History pre colonial•Maori were seen as uncivilized by missionaries
•Had a well instituted tradition of knowledge, learning and teaching which was integral to their culture
•Had their own educational system
•No written language, was visual e.g. carvings
•For example, they had a place to go (whare wananga) where the elders hand down knowledge and tradition orally OR through their waiata
LANGUAGE• Kohanga reo centers established for
preservation of maori language – starting from little ones
• Permeates New Zealand society• Recognised as a language for all of society –
Maori Language week• Maori language as a subject in schools
DIVERSITY(PASIFIKA AND MAORI)
• Need to understand cultural capital which pertains to these ethnic groups for effective teaching
• SES• Low decile schools – pasifika and maori students mostly found
