On July 22, U.S. women’s national soccer team midfielder and 2015 Women’s World Cup winner CarliLloyd was surprised with a ceremony at Evesham’s Blue Barn Recreation Facility to name a court inher honor. Lloyd and trainer James Galanis have been training at the facility since 2003. From left isMayor Randy Brown, Lloyd and Galanis receiving a ceremonial key and an actual key to the building.

Mayor Randy Brown and theproperty mangers of the afford-able housing apartment complexon Sharp Road might have toagree to disagree.

At the most recent meeting of Evesham Township Council,Brown used words such as upset, disappointed and embarrassed ashe described a lack of grass inyards at the complex and the gen-eral lack of upkeep of the com-plex’s landscape.

“They had hay spread allaround when I was there threeweeks ago – hay,” Brown said.

It was for those reasons that

Brown said he was voting to tablea motion that would release amaintenance guaranty for theSharp Road complex regardinglandscaping improvements.

Brown specifically named com-plex property managerMoorestown Ecumenical Neigh-borhood Development Inc. as hecriticized the group, whichopened the 104-unit complex in2009.

“I’m embarrassed to no endthat this project has been outthere for years – you would thinkthey would know how to growgrass by now,” Brown said. “Youwould think they would knowhow to trim shrubs by now.”

However, when asked for com-ment, MEND President and CEOMatthew Reilly said he was sur-prised by Brown’s comments.

Reilly said MEND has beenworking “diligently” with thetownship’s engineers at Reming-ton & Vernick, who sent a letter tothe township finding no objectionto releasing the maintenanceguaranty having found landscapeimprovement to be in satisfactorycondition.

“We were surprised when themayor said that because Reming-ton & Vernick has sent the letterthat we had taken care of all out-standing matters,” Reilly said.

Reilly said MEND acknowl-edges that it’s had challenges overthe years maintaining grass, butsaid the complex does not have anunderground irrigation system

township summer camp, alongwith parents and township offi-cials, all there to present her witha key to the facility and name acourt in her honor.

Before Lloyd arrived, thosekids who packed the gym of theBlue Barn filled the room withChants of “USA” and “I believethat we will win.”

And when Lloyd finally didstep from behind a dividing cur-tain, the cheers might have very

well reach levels loud enough forthose back in Mt. Laurel to hear.

Lloyd, who was originally toldshe would be there to speak to afew dozen kids, thanked thecrowd for being there to greet heras she reminisced about her yearsat the Blue Barn. Lloyd’s time atthe facility stretches back 12years to 2003, after she was cutfrom the U.S. under-21 team andbelieved she would stop pursuing

soccer, before meeting trainerJames Galanis and rekindlingher love of the game.

“We popped in and startedtraining here, banging the ball upagainst the wall, using these matsto shoot. We have used this gymso many times I’ve actually wornout shoes that I’ve had to throwaway from the surface, but it’sbeen amazing,” Lloyd said.

Lloyd used words and phrasessuch as “amazing” and “part of me” to describe the Blue Barn, and said everyone there had al-ways welcomed her and Galaniswith open arms, never trying togive them a hard time for being

there or interrupt their training. She also used her unique jour-

ney, which she said was filled withpeaks and valleys, as a lesson tokids and adults seated before her.

“When I look at all the thingsI’ve accomplished, the greatthings, they’re amazing, they’reunbelievable – all the difficulttimes I’ve gone through, they’retimes that have actually helpedshape me and actually helped me

get back up twice as much,” Lloydsaid.

Galanis also said the Blue Barnplayed a huge part “in buildingCarli Lloyd,” and when it seemedas if Evesham Mayor RandyBrown asked them to attend theday’s event as if it were a favor,Galanis said he and Lloyd weren’tgoing out of their way to be there.

“Every year for the last 12years, November, December, Jan-uary, February, March betweenthree to six hours a day, we havebeen in this gym right here work-ing when no one was watching, and in all those years, we havenever had an issue,” Galanis said.

Brown said Galanis, while inGreece the day after the WorldCup, took the time to call Brownand thank the people of Eveshamand the township for letting themget so much use out of the BlueBarn. As a parent, Brown saidLloyd’s journey epitomizes thatbeing great is an incredible jour-ney that takes hard work everyday.

“I have two little girls, 7 and 9years old, and I want them to haveheroes, too, just like we did grow-ing up,” Brown said. “We are veryfortunate, very fortunate, to havesomeone who has shown the wayfor the younger kids on how tosucceed.”

After being presented with akey to the facility, both a large cer-emonial key and an actual key tothe Blue Barn’s doors, and beingtold her name would be perma-nently painted on the wall, Lloydsaid she looks forward to comingback to train there in the future.

“Who knows, we might evenhave some spectators crowdingaround and watching us train, but it’s good, this is what it’s allabout, bringing communities to-gether,” Lloyd said.

The Lenape Regional High School Dis-

trict has built a dynasty when it comes toteaching the community about safe driv-ing.

