This re-establishment will ensure the students are engaging with their classroom learning and realising their potential for this semester to be ready for a full and hopefully undisturbed Semester 2. Throughout this term students and families have been managing the complexities of online learning, teachers have also been learning how to work in new and different ways. Reflecting on the past 9 weeks shows the incredible pace of change and the adaptations we have made as a school community. Think about what you were doing just those few short weeks ago and take some time to acknowledge how adaptable and flexible you have had to be. Here at school the learning for teachers has been significant. Our teaching team kept abreast of the new updates from the Department of Education and feedback from the school community. We had brainstormed, assessed, selected, discarded, modified and predicted as we tried to keep in front of what was coming next. We are fortunate to have extremely knowledgeable and skilled staff members who rose to the challenge of supporting and upskilling others. It has been very pleasing to see the positivity of the students since they have returned. The enthusiasm and happiness evident in the playground and the classrooms is an endorsement of the great learning climate we have created and maintain here at Smithfield State High School. HPE and Sport

Welcome back

As teachers, we are all very excited to seestudents return to school and recommencelearning and as HPE teachers, we are all veryactive people and found the increasedsedentary time in front of the computerdifficult. It has been great to hear that somany students have managed to stay active throughout theCOVID-19 pandemic. One thing that we have noticed is theincrease in the number of people out and exercising with friendsand family. Now more than ever our health needs to beprioritised!

Some things that we reinforce often are to be active every day(this will help you sleep and release endorphins to make youfeel happy), drink plenty of water, eat healthy and nutritiousfoods, limit screen time, protect your skin by wearing a hat andsunscreen and be sure to take time out to socialise with friendsand family.

Year 11 (2021) Subject Information

This week I attended the Year 10 SPW classes to discuss thesix HPE subjects students can pick for Year 11 and 12. With theincreased focus on health and wellbeing at the moment and theCentre of Athlete Development and Performing Arts (CADPA)building due for completion next year we are expecting anincrease in the number of students interested in HPE subjects.

Year 9 visual arts updateYear 9 visual arts students have been studying appropriation(the deliberate reworking of images and styles from earlier,well-known works of art) and landscape art this term. In the finalweeks of the term they continue to work diligently on their finalpiece –an appropriation of a famous piece of landscape art.Students have been learning about the artworks of Jeff Koons,Banksy and others who have made us question aspects ofsociety and challenge our understanding of ‘what is art?”. Thelandscape artworks of Van Goh, Monet and Edvard Munch areamong the classic pieces of art our students have chosen totake on. They now have an opportunity to make a statementand bring new meaning to an old piece.
