MACEDONIA’S MISSION STATEMENT Mission: A community of believers responding to the Gospel of Jesus Christ

through faith, worship and action. Vision: That Christ might have first place in everything. (Col. 1:18)

The “Why’s” of how passing on the faith is important! ▪ Faith is formed by the power of the Holy Spirit through personal, trusted relationship - often in our homes, youth groups, and congregation. ▪ The church is a living partnership between the ministry of the congregation and the ministry of home. ▪ Where Christ is present in faith, the home is church too. ▪ Faith is caught more than it is taught. ▪ If we want Christian Children and youth, we need Christian adults and parents.

Three Qualities of a Disciple ▪ Available ▪ Authentic ▪ Affirming

Four Keys for Daily (& Faithful) Living ▪ Caring Conversations ▪ Devotions ▪ Service ▪ Rituals & Traditions

February 9, 2014 Holy Communion Setting Three - 10:30 Worship Service INTRODUCTION Light shines in the darkness for the upright, the psalmist sings. Isaiah declares that when we loose the bonds of injustice and share our bread with the hungry, the light breaks forth like the dawn. In another passage from the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus, the light of the world, calls his followers to let the light of their good works shine before others. Through baptism we are sent into the world to shine with the light of Christ. PRAYER OF THE DAY P Let us pray. C Lord God, with endless mercy you receive the prayers of all who call upon you. By your Spirit show us the things we ought to do, and give us the grace and power to do them, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C Amen. CHILDREN’S MESSAGE Richard Johnson ANTHEM Jesus Calls Us by Philip M. Young Chancel Choir FIRST READING Isaiah 58:1–9a Pew Bible, page 841, OT A A reading from Isaiah, chapter fifty-eight. Shortly after the return of Israel from exile in Babylon, the people were troubled by the ineffectiveness of their fasts. God reminds them that outward observance is no substitute for genuine fasting that results in acts of justice, such as feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, and clothing the naked. THE READING BEGINS A Word of God, word of life. C Thanks be to God. PSALM 112:1–9 (we read together) Pew Bible, page 692, OT

SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 2:1–12 Pew Bible, page 202, NT A A reading from 1 Corinthians, chapter two. Though people such as the Corinthians are enamored with human philosophy and wisdom, Paul continuously presents God’s hidden wisdom which is Jesus Christ crucified. True spiritual maturity involves judging ourselves and others in light of God’s revelation in the cross. THE READING BEGINS A Word of God, word of life. C Thanks be to God. Stand GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (John 6:68)

GOSPEL Matthew 5:13–20 Pew Bible, page 5, NT P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the fifth chapter. C Glory to you, O Lord. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus encourages his followers to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world, doing good works and keeping God’s commandments. P The Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON A PUBLIC MESSAGE: BEATITUDES Text: Matthew 5:13–20 HYMN OF THE DAY O Morning Star, How Fair and Bright ELW 308 APOSTLES’ CREED C I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. SHARING OF THE PEACE (Matthew 5:23-24) P The peace of Christ be with you always. C And also with you. The people may greet one another with a sign of Christ's peace, and may say, " Peace be with you," or similar words. DEDICATION OF TORCHES JOYS AND CONCERNS OFFERING OFFERTORY HYMN Lord of Light ELW 688 PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION (1 Timothy 2:1,2) A Guided by the light of Christ, who has been made known to the nations, we offer our prayers for the church, the world, and all people in need. A brief silence. A Your light springs forth like the dawn. Call your church to share the mystery of your grace with a broken and searching world. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A Increase our care for the earth and all its creatures. Help us reflect your light in our use of these good gifts. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A You care for the weak and the strong, O God. Raise up leaders who will free the oppressed in all places (especially). Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer.

