Welcome

“Forsan et haec olim meminisse iuvabit”“Perhaps someday you will remember this fondly…”

Virgil (The Aeneid, Book I. 203)

On behalf of the Committee, to whom we owe an infinite debt of thanks for this evening’s event, it is our pleasure to welcome you to the 146th First and Third Trinity Boat Club May Ball.

Trinity has set two noteworthy precedents in 2011, both of which Ben and Nick have pioneered and are very proud. Following the fantastic success of his flame-effects last year, Ben has managed to sur-pass his own efforts in orchestrating the spectacu-lar fountains display in the river Cam which will introduce the fireworks at 10:35pm and continue right up until 6am. Back in November, Nick set up the May Ball Presidents’ Committee which ini-tiated and coordinated the charitable efforts of all the College May Balls. He has high hopes that the May Balls will soon be raising up to £50,000 per annum for local charities. East Anglia Children’s Hospice was chosen by the May Ball Presidents as the primary recipient for 2011.

In the words of Stendhal, pleasure is ‘often spoiled by describing it’, so without further ado we hope that the following programme proves sufficiently tantalising before you celebrate one of the most stylish and coveted events on the Cambridge cal-endar.

As soon as our wonderful fireworks finish, make sure you experience the bewitching setup in our Great Hall. Before “the iron tongue of midnight hath told twelve,” you will be able to dance the hour away to extracts from the world’s most magi-cal ballets, The Nutcracker and Swan Lake.

Conducted by Harry Ogg, the Cambridge Mo-zart Ensemble will play a selection of waltzes and quicksteps.

As if in a fairytale, our enchanted ball will end at the witching hour of midnight, upon which mo-ment Midsummer will truly begin.

Or was it all just a dream?

Marguet Cuvée Réserve Grand Cru

Founded in c. 1875, the house of Marguet has small but highly impressive vineyard holdings in the very best Premier Cru and Grand Cru zones of Champagne. The eccentric Benoit Marguet at the helm favours a portion of barrel-fermentation, some batonnage, careful racking rather than fil-tration, extended bottle ageing and a generally at-one-with-nature approach.

Cuvée Réserve Grand Cru has a 50/50 Pinot Noir-Chardonnay split with all the grapes com-ing from first rate Grand Cru sites, blended from 2004 and 2005 (both vintage years).
