As many as six wards in Ambattur and Anna Nagar – Zones 7 and
8 of the Corporation of Chen-nai – have been declared as ‘Open Defecation Free Areas’ under the Swacch Bharath campaign, which aims among others achieving a clean sani-tation practice.
Towards achieving this goal, several new public toilets have been placed in many parts of Annanagar, Mogap-pair and Ambattur, which has already fetched good results in sanitation.
“In zone 7- Ambattur- wards 91, 92 and in zone 8- Anna Nagar- 95, 99, 103 and 108 have been announced as Open Defecation Free Areas. Public are requested to contact their zonal officers if they find
anybody defecating openly. The contact numbers of the officers are put up in the of-ficial website of Corporation and they are also encouraged to contact them for any other feedback,” said a Corporation official from Ambattur.
“Our initiative is to build a better synergy between the government and public so that we can attain many social goals. The Corporation of Chennai is in the process of creating awareness among the people on the necessity to use toilets. It has also obtained self declaration from the residents, teachers, students and others saying that they will use toi-lets and would not indulge in open defecation,” explains the official. “It is good that Cor-poration has come up with many toilets which have got the facility of automatic clean-
ing. Based on the duration of the usage of the toilets, water gets dispensed and cleans them automatically. It is a very good system through which we could keep our streets neat and clean,” says Ragunathan, a resident of Annanagar West.
“Though open defecation is not seen widely in An-nanagar, still a few people uri-nate in public places. They do not hesitate to do that. Corpo-ration has to conduct a mass campaign to advice them to use the public toilet system. Even now many people have stigma in using public toilets. Maintenance is the problem. The newly built toilets are very compact and there is no need for any manual involvement in cleaning and they have to be put up in every 500 me-ters,” says Kalaimani, a senior citizen.

Of late, the Depart-ment of Posts is wit-nessing a signifi-cant increase in the number of postal savings bank accounts opened in the State.
A c c o r d i n g to the Postmaster General , Chennai City Region, the total 19 lakh postal savings bank accounts were opened during this financial year in Tamil Nadu, 5.5 lakh ac-counts were opened in the last one month.
There are distinct advantages
in postal savings ac-counts. Here, people
can have a mini-mum balance of Rs 50, while it is Rs 5,000 or even more in banks.
Another ad-vantage was that
cus tomers ge t ATM cards that can
be used in post office ATMs or any bank ATM
to withdraw cash. There is no restrictions on the
number of transactions nor do they charge for it. There are a total of 97 postal ATMs — at all Head Post Offices — in the State.

The closure of a ‘Perma-nent Enrolment Centre’ for obtaining Aadhaar card in Unit 20, Division 91 – Eri Scheme in Mogappair has put local residents to incon-venience. Now they have to go to the Corporation of Chennai office in Ambat-tur to enrol for getting the Aadhaar card, which for all practical purposes has be-come mandatory though the Supreme Court had said it cannot be made compulsory.
Residents say the centre should not have been abruptly closed. Many of them had already gone to the centre on Eri Scheme Road and given their bio-metric finger print and IRIS for enrolment but they did not receive the Aadhaar card due to some technical defects. Now even such residents have to go all the way to Ambattur to rectify the defects and get their respective Aad-haar cards.
“When Central and State governments making Aadhaar compulsory for almost all transactions, it is ridiculous that instead of creating more awareness and facilities to get the card they had closed down the centre. Now we have to go to Ambattur,” complains Ravi, a resident of Marai-malai Adigalar Street.
Girirajan, a relative of Ramalakshmi, a non-resi-dent Indian, who hails from Mogappair East, said,
go to Ambattur to get the card done. We witness heavy rush over there. I never wanted this card but government is pushing for it indirectly. Even the pro-posed finance bill says it is mandatory to file income tax returns. It would be better if they reopen the centres and strictly follow the appointment time” said Sugumar, a senior citizen.
Aadhaar Enrolment Centre ClosEd in Eri sChEME
“When Ramalakshmi was in India in January, realis-ing the importance of Aad-haar, she applied for it. She had to stand in a long queue for more than six hours. The token system was not effective as they did not follow the order. She furnished all her de-tails perfectly and bio met-ric registration was also done. Despite that her card got rejected. Now when she comes to India next time, she has to register again at Ambattur.”
Even the centre (since closed) on Eri Scheme Road was not perfect. “Two months ago when we went to the centre on Eri Scheme Road to apply for the card, they told us to come at 3 pm and even
after 6 pm they did not call us and made us wait with-out informing the reason. After that even when our turn came, the employee was getting details from his friends and when my wife asked about it he said he had come from Ambattur office just to get his friend’s work done and not for the public. My wife questioned his attitude. After that, he took our biometric prints and IRIS. However, now we find that our Aadhaar has been rejected citing some technical defect. We suspect the employee did that deliberately,” said a resident who lives in Ori Salai, requesting anonym-ity. “Instead of regulating it properly they had closed the centre, now we have to

Veteran Tamil film actor Nasser says it has been a long-time desire that Nadigar San-gam — the South Indian Ar-tistes Association — has a building of its own. He is glad that the foundation for the construction of a new building has been laid here. The founda-tion was laid here on Friday.
“Ever since we came into power, it has been our dream to construct this building. Even though we were repeatedly asked about the building by our
opposition, we didn’t say any-thing because we knew this would happen. We wanted our actions to speak,” Nasser, who is also the President of the Nadigar Sangam, said.
On Friday, actors Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth laid the foundation stone for a new building here.
Actors Vishal and Karthi have jointly contributed Rs 10 crore towards the construction of the building.
“We will complete the
building, despite all odds. With the revenue generated from this building, we will make sure the lives of theatre artists are im-proved. We will also take care of the well-being of all the se-nior actors,” Vishal added. Nasser said the building will be constructed without taking loans.
“We are wary about the questions that will be raised against us. Hence, we decided to construct this building with our own money,” Nasser said.

