MACKAY TRIBSTERS TAKE ON IRONMAN BUSSELTON – 3rd DECEMBER A report from John (Plattsy): Busselton Ironman When we arrived at the beach a few days before the event, the water was calm, and the jetty just seemed to go on and on. Going to swim around that was going to be a challenge. The weather was mildly cool towards cold and early morning and evening you needed a jumper. D Day dawned and the temperature had cranked up to Qld Temp. Race day was going to top 35 Degrees. As we are watching from the Jetty the 70.3 started their race as a rolling start and probably about 3/4 of them had got in the water and started swimming, when the voice came over the loud speakers “that the swim leg had been closed”. Due to “Bruce” aka a 2.5m Shark had been sighted. So, the lifesavers swung into action and cleared all the swimmers to the steps on the jetty. You know in the race briefing when they say if the lifesavers start blowing their whistles, stop swimming and look to see what the lifesavers are saying. Within moments there were rubber duckies and boats everywhere surrounding the swimmers and helicopters flying overhead. So eventually the words came down from the race director that our swim leg was also closed (not a Happy Camper) and we would be starting from the beach edge as a rolling start. That wasn’t in the training program!! Safety first and so we started off the beach. The ride was a great ride through the surrounding areas, mostly a flat course with a few rises in some areas. The scenery was wonderful; tree avenues where you rode under the tree top canopy, but I was concentrating on the riding truly. Bernard went past me on the 100km mark and continued out of sight, because drafting is naughty. I struggled around the 130-km mark as the heat had started to slightly affect me and my legs blew up. I stopped at the next aid station and got off the bike and walked around for a while taking in food and water and giving myself time. I hopped back on the bike and felt good and headed back to transition. Steve and Cathy were waiting and watching for me to get in, they told me that Bernard had come through. The run leg was going to be a flat course, but it was very open to the sun and the wind had dropped to nothing I was feeling fine. I passed Bernard within the first 10km and was running well. Steve and Cathy had changed position, they said it was a better spot, I think it may have been the A/C and the drinks available for them that made them move. As the race progress and the temperature continue to rise, the locals decided we needed to be cooled off and helpfully got their hoses out and started spraying us. Which helped keep the upper body cool but did of course fill my shoes with water and wet socks and feet don’t go well. I started to develop blisters on the pads of my feet and around my toes. Bernard was going well, and he quickly caught back up and passed me again. Steve and Cathy had move closer to the finish line. As I came in for the last lap I couldn’t run anymore but was walking on the heels of my feet. I tried to run but it was too painful so walking it was, I knew that I was going to finish, it wasn’t going to be pretty, but I would get there. Thank you for all the words of encouragement from home during the race and after. The support that you have given me during the lead up to this event has been wonderful. Thank you.

MEMBERS ONLY XMAS TEAM RACE – 3rd DECEMBER We may have had a small turn out but we all had a lot of fun none the less. We had 5 teams of 3 and 1 team of 2 and teams stuck together and encouraged each other right to the finish line. I was too busy with the Go Pro I forgot to stop the Ipad so I am afraid this event was purely done for the fun of it (as it should be anyway)! Ben did a great job on the BBQ and we thank Kieron for coming out to take photos!
