NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME MARCH 6, 2011

ARE YOU LAUGHING? Funny how long it takes to serve God for an hour, but how quickly a team plays sixty minutes of basketball. How people can’t find the time to pray, yet have all the time in the world to talk to their friends, and actually complain when a homily is longer than ten minutes. It’s strange how long a couple of hours spent at a church meeting can seem, but how short they seem when watching a movie. It may seem boring to read a chapter in the Bible, but it’s easy to read a hundred pages of a best-selling novel. It’s amazing the effort we make trying to get a front seat at any game or concert, yet we scramble for a back pew at Mass. And how many of us insist we need two or three weeks advance notice to fit a church event into our schedule, but can adjust for other activities in a heartbeat? Maybe you feel it is too hard to learn and pass on the faith, but consider how simple it is to understand and repeat gossip. So many people believe what the TV news says, and question what the Church says. And why does a one hundred-dollar bill looks so big in the offertory basket, but so small when taken to the mall? Ever won-dered why you can send a thousand “jokes” through e-mail, but start sending messages regard-ing faith or Church teaching, and people think twice about sharing with you? How strange that everyone wants to go to heaven, provided they do not have to believe, think, say, or do any-thing different or difficult. Funny how we always expect the Church to step up to help us, but we don’t think we have to step up to help the Church. Funny, isn’t it?