Skipping the gym in fa-vour of vegging out is rare-ly ever a wise move, but it turns out that there may be something to forgoing your next workout to lay down, if you’re lying down in a bathtub. that’s at least ac-cording to a recent research, which suggests that taking a hot bath may boost some of the same health benefits as exercise.
The good news comes from a recent study out of the National Centre for
Sport and Exercise Medi-cine at the University of Loughborough in the UK.
For the study, the re-searchers recruited 14 men and assigned them to either an hour of moderate cy-cling or an hour-long soak in a 104-degree bath. (Be-cause the group was small and all-male, the results still need to be validated with larger studies involving both men and women, but this is a starting point.)
Unsurprisingly, the cy-
clists burned more calories, but bathers still burned about 140 calories on aver-age - about what they would have used on a half-hour walk. More interestingly, the researchers measured blood sugar for the study participants for the next 24 hours and found the two groups both had improved ability to control blood sugar, an important mea-sure of metabolic health.
In fact, the bathers’ peak blood sugar levels after eat-ing were about 10% lower than the peak blood sugar for the cyclists, which shows promise for using “passive heating” as a means of helping control metabolic disorders like type 2 diabe-tes.
The bathers also experi-enced an anti-inflammatory
response like the effect seen in people after they exer-cise, which is also promis-ing, since people with chronic disease tend to have chronic inflammation.
Steve Faulkner, lead au-thor of the study, writes that the research backs up previ-ous findings that suggest frequent saunas can reduce risks for strokes and heart a t tacks and that regular hot baths can help improve blood pressure.
This is still ear-ly s tage re -search, but the authors write that soaking in hot water might be helpful for people who could use the
health benefits of exercise but struggle to follow a fit-ness regimen.
Of course, the results should not be a reason to stop exercising and just take a bath instead. But if you’re looking for an excuse to take a soak, go ahead and do it for your health.

The city police caught two persons with demon-etised currencies worth nearly one crore rupees just two days ahead of the deadline available for NRIs for exchanging defunct currencies of Rs 500 and Rs 1000.
It was a patrol team that noticed something amiss about a black car in which the duo was travelling up and down the first main road at Shenoy Nagar, Aminjikarai, on Wednes-day evening. On suspicion the cops tried to stop them but they tried to speed away. They were however caught after a short chase.
The police seized Rs 1.02 crore - Rs 86 lakh in Rs 1,000 currencies and Rs 16 lakh in Rs 500 denomi-nation - in a black bag in the car’s rear seat.
During interrogation, the men, Ramesh and Vi-jaykumar, were said to have told police that the money belonged to a busi-nessman of Tambaram. They were to meet a broker and exchange the curren-cies near a school at She-noy Nagar.
Interrogation revealed they were into sand and g ravel bus iness. Ra-mesh of Salem resides at Saligramam and Vijayku-mar of Pollachi, stays at Mogappair.
A case has been reg-istered and police have launched a hunt for the broker and the business-man. In an earlier incident, three men were waiting in a van to meet a resident of JJ Nagar to exchange de-funct notes when they were nabbed by a patrol team.

In a bid to dissuade residents from dumping garbage on the corner of the Seethakathi Salai – T S Krishna Nagar turn-ing, the Corporation of Chennai has put up ban-ners appealing to them not to dump waste at the spot. The acuteness of the problem of open dumping can be gauged from the fact that the civic body has put up not one banner but three banners at the same location urging residents to desist from discarding their household waste at the spot besides placing a barricade.
"Announcement: Do not dump garbage here. If you violate, stringent ac-tion will be taken against you," warn the three ban-

commercial waste at this site. Since the house near the corner appears unoc-cupied, people had in the past dumped garbage with impunity here," says Ramu Kannan, a local resident.
The dumping of gar-bage created problems for the conservancy workers engaged by the contractor assigned by the Corpora-tion of Chennai to under-take the clean up job too. "If garbage is deposited in designated bins and ar-eas, it makes our jobs a lot easier when we come around in a tricycle to col-lect garbage. But when they are randomly thrown at different places, it becomes difficult to keep track of all places and clear the waste.
Being a corner area, people easily dumped their wastes here until recently," says Kondaiah, a conservancy worker.
"We used to suffer from mosquito bites and had to brave the stink generated by the garbage in the past at this place. Finally we represented to the Cor-poration of Chennai who put up these banners warn-ing against open dump-ing. This has helped to a certain extent. Still some debris has been dumped here," says Kamlesh, a shop keeper.
Nonetheless the overall appeal has worked in cur-tailing garbage dumping at this corner to a large extent.
