Character analysis

Marco seems like a pretty chilled-out guy for most of the play. We know he's a devoted family man. Ironically, he's so devoted to his wife and kids back in Sicily, that he left them to come to America. What else was he supposed to do? He has to work. Apparently all they have to eat back in Sicily is water and bones. You probably won't see that as a new Campbell Soup flavor anytime soon. On top of the food shortage, one of his kids is dying of tuberculosis.

More about MarcoAlthough Marco is reserved and polite, he is also dangerous and unpredictable. Although he is thankful for the Carbone’s hospitality, he is also extremely cautious. He will not allow himself to become comfortable while remaining a visitor in another man’s home. Marco is an keen observer who fights to keep the peace. Although Marco’s physicality and speech is guarded, he becomes aware of the growing tension between Eddie and Rodolpho.

Marco is older and mentally more mature than Rodolpho. Likewise, he is more grounded. Due to the demands of his family, Marco is a man of grave responsibilities. Living in America for a short time, Marco still abides by Italy’s unspoken law of justice. Once betrayed by Eddie, Marco reverts to the only moral standard he knows. Like a threatened animal, when pressured, Marco aggressively defends and protects his family. Most importantly, Marco possesses a quiet intensity which Eddie grossly underestimates

Rodolpho.• According to Eddie, Rodolpho is an evil man, who is potentially

homosexual and has come to steal Catherine away from him. • From the start of the play, we learn that Rodolpho is Italian. He

comes from Sicily, which is apparently full of fountains and orange trees but there aren’t many job going.

• Rodolpho is also a very good singer, with a high tenor voice. He often sings whilst working at the docks. Rodolpho can also dance, sew and cook. Eddie interprets all these traits as sure signs that Rodolpho is gay. Now, Rodolpho could be gay, but Eddie could also just be desperately trying to find a reason to get Catherine back.

Does Rodolpho use Catherine? • Eddie also accuses Rodolpho of having an ulterior motive in his

‘wooing’ of Catherine. Eddie believes that Rodolpho wants to marry Catherine just so that he can become an American citizen. If this is true, it would suggest that Rodolpho is not a truthful person and is desperate to live the American Dream and have a better life. He could be using Catherine to achieve this.

• On the other hand, Catherine asks Rodolpho,"Would you still want to do it if it turned out we had to go live in Italy?”. Rodolpho replies, "No; I will not marry you to live in Italy. I want you to be my wife, and I want to be a citizen”. So this poses the question, if Rodolpho really is using her, would he tell her the truth outright? Surely, he would say what Catherine wanted to hear and how much he loved her? It’s very hard to know if Rodolpho really is just using Catherine and even at the end of the play, Miller neverfully tells us.

Rodolpho.• Rodolpho is often portrayed as being quite easily led and being

very much led by Marco. He is always looking to Marco for permission to speak and do things. As the play progresses, Rodolpho grows into himself and stands up for himself more. He tells Eddie, ‘Stop that! Have respect for her!’ when Eddie kisses Catherine.

• Rodolpho also stands up to Marco more and beings to tell Marco what to do. As Marco is refusing to promise that he won’t hurt Eddie, Rodolpho takes on an almost parental role and orders Marco to ‘tell the man’ with an authority he would never had at the start of the play.

• This song represents Rodolpho in many ways. Firstly, it’s all about being ambitious, having big dreams and wanting to be successful. This is exactly what Rodolpho hopes to achieve in America.

• ‘I'm gonna trade this life for fortune and fame’. This line is reminiscent of how Rodolpho speaks of life in Italy with contempt and wants to trade that life in for a better one. The first verse also shows Rodolpho’s feelings about life in Italy very well.

• The parts of the song which talk about

getting things for free could be also show how Rodolpho is potentially just using Catherine as his free ticket to a better life.
