“Everyone Matters”

Becoming One...

Dear Friends,

What will we be: three congregations meeting under one roof or one congregation

with three different worship opportunities? I choose the later. Every Sunday I am the cel-

ebrant at all three services. Each service has its own identity and each service has its own

integrity, but my rationale for celebrating three Eucharists on Sunday is not choice, but

opportunity. As a disciple of Jesus, it is our spiritual duty to be present at the celebration

of the Eucharist every Sunday. I celebrate three Eucharists in order to provide an oppor-

tunity for every member of the parish to fulfill his or her spiritual obligation to God. At

Trinity Church we are blessed to have three different Sunday worship opportunities. It is a

luxury few parishes our size enjoy.

The downside to three services is the loss of congregational unity and identity. As

your pastor, it is my responsibility to guard the bond of unity in the parish so that we

might be one. Being one does not mean monolithic uniformity, but it does mean that we

are united for a common purpose. Our common purpose as the parish of Trinity Church is

to offer our praise and thanksgiving to the living God who has made himself known in Je-

sus Christ and to serve the world in his name. Authentic worship transcends personal

preference and convenience.

This summer we will have the opportunity to celebrate the bonds of our mutual

affection as we gather for worship as the one parish family of Trinity Church. For the

months of June, July and August, we will have one worship service on Sunday at

10:00AM.

What better way to celebrate “Becoming One” than with the bishop’s visitation

and confirmation on Sunday, June 1st at 10:00AM? On Sunday, September 7th , we will

return to three services at 8:00AM, 10:00AM, and 6:00PM.

Faithfully,

Fr. Pat

For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though

many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one

body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

Christian Formation & Enrichment For everyone, for every age!

Trinity Café Semester to end with

SPRING FLING on May 7th!

Our Cafe spring semester will end on Wednesday, May 7th with a celebration for every-one. There will be dancing, games and awards. Please come and enjoy the community of Trinity,

even if you have been unable to attend Cafe this spring. Wear fancy dress if you want, or just your “bling.” We will “party” from 5:30 until 7:00 p.m.

We are proud of our spring semester. As directed by the Vestry, we have concentrated on greater reli-gious knowledge for all ages. Our Adult Class has been led by Father Pat and Diana Connell as well as EFM Grads Wendy Wells and Vicki Meacham. What a joy to see 15 to 50 adults studying, discussing and searching God’s word for biblical truth. A particularly well attended and appreciated presentation was made by Kit Gallagher, talking about brass etchings, such as the one she has given to Trinity, proudly displayed in the Parish Hall.

The children have been led by Lori Schneider or Laura Muhlenberg. They have made crafts and learned about God’s love, all while having a lot of fun. (Ask one of them about their puppet shows or painting with their feet).

Led by Juanita Sprague, our youth have studied “Not a Fan” via a video series. Joined by a few “young at heart” adults, they have explored what it is to be a follower of Jesus, not just a fan. This small, but mighty, group has grown in their faith walk. What a blessing!

The warm community of Trinity is never more clearly visible than at the 5:30 Cafe meal. With the dona-tions of soups and desserts adding to the inevitable pizza and hotdogs, our members share their lives, faith and demonstrate their dedication to learning more about God’s word and our church. Devona Stuerzenberger and Debra Barany have been so faithful in coordinating our Cafe meal. And God bless Carolyn Anderson, who is al-ways willing to don rubber gloves and help clean up the dishes.

As Trinity Cafe comes to an end for the summer, please remember that we will reopen this fall on Septem-ber 10th and plans will be made soon for the fall semester curriculum. If you wish to help with Cafe , either on the planning committee or with our cafe meal, just let Janet Estes know.

Thank you to all who work to make Trinity Café such a staple of Christian enrichment in our Parish!

Becoming One… with weekend VBS for everyone!

The Christian Education Committee has decided to look at VBS a bit differently this summer. We will be providing an opportunity for all ages to participate in “Weekend Wilderness Escape,” studying significant biblical stories from the life of Moses.

There will be lessons, songs and crafts for all children and lessons for all adults. To enable our families to attend this new enrichment time together, we will begin on Friday, July 11th, with a meal at 5:30, followed by les-sons and fun. We will then meet on Saturday, July 12th at 9:00 a.m. for breakfast, ending in the mid-afternoon.

We are now in the planning phase for “Weekend Wilderness Experience” and Father Pat will be convening an organizational meeting with lunch on Sunday, May 25th, following the 10:15 service. If you are creative and love to have fun, please consider joining this group.

