What is it like to be at Divine Providence School?

We work with each individual student to become the best Disciple of Christ and scholar they can become! Every Monday, during Advent, we gathered as a school community to celebrate the Advent season. Students led in prayer and song as we would light another candle on our Advent wreath. On December 12th, we gathered in our

Church to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Our middle school led us in prayer and our first grade students came forward in procession to honor Our Lady with roses.

We also celebrated Veterans’ Day as a school. We heard from Vietnam Veteran Mr. Ray Kraig. He taught the students what to do when they know someone is a Veteran- to say "Thank you for your service" and "welcome home". We prayed for all Veterans.

Academically our students are involved in interesting projects! The 4th grade class had in an “in-school” field trip with Linda Dunn, a presenter with the Cook County Farm Bureau. They learned to recognize that agriculture provides our most basic necessities: food, fiber, energy and shelter.

Our middle school participated in creating a “Future City”. Future City is a project based learning

program where students in 6th-8th grades imagine, research, design, and build cities of the future. Students had to create a futuristic, recyclable, green, healthy, and sustainable city using constraints and various criteria. The students learned about zoning and infrastructures of a healthy city. Our engineers built cities that were well planned with sustainability and environmental elements.

The NED show came to our students on December 18th. This show was all about kindness toward others and to celebrate differences and each person’ culture. The backdrop for the presentation was from Kenya! Students heard stories from children in Kenya as well as learned some of the Swahili language. Items were sold after the presentation to assist other schools to see the presentation as well as to help provide clean drinking water to the people in Kenya.

Our Advent continued until the very last day of school with a Posada! After our Christmas Break, we look forward to starting a positive behavior and supports program. Students will be able to earn angels when they are found to be going above and beyond the behavior expected at school.

The gift of love, the gift of peace, the gift of happiness- may all these be yours during this Christmas time.

Looking for a way to spend your time this NEW YEAR?

JOIN US for EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

Divine Providence Ministry Center Chapel after the 8:00am Mass at Divine Infant Jesus.

Jesus waits for us in the Blessed Sacrament.

He waits for our little Acts of faith, adoration, love, thanksgiving, repentance, reparation and

charity that we can offer Him as we contemplate His Divine Majesty in the Blessed Sacrament.

St. Alphonsus Liguori wrote: “Of all devotions, that of adoring Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is the greatest after the Sacraments, the one dearest to God and the one most helpful to us”. The Eucharist is a priceless treasure: By not only celebrating the Eucharist, but also by praying before It outside of Mass, we are enabled to make contact with the very wellsprings of Grace ..."

Adoration takes place on the 1st Friday of the month.

SALVATION IN DAILY LIFE

This Sunday is the feast of the Holy Family, which comes on the first Sunday after Christmas Day. Today’s feast celebrates how the humanity of Jesus (including his entire family life) has brought saving significance into the daily rhythms of our human family life.

The scriptures offer instruction and encouragement on how to share—within our families, parish families, and the wider human family—the love that God shares with us in Jesus. Selections from Sirach, Psalm 128, and Colossians encourage us to reflect divine love and thus find holiness in all our human relationships. The reading from Matthew’s Gospel offers a living example of love in the actions Joseph took to protect his young family from dan-ger and to nurture them within the larger family of faith of their time. HAPPY RETIREMENT!

Coach Curby has decided to begin to live the life of retirement!

His last day at Divine Providence was Friday, December 20th. We are so thankful for the time that he has shared with us, and the impact he has made on our students. He had the students ready for class by the music he would play that would be heard when they walked in the door.

We wish him all the best on his retirement although, he has agreed to help out as needed! Many thanks to Coach Curby.

THANK YOU

COACH CURBY!

On December 12th, we introduced our new Spanish teacher, Miss Iliana Carrasco. Miss Carrasco spent the day getting to know her students and their comfort level and ability in Spanish. She handed out to students in grades 3-8 a syllabus of what they can expect to learn for the remainder of the year.

Starting off the 2020 school year, students will return to our new PE teacher, Coach Johnson! Coach Johnson comes to us with an elementary school teaching background and loves to coach basketball!

We are happy to welcome such talented teachers to our DP faculty and look forward to their work in the New Year.

We are PROUD of YOU!

