Principal Notes
Greetings Churchill Families, The end of the school year is fast approaching! As we reflect on the school year, we are
grateful for the strong partnerships and commitments that we have shared with all of you to
strengthen your child’s learning experiences and social emotional growth. We would like to
especially thank our Home and School Association and Executive Board Members, Dana
Lepkowski, Colleen Zukauskas, Rachel Keys, Susan Hofmann, and Karla Jaeckel, for their
unending support and countless volunteer hours shared with us throughout this school year. We
look forward to the many celebrations and recognitions that will take place soon.
Congratulations to Mrs. Sarah Saldana, 5th Grade Teacher, and her family on the birth of
their baby boy, Lennon James Saldana, on March 24, 2016! Congratulations to Mrs. Anne
Hellmuth, 2nd Grade Teacher, and her family on the birth of their baby girl, Kinzie Grace Hellmuth,
on April 1, 2016!
The Churchill Staff List for the 2016-2017 school year is enclosed in this edition of the
Churchill Chatter. Please review for the changes in staff as they currently stand, for the coming
school year. We wish Mrs. Cari Miller good luck in her future teaching career and welcome Mrs.
Megan Gentzler back as she will be returning from a year-long maternity leave. There are some
shifts that are necessary due to our current student population.
Staff Appreciation Week is the week of May 2nd! Please encourage your child to bring in a
special note for his or her teacher(s) and staff during this week. Be sure to thank your teachers for
all their hard work and commitment to our school.
During the month of May, we celebrate all 6 Character Counts! pillars: Trustworthiness,
Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, Citizenship. All parents are invited to attend our
Character Counts! Assemblies on Monday, May 9, 2016 at 9:05 AM (Grades 3-5) and 10:20 AM
(Grades K-2). If you plan to attend, please arrange childcare for younger siblings. Thank you
for your support in promoting good character everywhere, all the time!
We appreciate your cooperation with following the Arrival and Dismissal Procedures that
are in place. Please review and adhere to the guidelines that have been established to assist us with
the safety of our students. Please also reinforce walking safely to your students who walk to and
from school each day. There are many more students taking advantage of the nicer weather and it is
important to ensure that the students stay on the sidewalks, remain in designated crosswalks, and are
aware of their surroundings.
Thank you so much for supporting our school when patronizing local businesses!
Churchill’s Culver’s Night generated $119.23 (February) and Churchill’s Rosati’s Nights generated
$29.65 (February) and $29.73 (March) for our school.
On behalf of the Churchill Staff, we look forward to the many exciting events that will
occur as the school year comes to a close. Be sure to review the enclosed calendar! We hope you
have a restful, enjoyable summer. We look forward to hearing about all of your summer adventures
and wish our 5th graders good luck as they enter junior high in the fall.
Sincerely,

CHARACTER COUNTS!sm
CHARACTER COUNTS! Every day at Churchill School!!
During the month of May, we celebrate all 6 Character Counts! pillars: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility,
Fairness, Caring, Citizenship. All parents are invited to attend our Character Counts! Assemblies on Monday, May 9, 2016 at
9:05 AM (Grades 3-5) and 10:20 AM (Grades K-2). If you plan to attend, please arrange childcare for younger siblings.
Thank you for your support in promoting good character everywhere, all the time!
Nurse’s Notes I would like to extend a hearfelt “Thank You!” to parents who were able to help out this school year with Vision and Hearing
Screenings, our Athena Dental van visit, made clothing donations, or simply extended a “Thank you” to the Nurses office.
Without the help of parents, it would be difficult for the nurse’s office so run so efficiently. A special Thanks to our Home &
School Association for their generous donation to the nurses office at the beginning of the school year. It has allowed me to do a
little extra for the amazing students here at Churchill!
There remain a couple important dates as we head toward the end of the school year.
Required Dental exams for Kindergarten & 2nd grade: The state of Illinois requires Dental exams to be on file with the school in
order to show compliance for your student. Your student’s exam should have been between November 15, 2014, through the due
date of May 15, 2016. If you have not turned one in, please do so or make an appointment with your dental provider today!
Reminder for 5th grade parents: Students entering 6th grade are required to have a 6th grade physical, including a Meningicoccal,
and Tdap immunization, as well as a required dental exam. Get a jump on your summer “To-Do” list by making those
appointments early! *If you have already done so, feel free to send in your physical/dental exams now and I will be more than
happy to enter the information, prior to the next school year.
End of Year Medication pick up: Please pick up your child’s unused medications by the last day of school, Friday, May 20,
2016. If you are unable to pick up your medications by 5/20/16, please contact the Main Office during the week of May 23-27 to
schedule a pick up, as office hours may vary. Any medications not picked up, or expired, will be disposed of. Please remember,
students may not transport medications to and from school. REMINDER: Medication Authorization Forms are only valid for the school year in which they are received. Forms for the 2016-
2017 school year are available on the District website. Have in mind a form is required for each medication to be administered to
your student. Don’t forget your child’s Asthma Action Plans and/or Food Allergy Action Plans!!
MEDICATION RECYCLING EVENT AT CHURCHILL !!!!! Who: Available to all District 308 families!
What: Turn in your expired or discontinued medications, inhalers, Epi Pens, “Sharps” or controlled substances for proper
disposal.
When: June 7th: 7:00-12:00 & June 8th 2:00-6:00
Where: Churchill Elementary, Nurse’s Office.
Why: According to the Illinois EPA, when medications are not disposed of properly, they can end up in ground water, lakes,
rivers and streams. It is easy for humans, and animals, to access medications thrown away in the trash, or they end up in a landfill,
which may indirectly contaminate water.
If you are unable to make this event, please check out the link below for helpful information on how to properly dispose of
medications, recycling medication and/or drop-off sites:
http://www.countyofkane.org/recycling/pages/pharmMeds.aspx
If you have any questions, feel free to call Nurse Kim, 630-636-3802, or email [email protected] Have a healthy, and safe summer. Be active, stay hydrated and remember to protect your skin…apply your sunscreen often!

