“Persistence, perseverance, and continuous improvement are the ingredients for forming a successful person.”

From the Director of Learning

(Debasish Mridha)

Welcome back to Term Three, a busy term for staff and students. The start of Term Three signifies the beginning of Semester Two at Marcellin College. For all of us, a new semester brings new opportunities and new challenges in our quest for continuous improvement as learners.

At our recent Academic Awards Assembly we acknowledged the hard work and dedication of students across Years 7-11. These awards took a slightly new format to years past, with a deliberate intention to acknowledge and recognise that success at school can be measured in many different ways. Recognising students for their ‘growth’ as learners highlights the importance and value of having a growth mindset and that intelligence is not set in stone, it is not arbitrary or stagnant, but is something that evolves and can certainly be developed.

The recipients were acknowledged across a variety of criteria including; significant ‘growth’ as learners, improved performance, consistency in their approach to their schoolwork, or for the mastery of skills unique to specific subject areas. Most noteworthy, is that each of the award winners were nominated for their efforts across three or more of their classes.

These awards speak to the changing narrative in schools, that the most important academic battle that students are engaged with on a daily basis, is with themselves, as they strive to improve and grow as learners.

In order to develop a growth mindset, we must first reflect on what we have done in the past; we must be able to reflect on our past performances in a way that allows us to understand how we are going? From there we can start to make some decisions in relation to our goals for the upcoming Semester, and most importantly, how we are going to get there. As a College, we will continue to acknowledge our first place-getters at our end of the year Academic Assembly.

The Year 7-11 parent/teacher interviews hopefully provided a valuable opportunity to begin these discussions and to formulate a plan for continuous improvement with the goal for each student to maximise his learning opportunities for the upcoming Semester. As parents, it is critical that these conversations are not lost as we start the new

Semester. Setting clearly defined academic goals for the upcoming semester that are openly discussed at home is critical to establishing a culture of continuous improvement.

HSC TrialsNowhere is the quest for continuous improvement more important than for our Year 12 cohort, who begin their final term of classes at Marcellin. This period marks the culmination of 13 years of schooling and will surely bring about mixed emotions for the graduating class. This will be an exciting, yet challenging time for the 2018 cohort as they look to celebrate and say farewell, while at the same time putting the finishing touches on their learning in preparation for the Higher School Certificate.

Today, 6 August, these boys began their final school-based assessment tasks here at the College - the Trial HSC exams. These examinations are designed to emulate the Higher School Certificate examinations that the boys will sit beginning on Thursday 18 October (yes, just under 10 weeks away). The trial HSC is generally seen as the litmus tests for student performance, and provides the most accurate insight into student preparation, planning and readiness for the HSC.

While this can be a stressful period for students and families, and prolonged periods of study can be isolating for boys, it is important to remember that while there are 156 young men at Marcellin about to sit these exams, there are another 75,000 students from 850 schools across NSW who will sit be sitting Trial HSC exams over the coming weeks. Remember you are not alone in this journey and the most important person that you are competing with throughout your final semester is yourself.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Term 3 has started well and our students are definitely into their routine with their study. As Year 12 approach their final term of schooling we keep them in our thoughts and prayers as they commence their HSC trial exams today which will continue until 20 August. Year 12 will resume normal classes on August 22. The College has ensured that the boys are at all times supported and that the community is well aware of the challenges and opportunities that any exam block presents.

Activities Week

The College has a long history of offering the students at Marcellin College an Activities week program. Each year group from Years 7-11 will take part in valuable experiences, which ultimately contributes to the overall holistic goal and mission of the College. Activities week is compulsory for every student enrolled at the College. Activities during this week are organised and prepared with the needs of the specific cohort in mind. Activities Week offers the students an opportunity of growing their skills and an opportunity to show their non-academic capacities as well. In every case, participation always helps students.

Activities week offers experiences outside the classroom . Although they are not a part of the basic curriculum; they play an important role in offering students the capacity of moulding their lives in becoming well-rounded people. What’s more, these activities are important as they develop the students intellectually. They are also highly helpful in developing the student’s talents. It is important that parents also take an interest, speak to their sons about their experiences, and support the College in encouraging the students to always work hard, participate, take risks and work with others.

On the following page is an outline of the Activities that Years 7 to 11 will be taking part in from August 13 to August 17. All teaching staff at the College will also take part in the week and have been allocated a year team to work with. We are especially grateful to the staff who are attending the overnight camps and Immersion experiences. If you have any questions please contact your son’s year coordinator.

Staff Professional Learning days- Pupil Free days

In Week 5 on Monday 20 August and Tuesday 21 August, the teaching staff will be taking part in 2 days of professional learning. Over the course of the 2 days, staff will complete a course in Gifted Education. Marcellin College is one of the first schools to offer this opportunity to all their staff and it is evident through the vast research that ongoing Professional Learning in this area assists teachers in their classroom practice and in the ongoing opportunity for personalising learning.

