After the recent suc-cessful launch of the hire cycle sys-

tem at the Metro Rail sta-tions, Anna Nagar will be among the 21 locations in Chennai that will get to operate the new concept of cycle-sharing from Janu-ary 15.

According to an official of the Greater Chennai Corporation’s Zone 5, un-der whose jurisdiction Anna Nagar comes, all works have been complet-ed to set up the cycle shar-ing facility at the Thiru-mangalam Metro Rail Station. He said the facil-ity is being offered through a tie-up with a company called SmartBike, which specialises in public bike (cycle) sharing concept.

“We will be drawing power supply for the cycle sharing facility from the Chennai Metro Rail Lim-ited (CMRL) as a tempo-rary measure and eventu-ally the Tamil Nadu Gen-eration and Distribution Company (TANGEDCO, popular ly known as

TNEB) will take over its maintenance and opera-tion for seven years,” he said. The power supply is required to ensure locking of the cycles and lighting of the facility.

“Apart from Thiruman-galam, the facility would be available at the Anna Nagar Tower (Blue Star), Kandaswamy College (Roundtana), Valliammal School and Shenoy Nagar Metro Rail stations in our zone,” he added.

Not just that people in the neighbourhood would be able to pick up a cycle in other places also. “After seeing some activity at the

Thirumangalam Metro Rail station, I made enqui-ries with the staff there and they said we will also be able to ride a cycle from other places in the neigh-bourhood such as near the Frontier Lifeline Hospital – located closer to Collec-tor Nagar, the Park Road (ONGC complex) and SBOA School. I am really excited about this,” said Roshan, a middle-aged executive in Anna Nagar.

People would also be able to use the cycle shar-ing facility from some lo-cations on Shanthi Colony road and near the Bougain-villea Park.

“The idea behind intro-ducing this concept is to ensure that those who travel by Metro Rail could simply hop on to a cycle using an App and ride them to a feeder point closer to their homes and park them there. To begin with we will be charging Rs 5 per hour and Rs 9 for every 30 minutes thereaf-ter,” said the Greater Chennai Corporation of-ficial. The cycles would also be available for use for longer durations for which the charges would differ based on whether one needs to hire it for a day or month.

Work on constructing storm water drains has begun in many interior streets of Anna Nagar. Previously the Greater Chennai Corporation’s Storm Water Department had undertaken works to construct new storm water drains along many main

roads of the Anna Nagar neighbourhood.

Overall in the past two to three years, the Greater Chennai Corporation has commissions constructing of wider storm water drains along many streets in the neighbourhoods of Mogappair and Anna Nagar leading to frequent digging up and covering of

roads. Now the work has shifted to interior roads.

Presently work is under way to construct a storm water drain in G Block, Second Street, which is located off 11th Main Road in Anna Nagar. “We are undertaking this work in phases in many parts of the neighbourhood. Previ-ously we did have storm water drain in many places. But over the years the pop-ulation in and around Anna Nagar and Mogap-pair has grown multi fold leading to infrastructural stress. Now we are focus-sing on having broad storm water drains so that there is no flooding in interior streets during heavy rains,” said an official attached to the Storm Water Depart-ment of the Ambattur Di-vision of the Greater Chen-nai Corporation.

Asked when these works would be completed as residents in many areas

have been complaining about inconvenience caused to them due to fre-quent digging up of roads, the official, who requested anonymity citing service rules, said, “We are trying our best to expedite the process. Sometimes the contractors are not able to execute the project within the specified timeframe due to various inevitable factors. That is when the delay happens. But we have it as our priority to finish these works at the earliest and are working towards that goal.”

While a section of resi-dents complained that they were hassled due to the ongoing civic works, an-other section felt that such inconveniences have to be overcome for the larger public good. “There is no way the civic authorities can construct a storm wa-ter drain without digging up roads”, said a resident.

At a time when many key junctions in the Anna Nagar and Mogappair neighbourhoods do not have traffic signals leaving to congestion in vehicular move-ment and chaos, a huge traffic signal equipment and damaged signboard have been junked un-der the Anna Nagar-Thiruman-galam flyover. Inquiries revealed that the equipment has been lying there for many months now with the authorities concerned not taking any action to retrieve and repair them. According to locals, the traffic signal equipment was believed to have been uprooted in an accident and was removed and dumped beneath the flyover at the Thirumangalam junction (near the water tank). “Or we are not sure if was damaged during cy-clone Vardah that struck Chennai early last year,” said a shopkeep-er in the vicinity. From then on it has remained there being exposed

to vagaries of nature through summer and rainfall.

“This is indeed appalling that no one has bothered to have this equipment, which would surely cost thousands of rupees, re-moved from this site and re-paired. Ideally the Chennai City Traffic Police should have initi-ated measures to take it away from the site and get it repaired but they seem to have turned a blind eye. In any case, the under-belly of a flyover is no place to junk public property like this,” commented Chandra, a young office goer, who was waiting the Thirumangalam bus stop.

At some places the traffic po-lice personnel are manually managing the movement of ve-hicles. Instead of buying new traffic signal equipment, which would obviously take months because of the usual bureau-cratic red tape, they could have repaired this signal equipment ,” said a commuter.

The statistical piece of information that there had been no

Dolphin academy swimmers corner glory

SDAT Dolphin Swimming Academy, Mogappair bagging 26 gold, 28 silver and 23 bronze and lifted the overall championship trophy with 573 points (boys 271 pts) and (girls 302 pts) in the 31st South Zone selection aquatic championship held in Chen-nai on Dec 8 and 9. They also won the Group Championship: Gr 4 Boys with 55 points; Gr 6 Boys (34 pts); Gr 3 Girls (111 pts) and Gr 6 Girls (69 pts). K Akshita with 24 points and S Madhushree with 28 points won the GR 3 girls and GR 6 girls indi-vidual tiles respectively. The swimmers are coached by KT Muraleedharan and Mrs Rani Muraleed-haran, NIS coaches.

Chennai Metro will soon offer its commuters a facility to book a ride through its mobile app, for travelling to areas around stations.

According to officials of Chennai Metro Rail Lim-ited (CMRL), they have tied up with a firm to offer the service. "The (firm’s) icon for this service will be created in the Chennai Metro Rail mobile app and when commuters touch the icon, it will direct them to the firm's vehicle book-

ing page and they can hire a car. The vehicle will pick them up from a station and drop off at their respective destination, which should be within 5 km in and around the station.

The prices are expected to be nominal and fixed in the range of Rs 15- Rs 20. Currently, there are share auto services in many placed including Thiru-mangalam and share car services in few places.

Commuters are charged Rs 10 and Rs 15 for share
