Mae’s Corner March 2017 Something New To Keep Our Members Informed
Is March going to come in like a lion and go out like a lamb? Lets hope so, it will be nice to see warm sunshine and flowers beginning to bloom. What a great time we had at the Valentines Dance last month. Everyone looked so good in red and I know you all had a great time. It was great seeing that Vincent was able to make it after a long recovery. Don’t miss our St. Patrick’s Day lunch on the 17th of March. Ham, Cabbage and Red Potatoes, doesn’t get much better than that. If you see any of our great folks from Southern Meadows please remember to thank them for the desserts they provide every month. In March it will be on the 23rd and as always I am sure they will be delicious. You may have noticed we have a new bus driver, please welcome Ricky Maddox and make him feel at home as he joins our FSC family. Finally our Wild Game Dinner is the March 18th, Get your tickets early, we will run out. Have a great month. Mae
FSC would like to thank members and the community for food and personal hygiene product donations. Please check on your neighbor to make sure they are warm and have food. We are happy to welcome Mia from Generation back for monthly Diabetic screenings. Mia will be here the second Tuesday of every month from 10am –noon. For most seniors, joints are something that wear away to the point that they may need to be replaced. This can often be a scary proposition, because it means acknowledging that your body doesn't work the way it used to. There's also the fear that something could go wrong and leave you worse off than before, or not fix the problem at all. It's a lot easier to keep going with the status quo instead of trying to forge a new path, even if that change could prove to be much more beneficial than the previous state. However, knee and hip replacements are really commonplace now, and performed with more regularity than ever before. Let's take a quick look at what you could potentially be preparing for. You can essentially get one type of knee replacement (or athroplasty, which means "joint replacement") depending on the severity of the problem: partial or total...knee replacement: What happens is the doctor will take out all of the bone that's been damaged and replace it with an implant, taking time to shape it so it fits snugly like a knee should. There are four main parts to the surgery: Slicing off the damaged carti-lage from both the femur and tibia ends, plus a tiny bit of the bone underneath to prepare the area for the new joint.. The surgeon will then put the new implant In. One option is with a press-fit where the implant has a rough surface so the bone can grow into it, while the other option is to cement-attach it on. A plastic button is placed under the patella to mimic the action of the joint. The last step is to recreate a smooth surface just like your old knee and this is done with a medical grade plastic spacer between the tibia and femur (where there's now metal). This type of surgery works splendidly well for about 90% of recipients, with a near-perfect feel-good rate of 90-95% after 10 years.