What: VBS for everyone

When: Friday evening, July 10th & July 11th, Saturday morning and afternoon Who: All ages!

Why: To learn more about God’s love and to grow together as the community of Trinity

Thank you to all who hosted and/or led a Lenten Study Book group. We estimate that between 35 to 40 parishioners dedicated study time during Lent to grow in their faith.

Looking ahead, if you come across a book that would be appropriate for our 2015 Lenten Books Study, please share with Irene Alexander or Father Pat. We are always looking for meaningful ways to enrich our Lenten experience.

Our Just Faith and Education for Ministry (EfM) groups have been meeting weekly since last fall. Participants have

been growing in their faith, knowledge and commit-ment. After a summer break, classes will resume in the fall. Please consider joining one of these enrichment opportunities. Questions? Talk to Donna Wilson or Juanita Sprague or any participant.

The Business of the Parish The Vestry met on April 15th. Highlights:

Our finances continue to be on track through March, with 24.55% of our budgeted income realized. Expenses are at 23.88% of budget. We usually run a bit short in the first quarter, so this is a very positive indication of the faithfulness of our congregation. THANK YOU!

Father Pat’s decision is to have only one service only during the summer at 10:00 a.m. When we return to 3 services in the fall, they will be at 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Vice Jr. Warden, Ryan Lloyd is researching our Fire Alarm system, comparing costs and benefits.

The HR committee has hired a Nursery Worker who started on Palm Sunday. She will have a 3 month proba-tionary period.

The Vestry is considering placing a Trellis at the Office Door entrance.

The Church Directory has been completed and distributed. The plan is to update and republished every 8-9 months.

The “Spring Forward” for Outreach campaign has already collected more than $5,000, with more to come from pledges. (Total gifts and pledges will be around $10,000)

Our visitation ministries are going very well—truly expressing the “face of Christ” to our sick and home-bound.

Please remember that the monthly financial reports and Vestry minutes are posted on the bulletin board outside the office. Also, please feel free to ask any Vestry member about any issue of the parish.

Your Vestry and their areas of responsibilities:

Ted Bowne Sr. Warden and Fellowship/Hospitality Mike Stuerzenberger Jr. Warden Amy Beck Secretary Ralph Barany Treasurer Walker Meacham Chaplain Isaac Obermann Audit & Finance Irene Alexander Christian Formation & Enrichment Barb Tipmore Pastoral Care Janet Estes Communications Wendy Wells Visitation to the Sick Ryan Lloyd Vice Jr. Warden Lori Schneider Member Development Wayne Naylor Human Resources

2014 Goals (to-date progress in italics):

1. Develop and follow a Prayer List Disclosure Policy to be used for bulletins, e-mails (and other communica-tion), Pastoral Care and Member Development Functional Areas. (This goal is in progress. We are asking Mi-chael Vollman to assist in developing this policy, as his medical experience as well as his knowledge of Trinity give him a unique perspective).

2. Create a Buildings and Grounds Committee to augment & relieve time and efforts of Jr. Warden and Vice Jr. Warden. (Several parishioners have agreed to serve on this committee. Laura Muhlenberg is to assist in setting up the initial meeting and getting this group off the ground.)

3. Recruit and train someone to provide assistance/coverage for treasurer, Ralph Barany (Treasurer-in-waiting).

4. Make Christian Formation and Enhancement (Education) a priority for Trinity. (Trinity Café dedicated clas-ses to Biblical enrichment; VBS will be on a weekend and for everyone this summer, concentrating on parts of Moses’ life).

5. To begin discussions on the implementation of “The Witnessing and Blessing of a Life Long Covenant” at Trinity Church. This rite was authorized and given approval by the General Convention of the Episcopal Church in 2012 for same gendered couples in life-long committed relationships. (Father Pat has researched various study materials and is putting together a committee to fulfill this goal.)

6. Fully implement Shepherding Program. (Lori Schneider has recruited 15 Shepherds who are shepherding 180 members, on track to meet our 2014 goal of everyone being shepherded.)

7. Get Website fully functional. (Lynette Lydanne is working hard to revise our website. Look for big changes this summer.)

8. Solve issues around food coordination for various ministries: Pastoral Care, Trinity Cafe , bereavement, etc. (Laura Muhlenberg has organized this ministry to assist in many functional areas—seems to be working very well.)

9. Create Worship Committee to address and identify issues/ideas. (Father Pat is still contemplating this initia-tive.)

10. Evaluate efficacy of all three Eucharistic services.

An organizational chart is posted on the bulletin board

in the hallway. Please be patient as we attempt to

capture all volunteer roles to be as comprehensive as possible; the chart will be

updated often.

