Over the past decade, Lt. Jeff Wagner has become a corner-stone of the Medford Police forceand has dedicated his life to en-suring the safety of the townshipand its schools.

He has been such a corner-stone that Medford TownshipPublic Schools SuperintendentJoseph Del Rossi and the Board of Education felt it would be fittingto present Wagner with a certifi-cate of their appreciation at thelast Board of Education meeting.

“School safety and security is aNo. 1 priority here in Medford. We take pride in it, and a lot of that leadership and direction hascome from Jeff working with usas a team,” Del Rossi said.

Wagner began with the Med-ford Police Department as thecommunication officer in 1990and became a police officer in1992.

    “Jeff was a consummate pro-

fessional andwas alwayswilling to doanything thatwas asked of him,” PoliceChief RichardMeder said.“He alwaysput the best in-terest of thetownshipfirst.”

He also served as a school re-source officer, detective and latersupervised those units, workingintimately with all schools.

His position as the townshipemergency management coordi-nator also lent itself to workingclosely with school officials, giv-ing countless special presenta-tions on drug and alcohol resist-ance to the students over theyears.

The Pinelands Garden Club of Medfordannounced that the Butterfly Garden andPreserve, approved for installation in Cran-berry Park earlier this year by the MedfordTownship Council, will be ready to presentto the public in early June. On Saturday,June 6, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the newly in-stalled Butterfly Garden and Preserve willbe the site for a "Garden Party" completewith a celebration.

This family friendly, free event will fea-ture live music by South Jersey AcousticRoots Music Society, story telling by Diane

Horner, a boutique of handcrafted items, face painting, native plant sale and educa-tional displays by Pollination Station andMansions Monarchs. Importantly, all visi-tors will have an opportunity to visit theeducational community garden that was

made possible by the work of PinelandsGarden Club of Medford in partnershipwith many generous community business-es and volunteers.

Visitors to this event will have a chanceto meet and thank community friends suchas Eric Neugent of Neugent Constructionand Mike and Paul Villano of Villano &Sons Concrete who, one after the other, ex-cavated the site and then installed a beauti-ful sweeping hand-stamped stained con-crete walkway that was designed by Court-ney Longnecker.

This multi-thousand dollar installationwas fully donated by these local businesspeople.

A garden art piece was also donated byRefined on Main, and Full Circle Wood-works donated a custom bench handcraft-

ed from recycled wood. Time, energy andexpertise were also freely shared by Boyand Girl Scout troops in Medford alongwith their leaders and families. TheHOMERS (handsome older men enjoyingretirement), well known in Medford fortheir many acts of community service, in-stalled the perimeter fence.

A second celebration will be offered onMonday, July 20, at high noon when DebStrong of Mansions Monarchs in MedfordLakes releases 75 butterflies she will haveraised and "wrangled " from larvae found

locally. Visitors are invited to bring a picniclunch or snacks, chairs, or blankets for this"launch-eon" and take time to enjoy thegarden in its peak months and then take aleisurely stroll down Main Street to enjoyall the new sights.

    There aren’t too many times

    when you’ll read a pro-govern-

    ment-restriction opinion in

this space. As you can probably tell by

    our previous diatribes, we mostly

stand for free enterprise without re-

    strictions.

But today, we are in a nutty mood. We’re all for keeping government re-

strictions in place, at least at the gas

    pump.

Last week, state legislators put a

swift halt to a potential proposal to lift

    New Jersey’s gas-pumping restric-

tions and allow drivers to pump their

own gas at the station, and we like

what our elected officials have done in

    this case –for once.

New Jersey has banned self service

at gas stations for almost 70 years, and

we see no reason to change that now.

Sure, as many people have argued, having attendants pump our gas for us

is in New Jersey culture. It’s part of

who we are –spoiled people who don’t

have to brave the heat, the cold, the

rain, the wind or the snow to re-fill our

    gas-guzzling automobiles.

Sure, it’s nice to have a gas atten-

dant pump our gas and provide an

extra level of security when we need

to fill up on a not-so-crowded road at 4

in the morning when we’re avoiding

Shore traffic on a holiday weekend.

But the biggest reason we believe

New Jersey shouldn’t lift the restric-

tions on pumping gas is because it

would cost a lot of people a job.

There are thousands of people in

New Jersey who have a job pumping

gas. Even if it’s not a high-paying job,

it still provides necessary income for

those workers. Lift the ban, and thesepeople will instantly be out of a job.

    If allowing self-service gas pumping

    would significantly reduce prices at

the pump, then our stance might be

different. But estimates say the switch

would only save a few cents per gallon,

which means the real winners would

be the gas station owners – not the

    drivers.

So thumbs up to the recent decision

to not lift the government restriction.

It might be the last time you read

    those words in this space.

    in our opinion

Stay in your car!Put down the gas pump: Legislators say no to self-service at gas stations

    Your thoughts

What do you think about New Jersey’sban on self-service gas stations? Shareyour thoughts on this, and other topics, through a letter to the editor.
