NEWSLETTER No. 19 27th June 2019
Dear Parents, Friends and Students
Congratulations to our Year 4 students who received their
First Eucharist last Sunday. The children were a credit to
themselves and their families. They received the Eucharist
reverently and respectfully. A big thank you to the children’s
families for their support during this period. I would also like
to thank Mrs Brescacin and Mrs Keddie for their work in
preparing the children and coordinating the Sacrament. The
Year 4 students will be celebrating their class Mass on
Wednesday 3rd July. All parents and members of our
community are invited to join with us and then stay for the
morning tea that will follow.
Next week the students will be celebrating NAIDOC week.
The theme this is year is – "Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s work
together for a shared future.” NAIDOC Week celebrations
are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history,
culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in
Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of
life. It is an opportunity for all Australians to come together to
celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait people, to participate
in a range of activities and to support local Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander communities. We will begin the week
with a special Liturgy on Monday morning. The students will
then participate in various activities during the week.
Congratulations to our Year 5 and 6 students who
participated in the Annual Winter Sports Lightning Carnival
last Friday. As a whole team, (AFL, Soccer and Netball) our
school finished 2nd overall. This is the highest we have ever
achieved as a school. We also won the AFL and Soccer
trophy for being the best performed teams on the day. This
is the first time we have won either of these trophies, a
fantastic achievement by both these groups. All our students
performed brilliantly on the day but, more importantly,
represented our school with pride. Thank you to all the staff
and parents who assisted on the day by coaching or
supporting. A special thank you to Miss Andersen who did a
great job in preparing the students for the carnival.
I have begun interviewing families who have enrolled their
child into Kindy for 2020. Please let others know who may
be interested in coming to our school that they need to
contact the office in order to complete an application for
enrolment. The school is also considering re-opening the
Three-Year-Old Kindy programme. Again, if you know
anyone who may be interested, please contact the school
administration.
School academic reports will be made available of students
in Pre-primary to Year 6 on Thursday 4th July. This is the
first formal report for the year. Reports give parents an
indication of student progress from the beginning of the year
until now. Parents are encouraged to make contact with
their child’s teacher early in Term 3 to discuss any concerns
they have.
Now that winter has well and truly arrived, many students are
coming to school wearing their school jumpers and sports
tops. Could I ask all parents to make certain that those
items that the students can remove are properly labelled.
Some families have purchased second hand items that still
have the previous owner’s names attached. This isn’t helpful
when the item is left behind. Please ensure that these items
are properly labelled.
A reminder to families that Friday 5th July is the last day of
term 2 for students and staff.
Have a great week!

YEAR 5 NEWS
As we come to the end of a very busy term, we are also
finishing off our integrated unit on Greek Mythology. The
Year 5s have certainly enjoyed learning about the
different myths, creatures and language of the ancient
Greeks. Their knowledge and interest has been inspiring.
One of the investigative activities that we have completed
in maths was to create a meal plan for a week with only
$40. This was Mini Vinnies activity, which also made us
think about how many people call on St Vincent De Paul
and how the Society helps those in need. It was fantastic
to see and hear the Year 5s thinking how they could plan
nutritious and balanced meals with only a handful of
pantry items. We wish all our families a happy and safe
holiday. Rest up for another exciting and busy term
ahead.

YEAR 4 NEWS Congratulations to all Year 4 students on their Eucharist
last Sunday. I could not be more proud of all of you. A
special thank you to the support children who were able
to attend the Mass as well.
Next Wednesday the Year 4 class will also have their
class Mass at 9am in the Sacred Space. All parents and
grandparents are welcome to attend. It would be
wonderful if children from Turner and Durkin could supply
the morning tea.
The children are looking forward to Pyjama Day on
Thursday. Please ensure that all children are wearing
sneakers as they still have sport on this day.
Next week the children will also be participating in
NAIDOC Week activities with their buddy class and in a
whole school Liturgy.

FRIENDLY REMINDER

support in this matter.
YEAR 1 NEWS
The Year One class celebrated our first Liturgy last week.
The focus was on friendship and certainly the children
are very good at being kind friends and including
everyone. They approached their Liturgy with
thoughtfulness and reverence. Thanks to all the parents
who were able to join us and to those who helped to set
up morning tea afterwards. The children love having you
around!
We have recently spent some time in Reading lessons
looking at a variety of books about pirates. This led to a
Design and Technology task to make a pirate's treasure
chest using just two pieces of card, scissors and glue.
Lessons such as this - apart from being fun - challenge
children to think creatively, to solve problems, to work
collaboratively and to build resilience (who hasn't tried to
make something only to see it fall apart and have to start
all over again?)
Next week, I will be taking Long Service Leave (just for
the week) and the children will be in the capable and
caring hands of one of our very long-term Relief teachers
whom they already know well. As a school we will be
celebrating N.A.I.D.O.C. Week, including a special
activity with our Year 6 buddies.
I hope you all enjoy a safe and happy holiday. See you
next term - half way through Year One already! Where
does the time go?

PRE-PRIMARY NEWS
The children are very excited about our class assembly
tomorrow and they have been taking part in our assembly
preparations with great enthusiasm! They are required to
be at school by 8.35am so that we can go to the
undercover area and be ready by 9am. As a reminder, the
children will be required to wear sports clothes for our
assembly, including their blue school jumper, or a dark
coloured tracksuit top/jacket if your child does not have a
school jumper. Next Thursday the children will be taking
part in the whole school ‘Pyjama Party’ which will be a
fund-raiser for the LifeLink 2019. The children may wear
their pyjamas to school with their sport shoes. I look
forward to seeing you all at our assembly tomorrow!

YEAR 3 NEWS
We had a fantastic time at our excursion to Woolworths
on Monday. As we have been learning about the
processes that different foods go through before we buy
them at the shop, it was a great experience seeing the
bakery, fruit and vegetable delivery, fridges and freezers.
We also really enjoyed sharing the experience with our
Kindy buddies and taking on the responsibilities of
helping them on and off the bus and playing with them at
Woodbridge Park. At the end of this term we say
goodbye to our practicing teacher, Miss Wilson. We have
had a wonderful time learning from her and participating
in all the interesting experiences she’s planned for us.
We wish her all the best in her teaching career.

REMINDER
Please remember to label your child/
children’s uniforms. We are currently
having issues with uniforms with no
names on them or second hand uniforms
purchased with the old name still on them.
BATTERY RECYCLING We are very pleased to “do our bit” for
the environment by offering recycling
collection for household batteries. You
can drop your batteries off in the metal
collection bin in the hallway opposite the
Year 3 class room.
Semester One Reports Reminder
In preparation for accessing your child’s Semester One
report (Pre-Primary to Year 6) via the SEQTA portal,
please check now if you are able to log on to view your
child’s Semester Two 2018 report so that any difficulties
can be sorted out now, rather than later. Please
remember that your username and password was
created by you, not the school, so you should have this
information in a ‘safe place’. You are able to reset your
password on the portal.
New families to our school and families with their eldest
child currently in Pre-Primary should have received their
instructions on connecting to the parent portal on
Monday 10th June.