Becoming One...at

10:00 AM!

Remember to mark your calendar for Sunday,

June 1st when we begin our summer service schedule. Each Sunday, until Labor Day, we will have one service only at 10:00 a.m.

There are a number of benefits for this change, but the most important is that our members can wor-ship together and get to know each other. Also, the 10:00 hour will allow time for one longer coffee hour after the service and still have time to beat the crowds to your favorite restaurant! Seriously, we are looking forward to truly “becoming one” this summer.

After Labor Day we will return to three services each Sunday—8:00 AM, 10:00AM and 6:00 PM.

“Spring Forward” for Outreach

Our first ever “Spring Forward” for Outreach campaign was an outstanding success. To date, almost $10,000 in donations and/or commitments have been added to the funds available to support ministries in our community. The Outreach Committee thanks all those that have joined them in their passion with financial support.

As well as our “treasure,” outreach also wishes to encourage members to donate “time and talent.” There are volunteer opportunities in many of the ministries we support. Please consider how you can help. Just talk to any of the outreach committee members below to get started. CATCH THE PASSION!

June’s Ministry focus—the Help Office

Throughout the year, the Outreach Committee selects a specific ministry for monthly focus. June’s minis-try is the Help office. From their website owensborohelpoffice.org:

The Help Office of Owensboro, Inc. is a Christian agency begun by a group of churches, laymen and clergymen from different denominations in 1972. Its mission is to provide basic human physiological and emergency assistance to the poor and to prevent duplication of services. They are the “Clearing House” for all churches in serving the poor.

To meet these needs, the Help Office has an Executive Director who supervises a staff of over 100 unpaid volunteers. Volunteers interview clients to help determine their specific needs. A referral may be made to an-other agency or assistance given directly through the Help Office. Funding for this office has been made possi-ble through the generous donations of individuals, businesses, organizations and churches throughout Owens-boro. No Government Funds or United Way Funds are used or solicited.

The Help Office serves Daviess County families in need of emergency services—local contributions serv-ing local families. Each year they help local families… serving over 14,000 last year.

Mary Jane Buster is Trinity’s contact with this ministry. Look for a soon-to-be designated Sunday in June where the congregation will be asked to bring in donated items for the Help Office. Also, the Help Office is al-ways in need of volunteers. Check out their website and talk to Mary Jane. What a beautiful way to follow Jesus’ command to “feed my sheep” (John 21:17).

Thank you!

During Holy Week and Easter, Trinity had many truly meaningful worship services. We commemorate and celebrate the passion and resurrection of Christ with reverence and intent. Along with our Rector and staff, it takes many volunteers to make these services special. We are blessed with choir members, readers, Vergers, greeters, Altar Guild, Eucharistic Ministers, children teachers, Hospitality Guild, decorators and those that planned the Easter Egg Hunt. Many hands and hard work.

It would be impossible to list everyone individ-ually who played such an important role. But, please know how much you and your efforts are appreciated. And a special thank you to those that recruit and guide others in their ministries.

THANK YOU all for adding to OUR Easter joy!

Pentecost & Trinity Sunday Celebrations in June

We have many special Sundays coming in June. Along with moving to just one service at 10:00 and Confirmation, there are two important Sundays liturgi-cally.

Sunday, June 8th, is Pentecost, where we celebrate the birth of the church. The promised Ad-vocate (Holy Spirit) comes and those who cowered in fear now burst forth from their prison with a message that can be understood in any language. At Trinity, we ask all to wear red, symbolizing the flame of the Holy Spirit.

June 15th is Trinity Sunday. Always the Sunday after Pentecost, Trinity Sunday is one of seven principal feast days in the Episcopal Church. On this Sunday, we celebrates the Christian doctrine of the Trinity, the three Persons of God—the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. At our parish, we commemorate the feast and our name with a Family Service and Pot-luck Parish Luncheon.

Confirmation set for June 1st

Bishop White will join us on June 1st for confir-mation. We have several parishioners that have been meeting with Father Pat in preparation for this special Sunday. Please make a special effort to attend and support our newest confirmands.

Sunday, June 1st

10:00 a.m. Service

Reception to follow

(We will postpone our usual potluck parish meal and

family service until Trinity Sunday.)

What is Confirmation?

Confirmation, as defined in The Book of Com-mon Prayer is "a mature public affirmation of faith and commitment to the responsibilities of Baptism." At

Confirmation, individuals receive the laying on of hands by the bishop, thereby affirming their own faith and visibly connecting to the broader Body of Christ.
