Lives of the Saints St. Aubin or Albinus entered the monastery of Tincillac when a youth and was elected abbot there when he was 35. He became Bishop of Angers (300 km south-west of Paris) in 529. There he was known for his generosity to the sick and indigent, widows and orphans, and for his work in ransoming slaves. He was also remembered for his holiness and the many miracles he is reputed to have performed during and after his lifetime. He died in 554. The abbey of St Aubin in Angers was erected in his memory. St. David is the patron saint of Wales, where he was an abbot and bishop in the sixth century. Several Irish saints, including Maedoc and Aidan, went to study with him at his monasteries in Wales. His monks followed a very strict rule in the spirit of prayer, penance and silence. He himself had studied under St. Paulinus at Cardigan. He later travelled on pilgrimage to Cornwall, Brittany, Ireland and Jerusalem. On his return to Wales he founded many monasteries in his lifetime. He died around 601. St. Chad, also called Ceadda, was a missionary, bishop and healer, who evangelised the regions around central England. The Venerable Bede tells us that St Chad, the youngest of four brothers, who all became monks, were pupils of St Aidan at Lindisfarne. Chad worked tirelessly with his brother Cedd. They established the monastery at Lastingham in Yorkshire. On the death of Cedd in 664 Chad succeeded him as abbot. At the request of King Oswiu Chad was consecrated bishop of Northumbria, with his See at York. Shortly afterwards a dispute arose about this appointment and Chad immediately resigned from the position. The new Archbishop of Canterbury, St Theodore, was so impressed by Chad's humility, that when the bishop of Mercia died, he asked King Oswiu to appoint Chad as the bishop's successor. The King approved and Chad chose Lichfield, where he built a new church and monastery as the seat of his diocese. During the last three years of his life Chad founded a monastery in Lindsey (Lincolnshire) on land given to him by King Wulfhere of Mercia. He died in an outbreak of plague in 673. His relics are enshrined in Bermingham, where the cathedral is named after him. It was the first Catholic cathedral built in England since the Reformation. In 1941 St. Chad's was made a minor basilica by Pope Pius XII on the occasion of its centenary. St. Katherine Drexel an American nun of Austrian origin, Katherine Drexel from a wealthy Philadelphian banking family and inherited a fortune, which she chose to spend on the education, training and spiritual needs of Afro & native Americans. She also founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament to work for the indigenous & black population to which she held a deep devotion. Katherine became only the second native-born American saint after Elizabeth Seton. St. Casimir was the second son of King Casimir IV of Poland. Tutored from childhood by a holy man, Fr. John Dlugosz of Krakow, historian of Poland, he grew up a devout & pious youth. He refused to marry the daughter of Emperor Fredrick III preferring a life of celibacy and penance. In 1479 his father, King Casimir went to Lithuania for five years arranging affairs there, young Casimir was viceroy of Poland, from 1481 - 83 he administered the state with great prudence & justice. He strove to promote peace & the unity of Western Europe. On a journey to Lithuania in 1484 Casimir became ill and died at the court of Grodno & was buried at the chapel of the Blessed Virgin in the cathedral of Vilnius. He was named Patron saint of Poland in 1602. St. Kieran of Saighir was born in Cape Clear, County Cork. He is numbered among the pre-Patrician saints of Ireland. He went to the continent, where he was baptised and later ordained priest and bishop. He returned to his father's area, Ossory, where he lived as a hermit. Disciples soon joined him and Saighir became a well-known community and monastery.
