It’s no secret that health insurance

    is expensive. Thanks to Oba-

    macare, health insurance is more

obtainable for Americans, but for most

of us, the cost of health insurance –

    especially through employer-spon-

sored plans – continues to rise.

There’s nothing that we, or our em-ployers, can do about it, unfortunately.

Now that we are required to have

health insurance, we can’t just say,

“screw it, I’ll take a chance and have

no insurance.” We are required to pay

up...and up and up and up.

So what can we do? What is in our

    control? The obvious answer: Our

    health.

The healthier we are, the less likely

we will need to use our health insur-

ance. And the less we need to use our

health insurance, the more likely the

cost of our health insurance will go

down in the future.Take a look at your health insur-

ance plan, and at others that those

around you have. Most likely, there are

incentives for living a healthy lifestyle.

Join a gym, go three times a week, and

you get a discount on said gym mem-

    bership. Why? Because the healthier

we are, the less it costs to insure us.

    Getting healthier starts at home,

with the food we eat. And the food that

is available for us to eat is getting bet-

    ter all around us.

A great place to start for healthier

options is a local farmers market.

    They’re popping up everywhere, if

    you haven’t noticed.

    There are farm markets every-

where, and there are also countless

farm stands and farmers market spe-

cial events that take place from spring

    through fall.

Never been to a farmers market? It’sworth the trip. Not only can you buy

fresh, local produce that is often

    cheaper than the supermarkets, you

can also get great ideas and lessons on

how to use the products you buy.

In addition to learning more about a

    healthy lifestyle, and purchasing

goods that can help you do so, visiting

a local farmers market is also a nice

    change-of-pace for the summer.

So get up, go out and support local

farmers and stores by visiting your

local farmers market. It will be well

worth the trip, now and in the future.

    in our opinion

Want cheaper health insurance?Get healthy – and start at a  local farmers market

Medford residents will be pay-ing a little bit more on their re-gional school tax bill this year.

The Lenape Regional HighSchool District Board of Educa-tion unanimously approved thedistrict's 2015-16 school year budg-et at last week's meeting.

    The budget includes an in-

crease of $98.50 for a Medford res-ident with the average assessedhome of $327,915. The regionalschool tax rate increased 3.34cents per $100 of assessed value.

The total budget is $154.06 mil-lion, an increase of 1.4 percentfrom last year. Most of the budgetis funded with taxpayer money, with $114.36 million expected tocome from taxpayers in the dis-trict's eight municipalities.

Due to individual educationplans of incoming ninth graders, there will be 21 special educationpositions added, eight of whichwill be teachers and 13 will besupport staff. There will also befive bus drivers added.

Since 2010, there has been a re-duction of 42 regular educationteaching staff and an increase of 49 special education staff. Thisbudget will bring that total in-crease of special education staff

to 70 since 2010.The 21 new special educationstaff members will add $1.2 mil-lion to the budget, while the fivenew bus drivers added $177,432.Health benefits increased by 8.2percent, resulting in a $501,764 in-crease.

Once again, state aid stayedflat, showing no increase in the$29.04 million.

“There you go folks, why do

our costs keep going up? The stateof New Jersey is again giving usa great increase of zero dollars,”David Stow, president of theLenape Regional Board of Educa-tion, said. “With everything elsethat we are trying to accomplish, with all the accolades that ourstaff/administration achieve, forthe things that we try to do tokeep costs down, the state givesus nothing for helping us in thecoming year, so we have to do it

all on our own.”District officials will hold theirnext Board of Education meetingon Wednesday, May 13 at the dis-trict administration building inShamong at 7:30 p.m.

Residents will see an increasein regional high school tax bill

about this year’s event is its moveto Flying W Airport on Foster-town Road in Medford.

    Jeanne Gural, Cedar Run’s ex-

    ecutive director, says, “After 13

years at the Wildlife Refuge, thisevent has grown to the point of needing a larger venue. The Fly-ing W, one of our major eventsponsors, will offer our ticketholders more room to sip, munch, mingle and bid on our wonderfulauction items plus the facility hasindoor and outdoor facilities tokeep us dry if the weather turnswet.”

Cedar Run Wildlife Refugeserves more than 4,000 injured

and abandoned animals annuallyat their rehabilitation hospital;and each year, the refuge’s educa-tion team introduces 40,000 chil-dren and adults to the importanceof protecting wildlife and thehabitats they need.

This fundraiser will help keepthe hospital’s doors open and sup-port Cedar Run’s education pro-grams.

Several of Cedar Run’s Wildlifeambassadors will be in atten-dance at the event so that every-

one can personally experience amajor part of why Cedar RunWildlife Refuge exists.

    foundation’s Grant Program De-scription.

In the past, this money hasgone toward leveled readingbooks to help children improvetheir reading skills based on whatlevel they are starting at.

Wifi-enabled laptop carts werealso a central focus in the past,

further permitting the district tohave as much access to technolo-gy as possible.

The grant program was devel-oped to support teachers who en-courage creativity in the class-room for the benefit of Medford’sK-8 students.

“We specifically recognize cre-ativity and support it in the class-room for teachers who go beyondthe budget that is given to themthrough the board,” Gibney said.

    The Medford Education Foun-

dation was started in 2004 by agroup of parents and small busi-ness owners who saw there was aneed in the district for access totechnology that was not other-wise provided for in the schoolbudget.

