POLL: 63% APPROVE OF BRIAN BOWMAN

June 15, (Ottawa, ON) – A new Mainstreet/Postmedia poll finds that 63% of Winnipegers approve of Brian Bowman’s performance as Mayor. The Mainstreet/Postmedia Poll has a margin of error of +/- 3.46%, 19 times out of 20.

“This is a solid score for Mayor Bowman,” said Quito Maggi, President of Mainstreet Research. “Mayor Bowman’s support is fueled by younger residents and seniors - and unlikely combination but one that bodes well for future electoral success. This is a very health rating for this point and time of his mayoralty.”

63% of Winnipeg residents approve of the mayor’s performance with 27% disapproving and a further 10% undecided.

The poll also found residents split on a proposed mandatory helmet by law, though more are in favour than against by 5%, 39% to 34%. Winnipegers are also dog friendly with 42% approval for a proposed downtown dog park (42% approval, 27% disapproval, 30% undecided - .however on the issue of Pitbulls 62% believe they should be banned. Winnipeg instituted a Pitbull ban almost 30 years ago.

“Safety is an ongoing concern, particularly for parents,” continued Maggi, “However it looks like making helmets mandatory for adults in all situations has plenty of detractors. We found much more approval for a downtown dog park, 43% of Winnipegers like the idea, 51% among seniors, with a further 30% undecided about the idea and 27% opposed.”

“While some have proposed lifting a ban on Pitbulls, Winnipeg residents very clearly believe the ban should continue. 62% indicated they believe Pitbulls should be banned and support is consistent among all demographic groups. While Pitbulls have been banned in Winnipeg for almost 30 years there are proposals underway to ban them in other parts of Canada - most noticeably in Quebec where the Public Security Minister says a Pitbull ban is being considered.”

“We found residents are split on what the city should be able to do with the money collected from water bills. 43% believe the money should only be spent on associated costs and services while 39% say the money could be used on anything and treated as general revenues. With only a 4% gap the numbers are essentially a tie just outside the poll’s margin of error,” finished Maggi.

ONLY WE CALLED

THE LIBERAL

MAJORITY.

Mainstreet Research | 132−2255B Queen Street East | Toronto | Ontario | M4E 1G3 | Canada

“I recommend "Raiders of the Lost Campaign Arc," released Oct. 18, because it’s an interview with a pollster that everyone who follows politics should hear. Quito Maggi, of Mainstreet Public

Research, was the only pollster I saw call the Liberal majority with such confidence, a week before we voted.

Maggi also has the distinction of being the guy who predicted the BC Liberals would win in 2013, in defiance of the majority of the polls.

His technique involves picking a true bellwether riding and polling it thoroughly. His explanation for how he does it is well worth a listen and should be required research for anyone running a

political campaign.” - Shannon Rupp, The Tyee, November 4th, 2015
