Mission: A community of believers responding to the Gospel of Jesus Christ

through faith, worship and action.

Vision: That Christ might have first place in everything. (Col. 1:18)

The “Why’s” of how passing on the faith is important!

▪ Faith is formed by the power of the Holy Spirit through personal, trusted

relationship - often in our homes, youth groups, and congregation.

▪ The church is a living partnership between the ministry of the congregation and

the ministry of home.

▪ Where Christ is present in faith, the home is church too.

▪ Faith is caught more than it is taught.

▪ If we want Christian Children and youth, we need Christian adults and parents.

Sunday, June 8, 2014 Day of Pentecost Baptism Setting Eight 9:30 (ELW) INTRODUCTION Today's festival derives its name from the Jewish festival of Pentecost, observed fifty days after Passover.

On the fiftieth day of Easter we celebrate the Holy Spirit as the power of God among us that heals,

forgives, inspires, and unites. In the reading from Acts, images of wind and fire describe the Spirit poured

out on disciples of all nations. In John's gospel the risen Christ breathes the Spirit on his followers on

Easter evening. In the one Spirit we are baptized into one body, and at the Lord's table the Spirit unites us

for witness in the world. P = Pastor C = Congregation A = Assistant VOLUNTARY We Pray Now to the Holy Spirit Dieterich Buxtehude

(1637-1707) CALL TO WORSHIP (All Standing) LEADER: In the beginning before time, before people, before the world began, ALL: GOD WAS. LEADER: Here and now among us, beside us, enlisting the people of earth for the purposes of heaven, ALL: GOD IS. LEADER: In the future, when we have turned to dust and all we know has found its fulfilment, ALL: GOD WILL BE. LEADER: Not denying the world, but delighting in it, not condemning the world, but redeeming it, through Jesus Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit, ALL: GOD WAS GOD IS GOD WILL BE.

C O God, on this day you open the hearts of your faithful people by sending into us your Holy

Spirit. Direct us by the light of that Spirit, that we may have a right judgment in all things and

rejoice at all times in your peace, through Jesus Christ, your Son and our Lord, who lives and

reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. ANTHEM Prayer of St. Francis St. Francis of Assisi/Allen Pote

FIRST READING Acts 2:1-21 Pew Bible, page 144, NT

A A reading from Acts, chapter two.

Pentecost was a Jewish harvest festival that marked the fiftieth day after Passover. Luke portrays the

Holy Spirit being poured out upon the disciples before the gathered and astonished people assembled in

Jerusalem for the festival. Filled with the Spirit, the disciples were able to witness to the power of Christ's

resurrection.

THE READING BEGINS

A Word of God, word of life.

C Thanks be to God.

PSALM 104:24–34, 35 (we read together) Pew Bible, page 683, OT

SECOND READING 1 Corinthians, 12:3b–13 Pew Bible, page 212, NT

A A reading from 1 Corinthians , chapter twelve.

Paul is helping the Corinthians understand the relationship between our God-given unity and Spirit-created diversity. The Spirit creates the unity of faith and gives all Christians diverse gifts for the common

benefit of all. We need one another's diverse spiritual gifts, because the same Spirit has given them to

each person for the common good.

THE READING BEGINS

A Word of God, word of life.

C Thanks be to God.

THE PRAYER A Let us pray. A God of all creation, all you have made is good, and your love endures forever. You bring forth bread from the earth and fruit from the vine. Nourish us with these gifts, that we might be for the world signs of your gracious presence in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C Amen. GREAT THANKSGIVING P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them to the Lord. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give our thanks and praise. PREFACE It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God. through our Savior Jesus Christ; who, sharing our life, lived among us to reveal your glory and love, that our darkness should give way to your own brilliant light. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

WORDS OF INSTITUTION (Corinthians 11:23-26) P In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. THE LORD'S PRAYER (Matthew 6:9-13) C Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen COMMUNION (John 6:48-50; Acts 2:42) P Come to the banquet, for all is now ready. The assembly may be seated. The bread may be broken for the communion. When giving the bread and cup, the communion ministers say A The body of Christ, given for you. The blood of Christ, shed for you. And each person may respond Amen. LAMB OF GOD (Sing Twice) (John 1:29)

SERVICE SCHEDULES FOR JUNE

Don’t forget to join us in the church yard after service for a

cool glass of lemonade! We hope to see you there.

With most Elon students leaving for the summer, Allied Churches will need more volunteers to run its food pantry. Due to the high number of clients receiving food from us each month, about

8 volunteers are needed every day for the food pantry to operate. As a volunteer, the tasks you

would do include filling out applications and shopping through the pantry with clients. Located

at 206 N Fisher St in downtown Burlington, the food pantry operates from 3:00-5:00pm Mon-day through Friday. If you would like to volunteer, please contact the food services coordinator

Shannon Smith at [email protected] or (336)229-0881 ext.114. We look forward to

serving the community with you! Thank you for your generosity.
