As you’ve probably noticed, a lot has been happening here in Vauxhall.

A message from the chair

3

We feel it has become a cleaner, safer and more pleasant place to be, with new leisure choices for our member businesses and their employees, including our fantastic ice rink at Christmas 2014.

Hard to believe we’re half way through our first term. This booklet details progress so far under our four ‘themes’ – Safe, Change, Day & Night and Together. As you will see we have made excellent progress on all of the pledges we made in our 2012 Proposal document.

Now is an important time for all of us. New investment is bringing ever-faster change to Vauxhall. We can find solutions to some of the issues we have been wrestling with for years, particularly with the proposed removal of our notorious gyratory. At the same time we must ensure that Vauxhall’s status as a commercial area is enhanced, and that our members are not inconvenienced by the impacts of development.

We hope you are also finding that Vauxhall One is good value – for you, your business and the wider Vauxhall community. But we rely on our members for ideas for new events and services. Do consider joining the many local businesses who are involved in setting the direction of Vauxhall One through our board or theme groups. Dates of our four theme group meetings are on our bright and interesting new website.

We are really trying to put the vibrant in Vauxhall!

George Foster Chair, Head of Marketing at the Kia Oval

Making Progress on our PledgesMaking Progress on our Pledges

Here’s how we’re doing on the eight pledges we made to you in 2012.

54

01. Employ a team of wardens to work with the police and others to improve safety and security and to welcome customers, clients and visitors to the area.

Since we introduced our wardens’ service in May 2012, they have conducted 45,000 hours of patrols – discouraging anti-social behaviour, reporting environmental problems and offering assistance. In that time street crime has come down by 16%. Our independent survey in January 2014 indicated that 86% of local employees now feel very or fairly safe.

02. Transform our railway arches and bridges with CCTV, better lighting, attractive art and creative installations.

Two railway arches have been transformed with light installations and a programme for the remaining ten arches is underway, with two more arches scheduled for completion by spring 2016. New CCTV cameras, for central Vauxhall, monitored in real time, will be in position this summer.

03. Fight for local employers’ interests in the future development of the area, insisting on top-quality public realm and substantially improved amenities.

Our board now includes representatives from Transport for London, Network Rail and Lambeth Council, including the lead member for jobs and growth. The proposed removal of the Vauxhall gyratory has been brought forward, and we will soon have a new cycle superhighway through the area. We arrange regular briefings for our members.

04. Promote Vauxhall’s world-class venues – clubs, hotels, restaurants and visitor attractions – to London and the UK, joining us up to the rest of the South Bank.

Vauxhall venues are now actively promoted on the Riverside App and through the One Big Summer Guide which goes out to visitors and locals throughout the summer months. Our new website includes a state-of-the art business directory, and we seek to promote our venues through our major events, such as the ice rink.

05. Increase local spending through an area-wide incentive scheme offering discounts to Vauxhall employees in local clubs, bars, restaurants and shops.

Our successful ‘perk card’, encouraging local spend, is available for businesses to advertise discounts and special offers to employees, residents and visitors. A new, upgraded perk card will be launched in May 2015.

06. Connect businesses with their local community and increase corporate support for education, employment and environmental initiatives.

Our Corporate Social Responsibility programme has encouraged mentoring of local school children, donations to the Vauxhall Food Bank and Christmas gifts for Graham House residents, in addition there have been two innovative community consultation events and a team challenge day in Vauxhall Park.

07. Leverage our members’ investment to attract further funding from other sources, with an aim of 1:1 matched funding within five years.

We have successfully negotiated external funding for our railway arch transformation, our green walls, implementation of our ‘missing link’ street greening programme and our summer events.

08. Lobby for better value from those services paid for through your business rates.

We have reported numerous environmental defects for action, negotiated effectively with Police and Council regarding better co-ordination and brought in a weekly team of Community Payback participants at no cost to clean, litter-pick and paint central Vauxhall.

We believe we are delivering on our pledges, but we think we have achieved a lot more. Read on!

What you told independent market researchers

What our Members say

“Been doing a great job in a relatively short space of time: lights, railway arches, events etc make a difference to the area. Proves the value of the BID concept.”

“Have definitely seen improvement. They are definitely having an impact.”

“Vauxhall’s on the up – that has to be good for our business.”

“Open air cinema – a great idea, our business did really well those nights.”

“I would say that the visibility really has gone up in the past year in particular. There is more of a feeling of Vauxhall being a neighbourhood now. They have done a really good job bringing that together.”

“Definitely noticed a big difference around the station after jet washing in the street and tunnels.”

“Huge improvements made since the BID started – streets looking cleaner and lots more for our staff to do at lunchtime and after work. Retaining committed and specialist staff is vital to this company’s success – Vauxhall One’s efforts help with this.”

There are huge opportunities for Vauxhall businesses as our area undergoes massive regeneration. We also need to make sure our members don’t lose out.

Our four key aims for the future:

Outstanding spaces and places – with cycling and walking at the heart of London’s new gallery district

A wider choice of shops, amenities and leisure – that support our neighbourhood’s quirkiness and character

A top destination for visitors – that promotes our cultural attractions and events to a wider audience

A great place to live and work – with better conditions for all, and more employment opportunities for local residents.

As well as building on our current activities, we want to do some new things:

To help our members’ employees become healthier and fitter

To be the most environmentally–friendly Business Improvement District in the UK, with increased green coverage and improved air quality

To work with others to mitigate the negative impacts (e.g. noise and congestion) of the development that is coming to our area

To lobby for a new pedestrian and cycle bridge to link our new gallery district with Tate Britain

It’s a great challenge but we think it will benefit everyone in Vauxhall – get in touch to find out how you can help!

A glimpse of the future