This year, six students benefit from a program through the state of Illinois called “Tax Credit Scholarship”

program. This scholarship helps families offer a Catholic education to their children who would not be able to provide one due to finances. We are excited that 6 students were able to receive such an award, however, we have 63 students that were left on the waiting list. We are now looking for donations for next school year! A donor can help by contributing to the Illinois Invest in Kids Tax Credit Scholarship program. In doing so they control how their state tax dollars are spent while also receiving a significant tax benefit. This donation provides an opportunity for families who desire a Catholic education for their children but who otherwise could not afford that choice. Right now, we have a 2-for-1 matching gift program for schools run by the Archdiocese of Chicago. For every dollar designated to a qualifying school through Empower Illinois between December 1, 2019 and February 29, 2020, the school will receive two dollars in matching funds. The donations are capped at $50,000 per school. When donating, please designate Divine Providence School! If you donate $1,000 and designate Divine Providence School your donation will have a net cost of $250, remember you get $750 back on your state taxes and your donation will provide a total of $3,000 to Divine Providence School, to use for student scholarships. If you have questions, we have answers!

For more information please visit archchicago.org/tcs or call 312.534.2617.

On the evening of December 3, twenty-four excited Catholics took off from O’Hare en route to Israel for ten days. These Catholics, ten of whom are our parishioners, were not tourists going to visit Israel for some “fun in the sun.” Rather, they were pilgrims—individuals who, despite inconvenience, travel to unfamiliar food and settings, and flights totaling twelve hours each way, were determined to walk where Jesus walked and see some of what Jesus saw. It was a trip to Israel but, more accurately, it was a trip to the Holy Land. It was a journey filled with prayer, inspiration and good fellowship. Some have called the Holy Land the Fifth Gospel and with good reason. Seeing the Holy Land for oneself makes Scripture come alive in a way not possible through simply reading about it. Only in the Holy Land can one enter the dungeon at Caiaphas’ house where Jesus spent the night in captivity. Only in the Holy Land can one renew Baptismal promises using water from the same river John the Baptist used. Only in the Holy Land can one touch the place where Jesus was born (and see his mother’s childhood home), touch the stone of Golgotha where he was crucified and go inside the tomb from which he rose from the dead.

Accompanying us on our journey was Archdiocese of Chicago priest Father Ramil Fajardo, as well as a contingent from the Archdiocese’s Diaconate community—deacons, wives, widows and families. Each day we had the privilege of having Mass in the amazing sites. We had Mass at Peter’s house in Capernaum, in Bethlehem (where we were able, by local Church law, to celebrate Christmas), in the town of Mary Magdalene, and, most inspiring and moving of all, in the tomb of Jesus inside the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher.

We were blessed to witness the married couples in our group renew their wedding vows in the town of Cana and we walked the Way of the Cross through Old Jerusalem with lookers-on either indifferent, disdainful or sometimes moved to prayer themselves. If you look around at our pilgrim-parishioners in the days ahead and see a spring in the step or a glow about the person of Marie Amico, Debbie and Rod Collins, Kay and Gary Frezek, Mary Gisch, Isabelle Herrera, Diana and Allen Kuntz, or Jo Ann Oczkowski (and, yes, even me), know that the Land Called Holy has moved them deeply and enriched their prayer lives. They know now that there are Five Gospels. Perhaps this spiritual journey is something for you to consider. Ask any of this year’s pilgrims. Each of them will tell you how blessed they have been to come to know the Lord better.

“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon and touched with our hands… we saw it, and testify to it, and proclaim to you…

[T]hat which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you may have fellowship with us; and our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.

And we are writing this that our joy may be complete…” 1Jn 1:1-4 Deacon Richard Hudzik Holy Land Pilgrimage 2019

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph (Feast) As the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do. (Colossians 3:13)

If you could name just one quality that makes a family holy, what would it be? You might say love, or any of the other virtues that St. Paul lists in today’s second reading. And you may well be right. But what do you think keeps a family holy? What keeps them together for the long haul? Forgiveness.

Why? Because we are all fallen human beings. Even though we have Jesus living in us, we still commit sins. We are bound to hurt each other at times, even when we don’t intend to. That’s why forgiveness in a family is so important.

You might think that the only family that never needed to forgive one another was the Holy Family. After all, Mary was born without original sin, Joseph is a saint, and Jesus is the Son of God! But even without actually sinning against one another, there were still plenty of times when mercy and forbearance were necessary. Maybe Mary forgot to let the bread rise one morning, so they had to go without it that day. Perhaps the boy Jesus accidentally broke the water pitcher. Or maybe Joseph felt hurt because he misunderstood something Mary had said to him. Each of these “innocent” events could have led to resentment if it wasn’t dealt with right away.

The ability to forgive one another, even for the minor offenses that happen in daily life together, is the oil that makes family relationships run well. Saying “I’m sorry; will you forgive me?” and “I forgive you” should roll off our tongues as readily as the words “I love you.” Because without forgiveness, bitterness can grow and love can wither.

So make forgiveness a goal for your family for the coming year. Show your children and grandchildren how to forgive by modeling it yourself. It’s not a concession to say you’re sorry to another person; it’s a grace—one that the Holy Family will give you for the asking!

“Jesus, give me the humility to ask for forgiveness and the mercy to grant it.”
