This Month’s HighlightsCaring for Mom and Dad Thursday, May 7 at 10pm

This program examines an unprecedented demographic shift: Some 75 million baby boomers are now entering their retirement years. Family caregivers provide 90 percent of parent care while balancing work and family—a job most cannot afford to do. Who will take care of those who can no longer care for themselves? Narrated by Meryl Streep.

Arts & the MindThursdays, May 14 and 21 at 10pm

Lisa Kudrow hosts this two-part special that reveals the crucial effect of the arts on the human brain across a lifetime. The programs show how music, dance, painting, poetry, and theater improve well-being at both ends of life, and reveal the cutting-edge science that explains the powerful effect of the arts on the brain.

GREAT PERFORMANCES: Boston Symphony Orchestra: Andris Nelsons Inaugural ConcertFriday, May 29 at 9pm

Celebrate the start of Andris Nelsons’ tenure as the 15th music director of the BSO. Kristine Opolais and Jonas Kaufmann perform selections from the Wagnerian and Italian verismo repertoires and join in a duet from Puccini’s Manon Lescaut. The concert opens with Wagner’s Tannhäuser overture and closes with Respighi’s Pines of Rome.

Nature: Animal ChildhoodWednesday, May 13 at 8pm Every animal must leave the nest and face the world alone. Some leave moments after birth with no life lessons from parents. Others are schooled by a family member. But learning to find food and avoid predators is hard. Witness the struggles of young animals around the world as they prepare to leave home.

Profiles: Orson Welles at 100Sunday, May 3, noon

In celebration of what would have been Orson Welles’ 100th birthday, this special installment of Profiles looks into the life and career of the great orator and performer. Welles’ life contains many contradictions. Was he a journalist or an entertainer? An autocrat or everyman? A patriot or ex-patriot? We explore these questions and how Welles was able to fold both sides into each other during his radio career. The hour includes voices from Indiana University’s Orson Welles’ Centennial Celebration and Symposium, readings from Welles correspondence from the Lilly Library, and an interview with Welles’ biographer Simon Callow. Produced by WFIU’s James Gray and Joshua Brewer.

Invisibilia debuts on WFIUSundays at 6 p.m.

Invisibilia (Latin for “all the invisible things”) is a new series that explores the unseen forces—ideas, beliefs, and emotions—that shape human behavior.

Produced by NPR’s Science Desk and created and co-hosted by Lulu Miller and Alix Spiegel, who also helped create the groundbreaking programs Radiolab and This American Life, Invisibilia weaves narrative storytelling with fascinating new psychological and brain science.

Meet a woman who literally has no fear, and learn how the rest of us might “turn off” fear. Hear the story of a blind man who says expectations have helped him see. Meet a man who has merged with his computer, and a woman who physically feels what others feel.

Invisibilia debuts May 3 and WFIU will broadcast the pilot season of six episodes throughout May and June, interspersing them with specials.

The 12th Annual O’Bannon Institute for Community ServiceThursday, May 28 at 10pm; Friday, May 29 at 1pm; and Sunday, May 31 at 4pm

Join WTIU host Joe Hren for highlights of the 2015 O’Bannon Institute. Guests include Sir Bob Geldof, singer, songwriter, political activist, philanthropist, and author; and Shiza Shahid, co-founder of the Malala Fund, entrepreneur, and social activist. The theme of this year’s Institute is “Be the Change: Discover Your (Super) Power.”

Sir Bob Geldof is widely recognized for his activism. He co-founded the group Band Aid to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia, and organized the successful Live Aid and Live 8 charity concerts.

He has written a number of articles for publications including TIME, and for television created and hosted the six-part BBC series Geldof in Africa. He has received a number of awards, including the Nobel Man of Peace award, and was knighted at age 34 in recognition of his social activist charity work.

Shiza Shahid will be the Institute’s keynote speaker. Of Pakistani origin, she is global

ambassador of the Malala Fund, the organization led by Malala Yousafzai that promotes education for girls around the world who are denied schooling because of social, economic, and political reasons.

A graduate of Stanford University, Shahid was previously a business analyst at McKinsey & Company in the Middle East. She was named one of TIME’s 30 Under 30 World Changers.

The O’Bannon Institute is Ivy Tech Community College-Bloomington’s annual signature event that presents discussions related to nonprofits, education, and political and civic service. Previous speakers at the Institute include former First Lady Laura W. Bush and retired General Colin Powell.
