From modest beginnings in 1912 when 63 students crammed into a single room above a fire station, Madison College has positioned itself as one of the finest two-year campuses in the country. We have a lot for which to be proud. Today’s graduating class is evidence of that.

Like every student who walks across the stage this evening, you have a unique motivation that carried you to this day. But what you all share in common is hard

work, determination and an unflagging drive to achieve success. When you began your education at Madison College, you may have thought this day would never come. But the reality is this: It’s here! And you did it!

After you receive your diploma, your relationship with Madison College will be forever changed. No longer will you be students of Madison College. Instead, you have earned the privilege of joining the ranks of graduates who can proudly claim the title “Madison College Alumni.” I hope you will be influential ambassadors of the College and the knowledge and skills you acquired here, as well as emissaries of the values and sense of purpose that led you to this milestone.

Denise J. Cohn began her educational journey at Madison Area Technical College in 2011. With the support of her husband and

two daughters, she discovered a passion for student success and has remained committed to helping fellow students thrive.

Denise became an officer in the Madison College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. She was appointed the first Vice President of the Wisconsin Region in 2013. Her focus in this role was on a statewide “Commit to Complete” campaign. Her dedication to Wisconsin chapters earned her the Distinguished Regional Officer award at the 2014 Phi Theta Kappa International Convention.

Denise has been a student ambassador since 2012. She was chosen to help pilot the Campus Engagement Program, which was designed to bring student-focused events to the regional campuses. Her mission was to create a fun, active atmosphere where students could reach out to each other and build supportive networks. In 2014, following a referendum vote by the student body, this pilot became an ongoing program. Her work led to a Madison Area Technical College Service Award as well as an Ambassador of Distinction award.

In the spring of 2015, Denise plans to begin her undergraduate studies in business at UW-Platteville. She hopes to continue serving students in a meaningful way.

LEGEND OF THE CAP AND GOWNIn ancient Greece, when formal education was for the very rich or the very determined, a wise old teacher was approached by a group of aristocrats. “Our sons have completed their studies and it is time for them to return to their homes and live in the style befitting their station. On the morrow, we will hold a great banquet in their honor and expect them to be dressed in their finest garments.” The old man smilingly answered, “They will be there,” and he added, “appropriately dressed.”

The following day, the banquet hall was filled with royalty and nobility dressed in dazzling jewels and costly finery; then came the great moment when the students entered with their beloved teacher. A cry arose from the crowd, for here were their young men dressed

not in the tunics of the noble, but in simple robes, each carrying a mortar board — the mark of a common workman.

“Let me explain,” spoke the teacher as he raised his hands to silence the crowd.

“Your sons are dressed in the clothing of the mason, for their destiny is to build. Some will build cities, some will build lives — perhaps one of them may even build an empire. But all will be builders on the solid foundation of knowledge.”

And thus, over the years, the cap and gown have become a traditional part of graduation, symbolizing the fact that our men and women are builders — of their own future and the future of the world.

Veterans: red, white and blue cord A red, white and blue cord identifies those graduates who have given military service to their country.

Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society: gold stole and tassel Phi Theta Kappa is the honor society for high academic achievement at a two-year college.

TRiO Program: red, white and black cord TRiO is a federal student support program for first generation college students, students with disabilities or those facing economic challenges.

International students International students will be wearing stoles representing their home countries.