It has raised nearly $600,000 tobenefit the Medford TownshipPublic Schools since it got started

just more than a decade ago.The golf outing has been a cor-

nerstone of the foundation’s orga-nizational schedule ever sincethis time.

It has since added the Basket-ball Throwdown in October, theDineout for Education in Febru-ary, the Family Pool Party andBBQ in June, and the Pond andGarden Tour in July in which itsplits the proceeds with the Eve-sham Education Foundation.

“Only having 14 people on theboard and five different eventscan be difficult, but we divvythem up evenly amongst the

members, and all members lend ahand in the planning and execut-ing of each event,” Gibney said.

Gibney has been the presidentof the foundation since its thirdyear of existence.

    “Putting together a successful

event of this magnitude takestime, effort and attention to de-tail. Luckily, the foundation isconstructed of a great group of people who are focused on onegoal, and having this group be-hind you makes it easy,” Gibneysaid. “Plus, we have the full sup-port of the schools, community, teachers and the businesses inthe area.”

The Medford Village CountryClub has played host to this event

every time it has been held.“The participants really enjoygoing to a great club each year,”Gibney said. “It is a lovely loca-tion, and the catering and profes-sional golf staff is extremelyhelpful every year, playing a largerole in the overall success of theevent.”

The day will begin with a BBQ lunch at noon followed by a 1 p.m.shotgun start. After a great day

on the links, golfers will be able to

relax and enjoy cocktails begin-ning at 5 p.m. Concluding thenight will be dinner and anawards ceremony from 6 to 8 p.m.

For those who are a bit moreadvanced at the sport or at beinglucky, a $50,000 prize is availablefor a hole-in-one on the 194-yardfourth hole.

“Seeing a diverse group of peo-ple come together and participatein an event knowing that their ef-forts and contributions will sup-

port the schools makes themonths of preparation worth-while, and we look forward togrowing the event and the successthat it will bring for years tocome,” Gibney said.

    14 THE MEDFORD SUN — MAY 6–12, 2015

cancer during her senior year.Kernan passed away at the age of 19 last summer.

It has been more than ninemonths since Kernan’s passing, but Farley and the Shawnee girls’lacrosse team has kept her memo-ry very much alive.

Last Thursday, Shawnee heldits inaugural Score Against Can-cer game in honor of Kernan. The team sold t-shirts to raisemoney for Children’s Hospital of

    Philadelphia.About 600 shirts were solid,

raising about $6,000.Kernan’s memory hasn’t just

been honored at one game thisseason. Farley has carried on Ker-

nan’s legacy every time she stepson the field.

This year, Farley was the firstperson since Kernan to wear No.22 for Shawnee girls’ lacrosse.Farley was selected to wear thenumber prior to the start of theseason.

Head coach Aimee Seward saidthe team wanted to do somethingrevolving around Kernan’s for-mer No. 22 jersey, but they didn’twant to retire it.

“We decided instead on passingdown her number andmaking that an honor,” Sewardsaid.

For the selection, each senioron the team would write an essay

nominating a teammate who theythought had characteristics bestresembling Kernan. The coach-ing staff read through the essaysand made their selection based onthem.

Seward described Kernan as astrong team player who had agood heart and displayedcourage. Those were the key fac-tors the coaching staff was look-ing for when making their selec-tion.

“When we looked to pass it on,we were looking for a player (whowas) not only skilled, but exem-plified the teamwork,” Sewardsaid.

Seward felt the team had anumber of players who wouldhave been worthy of carrying onKernan’s legacy. However, shesaid Farley’s impact on the teamand leadership skills made herthe perfect fit.

“You can see her athleticismand her love for lacrosse,” Sewardsaid. “But I think some of theother things are how she workswith her teammates and how shemakes the players on her team

better.”Farley had also been one of the

current players who knew Ker-nan best, having been one of herbest friends. Even so, Farley wassurprised to be selected.

“I didn’t expect it,” Farley said.“I did use to be best friends withKatie Kernan so I thought theremight be a chance. Some of myfriends did tell me they were writ-ing about me.”

Farley immediately embracedthe idea and dove into the 2015season with an extra sense of mo-tivation. Her hard work has paidoff on the score sheet, as she hasscored three goals in all but onegame this season and has had two

    games where she’s registereddouble-digit points.

“It meant the world to me wear-ing her number and representingher on the field,” she said. “I’m sohonored to wear it and be part

of it the first year that it hap-pened.”

Prior to last Thursday’s ScoreAgainst Cancer game, all theShawnee players wore the t-shirtsduring warm-ups. Just before thegame, Farley gathered her teamto make sure they knew how im-portant the game was.

“I told everyone in the warm-up, this game’s for her,” Farleysaid. “Everyone has to play theirbest for her.”

Farley was a major force forthe Renegades, scoring five goalsand adding four assists in thegame. Each time Farley scored, the writing on her stick becamevisible as the ball came out. Be-

tween the initials on her stick andthe number on her back, Farleyfeels like Kernan has been a bigpart of Shawnee’s season.

“I’ve played every game forher,” Farley said.

    TEAMMATESContinued from page 1

    MIKE MONOSTRA/The Sun

Clockwise from above: This season,Caroline Farley is wearing No. 22 inhonor of her former teammate KatieKernan, an accomplished Renegades de-fender who passed away from brain can-cer last summer. Shawnee hosted aScore Against Cancer game in honor ofKernan last Thursday. Samantha Tuccilooks to set up a play for Shawnee dur-ing the first half of last week’s 15-6 winover Kingsway.