Respect for Self, Others and the Environment

At the recent assembly, I spoke with the boys about the importance of always showing respect for self, others and the environment. In particular the importance of ensuring a clean playground, clean toilets and behaviour in and outside the classroom. Getting the simple things right are important as our boys develop into young men. It can be as simple as standing up in the bus when an adult may require a seat or seeing rubbish on the playground and picking it up without having to be asked.

Wearing the College uniform correctly at all times.

Our students are the best advertisement for our College. What they do, say and how they act is crucial in how others perceive the College. Our standards are very high at Marcellin and I am sure that in the majority, parents are extremely grateful for our rules and high expectations of the boys. On the whole our students are meticulous in their grooming and wearing of the College uniform and I ask that this high standard, supported by parents, is maintained throughout the year.

We are always grateful for the wonderful support that parents offer the College and we look forward to the term ahead.

Carmelina Eussen

Deputy Principal

Dear Lord,

Help our Year 12 students in their studies. Grant that they may reflect the best of the work they have done and the best of the teaching they have received.

Lord you are the source of light and wisdom: Graciously let the ray of your wisdom penetrate the depths of these Year 12 students. Grant them a sharp sense of understanding, a retentive memory, and the ability to grasp concepts correctly. Grant them the talent of being exact in their explanations, and the ability to write, clearly and with good sense.

We ask you, Lord, to bless their beginnings, to direct their progress, and to help them in their completions. Amen

HSC Showcase EveningOn Friday evening, 27 July, our Higher School Certificate (HSC) students presented their practical projects at the annual HSC showcase. This event was a fantastic display of the hard work and creativity of the 2018 HSC cohort across the practical subjects of Music, Visual Art, Industrial Technology and Design and Technology. The event also catered for by Marcellin’s esteemed Year 11 Hospitality students.

While this exhibition officially marked the culmination of 12 months of hard work and perseverance, the quality of this work is the result of the knowledge and skills developed throughout the last six years of the boys schooling and it the quality of the projects is testament to the hard work and dedicated support of the teaching staff and parent body across the Marcellin Community as well.

The evening was well supported by the Marcellin community with over 300 guests in attendance. It was great to see so many parents, friends, relatives and interested members of the community in attendance to celebrate and appreciation for the work of this talented cohort. Another pleasing sign were the large numbers of younger students in attendance who came to get some insight into the journey ahead.

Industrial Technology students under the guidance of Ms Bourke produced exceptional industry standard work. The Design & Technology major works that were on display highlighted the creative thinking and authentic problem- solving skills of this cohort. Mr Usino did a great job guiding these boys through the challenges of this unique subject.

In Visual Arts the major works comprised an inspiring collection of drawings, sculptures, photographs and paintings and two unique video’s from our HSC students. The work proved to be of the highest quality, clearly showing the influence of their teacher and mentor Ms Toohey.

Our musicians performed a selection of HSC Music Performance, which were well supported by a group of passionate musicians from younger years as well as the College’s talented tutors. The evening was an excellent opportunity for the boys to gain some valuable experience performing to an authentic audience, and once again highlighted the depth of talent amongst the 2018 cohort. Once again, the work of their teacher, Ms De Francesco and the support of Ms Gamma helped to ensure a professional showcase.

Special thanks and congratulations should go to the Key Learning Area Coordinator of TAS, Ms Bourke, as well as the Teachers in Charge of Visual Art and Music, Ms Toohey and Ms Gamma for their considerable planning and most notably their exceptional expertise.

The evening had the added benefit of being catered for by our outstanding group of Year 11 VET Hospitality students. This also formed part of their competency assessment. Thanks to Ms Benson and Mr Lee for all their work in assisting and preparing our students. Special thanks to Mrs Davis and Ms Mayes for their work in coordinating the preparation of the evening.

Semester One Hospitality Work placement

Year 11 Hospitality students completed their first work placement at the end of last term. The students attended a range of venues from small scale restaurants to larger venues such as South Sydney Junior Rugby Leagues Club, Doyles Watsons Bay and Sheraton on the Park.

The students experienced working in a busy commercial kitchen environment transferring skills learnt at school whilst working to industry time frames and pressure. The feedback from the employers was overwhelmingly positive with comments focusing on the student’s professional attitude and manner.

Highlights

Host employer Johnny Tibbetts from Bold Food was very impressed with the boys who attended his venue. He said that out of all the students he hosts on a regular basis Marcellin students are outstanding. Congratulations to Adam Mattiolo,Harrison Haraszta, Paul Dedden and Paul Vigliante who completed their placement at Bold Food. It is wonderful to have the boys skills affirmed by an industry professional so early in their course.

Sean Bond completed his placement at Catalina, Rose Bay. The chef was so impressed with Sean that he let him prepare and plate some of their signature desserts for customers including our Prime Minister, Malcolm Turbull.

Gabriel Artola was offered part time employment at Bondi Pizza, Eastgardens. The owner commented on Gabriel’s hard working nature and positive attitude.

