Dear Friends, On Friday, April 3rd, we celebrate the fifth Friday during the Lenten Season. Because of special circumstances, this Friday and the rest of Lent, is very different for every Catholic and human being around the world. Among numerous difficulties and challenges the world faces today because of coronavirus, there is a quiet but very powerful message sent from our best friend Jesus Christ: “DO NOT BE AFRAID!” “Do not be afraid” is used 365 times on different occasions in the Bible. It is a great comfort given to us each day. No matter what our challenges are, Jesus has the power and the desire to quell our fears, o give us courage. As your pastor, I would like to ask you today to offer a prayer, for our nation and the whole world, on this Friday of the Lenten Season. Let us pray together one “Our Father”, “Hail Mary” and “a prayer for protection in time of pandemic,” which I sent you last time and you can also find on our parish website, marymotherofdivinegrace.org. Let us keep our faith strong. Say in your thoughts or out loud: “Jesus, I Trust in You”, and do not be afraid! With the gift of prayer, Fr. Marcin

For our parishioners who do not have access to the internet, we will have a limited supply of hard copy bulletins available for you outside of both churches.

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

Sunday: Fifth Sunday of Lent Wednesday: April Fool’s Day Thursday: St. Francis of Paola Friday: First Friday; Abstinence Saturday: St. Isidore; First Saturday

On the Fifth Sunday of Lent, just before we

begin to enter Holy Week, we are summoned to Bethany. If we had been friends of Mary, Lazarus, and Martha, and found out that Lazarus was gravely ill, we probably would have dropped everything to be with them. This was what was so surprising about the behavior of Jesus. Although he was their close friend, he chose to stay away, that God’s glory would be manifested. This is a persistent theme in John’s Gospel. Right to the very end, Jesus’ works were meant to give glory to the Father. As our Lenten journey reaches a crescendo, let us be mindful that, as people who have “put on Christ” in baptism, we are also called, by our attitudes and actions, to give glory to God. God of love, the gift of your Son extended grace and mercy to all those in need.

Remind me this day and always that Jesus’ death is not just for me, but for everyone,

Let me live every day, extending grace to those I fear, disagree with, or don’t understand.

Help me to see your face in each of their faces.

We pray in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Put aside hatred and hostility. See to it that you refrain from harsh words. But if you do speak

them, do not be ashamed to apply the remedy from the sane lips that inflicted the wounds.

- St. Francis of Paola

Bell Prayer Schedule

9:00am - Prayer for those infected with the virus and all who are ill; Lord, place your healing hand on those who suffer illness. Bring them to full health and ease their anxious hearts. May our prayer and the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary encourage them that they are not alone. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. AMEN 12:00pm - Prayer for health care workers and those attending to the sick; Lord, we are ennobled by those who put their lives at risk in caring for the sick. Keep them safe and embolden them when they are weary. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. AMEN 3:00pm - Prayer for first responders and essential workers; Lord, we pray for those who run to danger to keep us safe and those who serve the common good. Embrace them with your mantle of protection and comfort the fears of their families. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. AMEN 6:00pm - Prayer for people of every nation and their leaders; Lord, the pandemic opens our eyes to see each other as brothers and sisters in one human family. We pray for people of every nation and their leaders, asking that they be inspired to seek the good of all and quell the voices of division. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. AMEN 9:00pm - Prayer for those who have died today; Lord, we grieve the passing of our sisters and brothers who have died this day. We commend them to your tender mercy, confident that nothing, not even death, will separate us from your love. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. AMEN

We are aware that an additional option for communal prayer at Noon and 6pm was previously sent to you. Please commit to what works best for you!

We are motivated to offer this additional means of uniting our people in prayer aware of the feeling of isolation you feel in not being together in the Eucharist and out of concern for the suffering. God Bless You-

You will begin to hear the ringing of DIJ church bells five times a day. It is Cardinal Cupich's and our hope that you will have the experience of being united in prayer, especially at a time when we are isolated. By pausing and lifting up in prayer all those affected by the pandemic, we can offer those in need our support and let them know that they are not alone. The prayer times will be at 3:00pm and ring every three hours each day, with the last bells rung at 9:00pm. Each of the five prayer times will be dedicated to a specific group particularly impacted by the pandemic, as listed below.

This is not a joke: according to the theory of the two calendars, most Christians wanted to celebrate the start of the New Year on April 1, considering it is near Easter Sunday. Due to its relevance, it was proposed during the time of Christianity in Rome, as opposed to the calendar made up by Julius Caesar in 46 B.C. to honor the Roman god of new beginnings Janus. Although there are other cultures that supported the idea, considering the beginning of springtime, which symbolizes the renewal of Earth. April 1 is closest to the vernal equinox; however, it was not officially declared. In his time, Pope Gregory XIII made his own calendar and marked January 1 as the official day of the New Year celebration. That was his attempt to have everyone aligned on the same page, but there are some who still considered the other way. These people, due to their refusal and stubbornness, were ridiculed and referred to as the "April Fools." It was said that those who were not on the same calendar were gullible to confusion, silly pranks and other hoaxes. - Catholic.org (Catholic Online)

Martha and Mary were desperate. Their beloved brother was dying. So close are they to one another and to Jesus that they when they sent word to him they simply said, “The one you love is ill,” confident that he would know they are speaking of Lazarus (John 11:3). They knew Jesus would want to be there with them, to comfort them, and maybe, hope against hope, to do something. If he could heal complete strangers, surely he could keep Lazarus from dying. When Lazarus died before Jesus came they were beside themselves with grief. Four days after his burial, when Jesus finally arrived, Martha and Mary each went to him, weeping for the loss of their brother. Lazarus’s friends wept with them. Martha and Mary’s friends wept too, seeing the pain the women were enduring. And Jesus wept. But in the midst of all this, Jesus brought hope. No doubt Martha and Mary were familiar with Ezekiel's prophecy, that we hear today: “I will open the graves and have you rise from them” (Ezekiel 37:12). Here and now, to these women he loved, Jesus reveals that he himself is the resurrection. In him is life eternal. Martha, Mary, Lazarus, and all who believe already have eternal life within them.