“Volunteer of the Year”
Jennifer Bocik
Thank you for everything you do for
Churchill Elementary!
Mustang Gram
On behalf of the mustang gram committee, we would like to thank all of
you for your support this school year.
Mustang Gram Committee
Hello Churchill Families!
I can't believe how quickly this year has passed! Only a few more weeks left! This year has been very successful for Home and
School with many great events. We hope the students have created some great memories for the year.
We still have some events to finish out the year strong. At our next Home and School meeting, we will be voting on updated
bylaws, voting for the new Executive Board, and announcing the winners of the Kerry Anne Engdahl scholarship. We also have
Field Day and the 5th Grade Party coming up in May.
I would also like to let everyone know how thankful I am for all the volunteers who have made our events successful. A big shout
out to the rest of the Executive Board who have spent many hours to fill in the gaps and made sure all of the events have run
smoothly. Our association would not be able to provide opportunities for the students without the help of our volunteers.
Finally, we would like to congratulate our 5th graders and wish them well as they move on to middle school. We hope when you
look back on your years at Churchill, it brings a smile to your face and fills you with warm memories.
Please look out for summer mailings for important forms for Home and School for next school year. We hope to see you at our
next meeting on Tuesday, May 10th at 7:00pm! Have a great and safe summer!
Dana Lepkowski, President Churchill HSA

Colleen Zukauskas for President

Colleen’s prior experience: I have 3 years experience on the Churchill Elementary Home and School Executive Board as 2nd VP. I was also part of the Oswego Bears Cheer Board last year and have recently taken over the role of Cheer Coordinator for the 2016 Football Season. Why Colleen would like to serve on the board: I have enjoyed being part of the Churchill HSA for the last three years and hope to continue to serve the staff & students at Churchill Elementary. In my tenure, I held a successful transition from Boosterthon to our partnership with Crossfit Oswego and the Churchill Challenge. Last fall, we were fortunate to raise enough funds to provide an additional iPad in each classroom. Churchill Blue and Silver Trivia Night is in the coming weeks, and we anticipate another successful event. This event’s fundraising efforts will help us to provide the kids with more educational resources in the classroom.
Jennifer Bocik for Vice President

Hosted first Salsa Verde Night with all proceeds to Blue and Silver 2016. Why Jennifer would like to serve on the board: I’d like to bring my creative insight and passion to HSA events, while being a role model to my kids and others. I believe in building teams not empires and will strive to make Churchill HSA more successful and further enhance parent involvement in their kid’s school.

I moved to Churchill Club 5 years ago and have been an HSA member every year. During the 5 years, I have also been Chair and co-chair of the Label Redemption Committee, a Picture Presenter, volunteered to help at many HSA events, and donated items wherever needed. I was also a member of Southbury’s HSA in 2011/2012 and again in 2013/2014, and volunteered for several events. Why Rachel would like to serve on the board: The HSA is an important link between parents, teachers and school staff. I fully support the need for parents to be involved in the education of their kids. I want to continue to be one of the leaders of the group that both encourages and provides opportunities for parent involvement. As the current HSA Treasurer, I have performed my duties in a timely and efficient manner. I am excited about the opportunity to continue to bring my knowledge and experience together with my passion for enhancing the education of our Churchill families.

