a long time and allow me to concentrate for that amount of time Just by listening and focusing gets me into the mental state where I am able to sit down for hours and create

A daughterrsquos perception Marker and ink pen on paper

The way we perceive others is built upon over time with its foundations stemming from our youth

Enlarging this captured memory of my father Irsquove aimed to create a piece that shows the man he was and is

I used stippling so that I could incorporate the graininess of the original image indicating its age but keep the detail and authenticity of the moment

Representing my father this way allows me to speak the truth of my affection for him in an unconventional but personal way
