History has taught us all thatfreedoms are never free, but re-quire vigilance and commitmentfrom us who enjoy them," said Fr.Richard Regan of St. Joan of ArcParish, as he delivered the open-ing prayer at the Evesham Town-ship Veterans Day ceremony andasked those before him to lift upall the men and women who havedefended the nations freedom.
With Regans brief prayer, along with the national anthemsung by Carmen Malatino and apresentation by the CherokeeHigh School JROTC color guard,a crowd gathered at the townshipmunicipal building on the sunnyNov. 10 morning and honored the
men and women of the UnitedStates armed forces.
Those gathered for the ceremo-ny included members of town-ship council, AssemblymanChristopher J. Brown, membersof the police department and fire-rescue, residents and multipleveterans from the township.
The ceremony included awreath presentation from Opera-tion Yellow Ribbon of South Jer-
sey, the Evesham-based charitythat provides welcome-homeevents and care packages formembers of the armed services, and the acknowledgment of sev-eral bricks for the townships Vet-erans Walkway on behalf of Ed-
ward P. Bergh, Werner AlfredDrechsel and Michael Pilla.
Mayor Randy Brown told thecrowd they were there to honorthe nations heroes, and to re-member their achievements, courage and dedication, and to
give thanks for their sacrifices.Thinking of the heroes who
join us today, and those who arehere only in spirit, a person canthelp but feel awed by the enormi-ty of what we encounter, Brownsaid. We stand in the midst of
patriots and friends who havenobly served. You have made our
armed forces the most respectedin the world.
Brown also spoke of how theservice members honored on Vet-erans Day come from all walks oflife, but share those same funda-mental qualities of courage, pride, determination, sacrifice, selflessness and a dedication toduty and integrity.
Brown said those qualitieswere those needed to serve acause larger than oneself, both inthose who volunteered and thosewho never asked to leave theirhomes.
They didnt go to war becausethey love fighting; they werecalled to be a part of somethingbigger than themselves, Brownsaid. They were ordinary peoplewho responded in extraordinaryways in extreme times. They roseto the nations call because theywanted to protect the nationwhich has given them and us somuch.
Resident Viki Honeywell at-tended the event, accompanied byher dog Trevor, an Airedale, wear-ing a patriotic red white and blueribbon with his collar.
I brought him because theyused Airedales in World War I tocarry messages from the trench-es, back and forth between thetrenches, Honeywell said. They

After months of negotiations betweenthe township and the police patrol, the twosides finally came to an agreement, and theEvesham Township Council ratified a newfour-year police patrol contract at its Nov.12 meeting. The new contract spans 2014,2015, 2016 and 2017, and has three primaryfeatures, according to township managerTom Czerniecki salary increases, the con-solidation of salary increase step guidesfor offices hired before the 2008 recession
and those hired after, and, most importantof all, an agreement for the patrol to moveto the townships self-insurance program.
Basically, higher copays, higher de-ductibles, a greater emphasis on proactivemanagement of your benefits packageit
really encourages people to use Teladoc, to
visit urgent care clinics rather than go toemergency rooms and participate in ourwellness program, Czerniecki said.
Mayor Randy Brown also extolled thevirtues of having the patrol in the town-ships self-insurance program, or gold planas the township calls it, and said much ofthe negotiations were ensuring the patrolunderstands how the gold plan would bene-fit them and their families.
The gold plan doesnt harm their fami-lies, it actually helps them by the differentthings of which the gold plan entails, which is generic prescriptions, urgent care
and things that will make life easier forthem and even quicker for them, Brownsaid.
Regarding the salary increases, Cz-erniecki said those would start retroactivefor 2014 at 1.95 percent, the second year
with 1.95 percent, the third year with 1.75
percent and then the fourth year againwith 1.95 percent.Czerniecki said the other feature is con-
solidating the two salary guides, which helikened to steps, where officers go into thesteps system until they reach top grade.
We have two guides, one for officershired before the 2008 recession and oneguide for those hired after, and we knew itwas inevitable that we would have to con-solidate those two into one 12-step guide,Czerniecki said.
Chief of Police Christopher Chew said ittook cooperation to get the contract done,
and everybody worked as a team.It wasnt easy, but cooler heads pre-
vailed, Chew said.Chew also thanked former township
Sorry to say this so early, while 60-
degree days were here just a few
days ago, but, alas, the holiday
season has arrived.
The good news is that means many
good-hearted people and organizations
will be gathering food, clothing, toys,
money and other items for those lessfortunate.
At The Sun, we want to help make
your event or drive as successful as
possible. But to do that, we need your
help.
Many retailers count on Black Fri-
day to help put their business in the
black for the year. If holiday sales are
strong, they have a good overall year. Ifsales are soft, they struggle to get by.
The same theory can hold true for
nonprofits and other groups that de-
pend on the publics generosity duringthe holiday season to see them through
the rest of the year. People, naturally,
are more giving during this time of the
year. So, in the coming weeks, youll
see bell-ringers, donation drives and a
lot of other efforts to help those in
need.
We salute everyone who holds a
drive to help those in need. But we also
want to help make those efforts as
grand and successful as possible.
To do that, we need to know about
your event as soon as possible (at least
two weeks is best). We need to know
what types of items you are trying to
collect, who will benefit from the drive,
and, most importantly, how people can
get involved to help you.
Email is the best way to send us this
information, and youll find our newsemail address to the right.
Then, after we get your information,
well take it from there. Well get it into
the paper and let everyone in town
know what it is you are trying to ac-
complish and how they can be a part of
it.
Many families are still struggling
with the economy. There always arepeople in need. Let us help you to help
them. Send us your event information
and lets make this a big donation year.
in our opinion
HolidayhelpersItsthe season to help others; let us knowabout your fundraiser or drive
The need is there
The need for donations this holiday periodis strong. Tell us about your fundraisingeffort or donation drive, and well telleveryone else.

Weve got a first-rate police de-partment, Brown said. Theyknow it, they like it, which wasprobably one of the main reasonswhy we were able to get a dealdone.
