Each semester the mechanical and aerospace engineering department organizes seminars under the sponsorship of the Graduate Seminar Series and the Missouri S&T Academy of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineers (AMAE). One of the purposes of the seminar series is to broaden our students academically and to aid in their professional development by providing another connection with the world of industry, business and research. In recognition of the department’s centennial, established and renowned alumni were also added to the line up. These seminars consist of exceptional speakers whose research spans the range of the mechanical and aerospace engineering disciplines. Through these seminars we seek to expose our faculty and graduate students to a scale of topics in areas both related to and complementary of those areas investigated in the department.

TWO FACULTY RECEIVED NSF CAREER AWARDSIn 2016, Drs. Gao and Yang, assistant professors of mechanical engineering, received the National Science Foundation’s most prestigious award for young faculty members. The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award is National Science Foundation’s “most prestigious award in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations.” Both faculty will be receiving approximate $500,000 over the next five years in support of their research.

Dr. Jie Gao’s award is in support of her research “Flat Singular Optics: Generation and Detection of Optical Vortex Beams with Plasmonic Metasurfaces in Linear and Nonlinear Regimes.” The current open research challenges in singular optics are how to generate pure vortices with broad bandwidth and polarization singular beams on chip, how to realize compact linear and nonlinear vortex beam converters, and what

kind of device enables direct identification of vortex topological charges. Supported by this award, Dr. Gao will conduct research work to explore flat singular optics, generate singular optical beams in both linear and nonlinear regimes, as well as detect vortex beam orbital angular momentum with optoelectronic integration. This research paves the way for advancing many applications in optical communications, beam shaping and conversion, optoelectronic devices, and optical sensing images.

Dr. Xiaodong Yang’s award is to support his research on “Light Manipulation in Metal-Dielectric Multilayer Metamaterials with Large Anisotropy.” Metamaterials are artificially structured composite materials with properties significantly different from those of the natural materials. “In optics, the permittivity, a measure of how an electric field affects and is affected by a medium,

of a material is an important measure of its ability to store electromagnetic energy and to convert electromagnetic energy into heat. Therefore, it affects the propagation and manipulation of light,” Yang says.

Yang explains, “The permittivities of most natural materials are usually isotropic, having the same value in all directions, with positive values for dielectric or transparent materials such as air and glass, and negative values for noble metals such as gold and silver.” By placing transparent and metallic thin layers in alternating order, optical multilayer metamaterials are created with permittivities that could not be realized using materials that occur in nature. Yang will use the multilayer metamaterials to study novel phenomena of light propagation and manipulation and to advance innovative applications using new kinds of metamaterials.

Dr. Gao joined the Missouri S&T faculty in 2012 from Columbia University, where she earned a Ph.D. in applied physics. Dr. Yang joined the faculty in 2011 from the University of California, Berkeley. He earned a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Columbia University in 2009. Dr. Yang also received the 2016 Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award for his optical metasurfaces research.