A Quickly send your healing for all in pain (especially). Feed the hungry and shelter the homeless. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A Give light and life to this gathering of faith, that we may delight to know your ways and share them with a world longing to know you. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. Here other intercessions may be offered. A Satisfy our needs until we gather with all your saints from every time and place in your glorious light. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Radiant God, hear the prayers of your people, spoken or silent, for the sake of the one who has made his dwelling among us, your Son, Jesus Christ our Savior. C Amen. THE LORD'S PRAYER (Matthew 6:9-13) C Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. BLESSING P May the love of God surround you, may the peace of Christ fill your souls, And may the gentle Holy Spirit illuminate your way, now and forever more. C Amen. SENDING SONG Joyful, Joyful ELW 836 DISMISSAL (Matthew 28:19) A Go in peace. Let your light shine. Remember the poor. C Thanks be to God. POSTLUDE

Welcome friends! Christ’s light shines in our darkness; God’s love conquers hate; Spirit-given faith is stronger than fear. So we gather to praise the all-powerful Lord of Life. Welcome! Visitors! We are delighted you are with us. Please give us your name, address and phone num-ber on a Welcome Card in the pew pocket or in the Friendship Register. The Altar Flowers are given to the Glory of God and in memory of Wallace and Edna Gee by John and Xylda Gee. Winter Jam is February 15. Please let Melinda know by TODAY if you will be attending. If our group is 10 or more, we may get JamNation tickets which will guarantee our seating. Still looking for a male chaperone for the mission trip this summer, July 27—August 1. To date, ten youth will be attending. Have you ever heard someone say that the future of our church is our youth? If that is true, then it's our job to teach them about Jesus. We have two people willing to lead the Children's Sermon portion of our service and ironically, neither of them have children. Will you consider being a part of this important ministry? Contact Yvonne White, please. Lenoir Rhyne Scholarship forms are out! High school seniors interested in applying for this wonderful scholarship are welcome to stop in the church office for a copy. Through the generous support of everyone who was here last Sunday and gave to the Souperbowl of Caring, Macedonia will be giving Allied Churches of Alamance County $776.22. Thank you so much for supporting this worthwhile cause.

In December, a small group of

Macedonians visited a nursing home where one of our members was receiving respite care. We sang four or five songs and

decided that we should do this again. If you are interested in joining, talk to Pastor Shoffner or let Cindi know. Fred Black

will be bringing his guitar and people of ALL ages are welcome.

SERVICE SCHEDULES FOR FEBRUARY

It's that time of the year again! Macedonia, along with Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, provides home-cooked meals for the L.E.A.F. organization at Elon. L.E.A.F. stands for Lutherans, Episcopalians, And Friends. They worship at 4:00 on Sundays in the sacred space in the Numen Lumen Pavilion. The meal is served at 5:00 to about 20 students. Meals should be delivered at 3:45 to avoid disrupting the worship hour. Last semester, we coordinated with the students who met us at the sidewalk with a cart, so you don't even have to park! They serve themselves and clean up, so you do not have to stay, unless you take food in something you want back. It can be a family, several families, a committee, a circle, a choir -- anyone! Macedonia has 4 meals during the first semester: February 5 March 2 and 16 April 13 Please check your calendar and let me know which Sunday you are able to help. Thank you, Yvonne White

How Do You Know If Something Is A Good Fit?

Normally you would look at the size, the color, the shape and the price of the item. Then maybe you would read the labels for item content and how to use it or wear it. Here’s where it gets exciting...you try it out or try it on. If it works as stated or it fits per-fectly...you have a great match and you feel good about your choice. You can’t wait to get busy using it or wearing it. You do so and then you know for sure ...it is a good fit for you! Serving God in new ways is something like trying on that new outfit or taking that car you have been eyeing for a test drive. A good fit is important. Deciding on where and how you will serve God is to decide what particular area of the church’s ministry is a good fit for you. How would you know? Sometimes you just have to try one out. With that said, how about checking out the Care Ministry Team as a place to start? Care Ministry Team (CMT) may be just the place you have been looking for. It might be that “good fit”. Team meetings are the first Monday of the month from 6:00-7:00PM in room 10 of the educational building. Meeting days and times are based on team member schedules. You are welcome to come to a team meeting and learn about the Care Ministry or you can contact Gail Pertschi 336-269-4193 for more information.

Just the Facts Please... • Studies indicate that volunteering strengthens employment prospects. Volunteers have 27% higher odds of finding a job after being out of work than non-volunteers. • Other data reveal that health is improved by serving others. As described on a recent Maine publication, volunteering is an excellent antidote to feelings of isolation, loneliness and depression.