Flynn Early impressed the staff at Brasserie Bread with his positive work ethic and eagerness to learn. Flynn was given a range of experiences over the week including an opportunity to be part of the company’s “Breaducation”. Flynn worked with Michael Young, one of the trainers (pictured), to run an excursion for a Primary School where the children learned about wheat and other grains, sourdough starter and the process of making bread.

As a result of his hard work and his enthusiasm, Flynn was offered casual employment. Opportunities like these can often lead to apprenticeships and further employment down the track. Many thanks to Sophie Halias the HR manager at Brasserie Bread for ensuring that Marcellin students are given opportunities to learn and excel in an industry setting.

Congratulations to all the Hospitality students on completing 35 hours of mandatory work placement hours.

MCC SportIt has been a very busy opening to Term Three with the MCC Winter season coming to a close last week. Marcellin had eight teams qualify for the semi-finals which were held in Week One with five sides progressing to the grand final. Unfortunately the U/15’s Rugby League, 13B’s Soccer, and B Grade Soccer all fell one game short in 2018 but I’m sure the disappointment of not making the grand final will spur them on in the coming years.

Grand final week brings with it a certain buzz, a feeling of nervous excitement that you do not get any other time of the year. The players and staff know that these opportunities don’t come around too often so they were all encouraged to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the occasion.

Coogee Oval hosted the junior grand finals and first up was the local derby of our U/13C’s V U/13B’s. Having two teams qualify in the 13B Division shows the tremendous depth we have coming through the College. With the regular season matchup washed out both teams went into the match not knowing a whole lot about each other. It was the 13B’s who were too strong however, taking the match 28-4.

The U/13A’s took on Christian Brothers Lewisham, a team who beat them 36-18 only a month ago. The underdog status worked a treat as Marcellin turned up to play tough, gritty football which shocked Lewisham. Randwick took the tight battle 18-12 in front of an elated crowd.

Both opens teams travelled to Leichhardt Oval to face Holy Cross College Ryde in the final, a rematch for both A and B Grade from 2017. Tight matches were expected, and tight matches were delivered. A dramatic, last second field goal saw Marcellin take the B Grade title but unfortunately A Grade couldn’t continue the celebrations. Holy Cross proved too strong, earning back to back premierships with an 18-10 win. The consistency across all grades in Rugby League saw Marcellin also regain the Aggregate Trophy for the 2018 season.

NSWCCC SportCongratulations to Tevita Taumoepenu, Lachlan Gale and Thomas Giles who represented NSWCCC at the Australian Schoolboys championships during the school holidays in Kingscliff, northern NSW. The team were successful in winning the tournament, beating NSWCHS in the final. Congratulations also to Mr Chris O’Connell who was the head coach of the NSWCCC side.

NSW All Schools SportCross CountryJames Tirado and Lachlan Stanfield represented the NSWCCC at the NSW All Schools Cross Country carnival on July 27 at Eastern Creek. Both boys ran very well with James finishing in 4th place and Lachlan in 15th. They finished just outside the qualification to the Australian titles however both have qualified through their Athletics programs outside of school. We wish both boys all the best.

AFLErrol Gulden and Marco Rossmann competed for the NSW/ACT Rams in the U/16’s Australian AFL Championships which concluded in the holidays. Both boys played very well throughout the tournament with Errol winning the MVP medal for both his NSW/ACT side as well as being named the McLean Medallist as MVP of the Division Two competition. To top it off Errol was named in the All Australian team of the tournament. Congratulations to both Marco and Errol.

Ignatius Mitchell (Year 9) was selected in the U/16’s NSW Basketball side who competed in the National Championships in the holidays. NSW were very successful in the tournament winning the Bronze Medal. Well done Ignatius.

India Immersion Preparation Weekend at GerroaThe India Immersion Group will be flying out to Kolkata in West Bengal India later this term. While nothing will fully prepare us for what awaits us in India, we certainly can work together as a group to better understand he experiences that we will encounter.

Recently, as a group we travelled to Gerroa and had time lto isten, learn and better understand what it means to be participants in a Marist Immersion. Thank you to Mr Kitchingman for transporting the students o and from Gerroa. Also thank you to Mr McGrath who joined us at Gerroa. He shared his previous Immersion experiences with the boys and provided some valuable insights into how we can be more aware and sensitive to the communities who will be our hosts.

THE SACREDBALANCING ACT

Lisa Hendey

Today’s families are busier and more in need of the graces of the Church and the promise of the Gospel than ever before. The Sacred Balancing Act delivers a model for busy families partnering with their parish, school and communities, providing tools to more efficiently form the faith of their children. The presentation will also discuss how to relate lovingly with teenage, young adult or adult children, who separate themselves from Church.

Lisa Hendey is the founder and editor of CatholicMom.com, a renowned author of several books including The Grace of Yes and The Catholic Mom's Prayer Companion, and has extensive public speaking and media experience.