I have had many roles on the board as stated above and truly enjoy that we are able to assist the school with meeting their goals, as well as, provide fun activities for the students. I like to stay active within my child's school so that I can stay abreast of things going on and to help provide opportunities for the students. I would like to try a different position and assist with keeping families up to date on the activities provided by Home and School and assist with providing local media with the positive activities that our kids take part in.
Label Redemption Program Thank you for sending in your Box Tops and Labels For Education! So far, we have collected over 20,000 Box Tops. Keep
sending them in until the end of school. We don't want any to expire over the summer, so we'll do one final submission.
Unfortunately, we have been informed that the Labels For Education program will officially end July 31, 2016. Because of this,
please send in all Labels For Education labels or caps before the end of the school year so we can do a final submission.
That will allow us time to cash in all of our points for merchandise before the program ends.
Our monthly contests have ended for this school year. Mrs. Von Kaenel's class was the February winner. Ms. Miller's class
won for April. These classes had the most combined totals (Box Tops and Labels) for those months, with 979 and 631,
respectively. Congratulations to those classes! Thanks for your continued support of this fun program that allows us to earn
free money and needed items for our school!

Notes from the Music Room. . .
Wow! It’s May already. Where has the school year gone? We are
going to be very busy in the music room this month finishing up all
of our units for the year.
The third grade students will be presenting the musical, “Broadway
Beat,” on Thursday, May 5th, at 7:00 p.m. in the gym. They are
doing a great job and are very excited to share this musical with
their families and friends! You are all invited to come join the fun!
The District Choral Festival at OEHS will be held on Wednesday,
May 11th at 7:00 p.m. We have 55 students in our Honor Choir that
will be performing that evening. We will be joining the Honor
Choirs from 5 other elementary schools, as well as groups from
Plank, Murphy and Bednarcik Jr. High Schools and OEHS. You
are all invited to a great evening of music in the main gym at
OEHS!
Here’s what’s in store for music classes for the remainder of the
month of May:
First grade: Classroom Instruments and Musical Stories—We are
currently learning the names and sounds of our classroom
instruments along with the correct way to play them. When we are
finished with that, we will be introduced to some common
orchestral instruments in the story of “Peter and the Wolf.” Second grade: Multicultural music—At the end of April, we
learned some common characteristics of African music and
Chinese music. We will be studying Latin and Native American
music during the month of May.
Third grade: Musical—Students will be presenting their musical
on May 5th. During their next music class after that, they will be
watching a video of their musical and reflecting on their
performance. They will then finish the school year learning to
visually recognize the major instruments in the orchestra. Fourth grade: Recorder—The fourth graders have been doing a
great job learning to play the recorder. We are using the “Recorder
Karate” curriculum in which students play progressively more
difficult songs to pass the “belts” (white, yellow, orange, green,
purple, etc. all the way through black). They will be continuing this
until the end of the school year. Fifth grade: Commercial Applications of Music—At the end of
April, we watched some commercial videos and discussed how
music was used in them. We also discussed how the elements of
music combine to set a mood or convey a message. The culminating
project for this unit gives students the opportunity to sell a product
or promote a cause using an original jingle, a jingle using a rap or a
familiar tune, or background music with narration or a skit. Student
may work individually, with a partner, or in a group of 3 or 4.
Students working in groups will also create a visual advertisement.
These components will be combined into a “commercial” that will
be performed for their class live or via video. This is a fun project
that gives the 5th graders an opportunity to express their creativity.
This is always one of their favorite units!
Thank you all for your support of our music program here at
Churchill this year! “Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” (Red Auerbach)

Spring has sprung! Here we are again at the end of another
school year! We want to thank the kids for their hard work and
all the exciting activities they have participated in this year.
Students wrapped up the month of April with a week of
kickball. In May, the classes will practice and prepare for all of
the Field Day activities. We will wrap up the end of the year
with some of our favorite games.
Mark your calendar for our annual Field Day on Tuesday, May
17th! With the great support of our volunteers, staff, and
administration, our annual field days have been a huge success.
We would also like to thank our amazing Home and School
Association for their support of our Field Day events.
Information about online volunteer sign up and a detailed Field
Day schedule of events will be sent home shortly. Or check

From the Art Room…
Wow, how time flies when you are having fun! The 2015-2016 school year was a busy, exciting, and fun time in the Churchill Art
Room. Students learned about new drawing, painting, sculpting, and many other art creation techniques, as well as learning about
many new artists, art styles, and cultures from around the world. In the art room we also discussed many topics related to different
school subjects like science, math, and history. Students discovered that art can be found anywhere and no matter what level of artistic
skill you may have, everyone can use their creativity to create something amazing!

Oswego Students Help Give Back to Community

The students help plan and execute Character Counts! assemblies, coordinate school-wide service projects, and connect with the community in meaningful ways, such as food and clothing drives, and visits to the Autumn Leaves Memory Care facility.