For the third consecutive year and thefourth time in five years, the school districtwas one of three grand prize winners in

the U Got Brains Champion Schools Com-petition. In the competition, schools fromacross New Jersey create campaigns topromote safe driving. The team was hon-

ored for its achievements at a recentLRHSD board of education meeting.

Lenape District Television students par-ticipate in the contest annually. Every year, the team is challenged to create a video of 10 minutes or less showing how it promot-

ed safe driving in their school and localcommunities.

John Donaldson, director of televisionservices for the school district, said the

challenging part of winning three years ina row is coming up with new ideas to stayahead of the competition. There were 59teams participating in this year’s competi-

Lenape district drives home another winDistrict wins U Got Brains competition with its ‘Heads Up, Eyes Forward’ campaign

     please see DISTRICT, page 9

The calendar is about to turn the

page to August, and here we

    are, talking about November al-

    ready. We’re talking about Tuesday,

Nov. 3, to be precise. That’s the date for

    the General Election this year.

Yes, temperatures may still soar to

the 90s outside right now, instead of being in the 60s, 50s or maybe even

    40s – hopefully not – as they’re likely to

be in November. Still, the time both we

as voters and the candidates them-

selves spend now determine what our

lives look like for the near future.

This fall, there is no “big name” seat

up for election. Gov. Christie’s seat is

not up for election, though he is doing

some campaigning himself, as we all

    know.

There are no Senate or House of

Representatives seats up for election in

our state, either. But still, 2015 could

prove to be an important year locally.

That’s because, as is the case in odd-

numbered years, all 80 seats in the

General Assembly are up for election.

These elections are just as impor-

tant, if not more so, on a local level

than an election for president of theUnited States. These are the people

    who represent your interests.

    Throughout New Jersey, municipal

governing bodies and boards of educa-

tion will also be holding elections to

choose new members to represent the

    town. Mayors, councilmembers and

school board members often have a

greater impact on your daily life thanyour governor and president.

The governor and president may be

the “sexier” post to vote for, but your

trash pickup, your property taxes and

    your kids’ school curriculum have

more of an impact on your day-to-day

life, and those local post holders are

the ones who control those areas the

    most.

So just because you won’t be voting

for the next governor or the next presi-

dent doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be in

    tune with this November’s elections

    and this November’s issues.

We at The Sun will be providing you

as much election coverage as we can

this fall, especially when there is a con-

tested election at the municipal level. If your town has a contested munici-

pal election, expect a full, multi-week

Meet the Candidates series where we’ll

    provide you detailed information

about the election itself, as well as pro-

files of the candidates and their

    stances on the issues.

If you have any questions you’d like

us to ask the candidates, feel free to

email us at the address to the right.

So while you may still be making

trips to the beach and thinking about

back to school or the start of football

instead of heading to the polls, don’t

fall behind on the issues. What hap-

pens behind those curtains in Novem-

ber could have a profound impact on

what happens in front of them for the

    foreseeable future.

    in our opinion

Get ready to voteThis year’s election is very important for New Jersey residents

    Your thoughts

We want to hear your thoughts aboutwhat’s important to you this electionseason. Send your thoughts and questionsto the email address listed at the right.

tion, and Donaldson said otherschools emulate or take ideasfrom what Lenape has done in thepast.

“We know they’re gunning forus,” he said. “So every year weput a little more effort in it.”

When it began competing inthe competition, LDTV created

the “Heads Up, Eyes Forward”campaign. The campaign warnsmotorists against the variousdangers of distracted driving.

Last school year, the team cre-ated t-shirts to distribute to stu-dents and staff. The front of the t-shirts included the Heads Up,Eyes Forward logo on the frontand a few examples of distracteddriving on the back.

    The team also created magnets

with the campaign logo to distrib-

ute to students. The studentssigned a pledge against distracteddriving and then received a mag-net for their car. Students whohad the magnets on their car hadthe chance to win a “StudentParking Space of the Month.”

For winning the competition, the school district receives a driv-ing simulator, a computer pro-gram complete with a seat, steer-ing wheel and pedals that areused in driver’s education classes.

With the Lenape district winningfor a fourth time, all four highschools now have one drivingsimulator.

“We’ll donate this one toSeneca, so now we’ll have one ateach of the four schools,” Donald-son said.

The Lenape district does notplan to see its streak of wins at UGot Brains end at three. Donald-son said the LDTV students are

    already brainstorming new ideas

to promote its “Heads Up, EyesForward” campaign in new waysagain next year.

    Lenape students preparedto succeed again

Last year, the school district de-buted a Prepared to Succeedvideo, where graduates from thefour high schools talked abouthow the Lenape Regional highschools best prepared them for

college. The school district re-leased its second Prepared to Suc-ceed video earlier this month.

Superintendent Carol Birn-bohm said the video allows thecommunity to hear about the pos-itive aspects of the school districtdirectly from the students.

“They really talk about the suc-cess and excitement they experi-enced at our schools,” shesaid.
