The Greater Chennai City Police has placed iron barricades literally fenc-ing of the bus shelter at the Metropolitan Transport Corpo-ration (MTC) bus stop in Ayy-appan Temple in Anna Nagar causing discomfort and confu-sion among commuters.

The access to the bus shelter has been literally cut off due to the placing of the barricades, which actually eat into the road space as well, a few weeks ago. Commuters say that because of the barricading they are not aware if the bus stop is opera-tional or not. And if the bus stop has been shifted to a new location, where exactly is it.

“These barricades have been installed here for the past few weeks. I am clueless about the reason why there were placed here in the first place. Some commuters, with whom I in-quired, said that the barricades were placed to prevent two-wheeler riders as well as auto rickshaw drivers from parking their vehicles near the bus stop. But this defies logic as what the barricades have done ulti-mately is that the access for commuters to the bus shelter has been cut off,” said Sami-kannu, a regular bus com-muter from the Anna Nagar neighbourhood.

    Commuters pointed out

that the bus stop has been popular among people who visit the Ayyappan Temple and now incidentally is the season for Ayyappa devotees, heading to Sabarimala on pilgrimage, to visit the temple in large numbers.

There are some commuters like Revathi, who are confused by the presence of barricades at the bus stop. “These barri-cades give us an impression as if this bus stop is no longer operations – in the sense that maybe the Metropolitan Trans-port Corporation has shifted the stopping for buses on this route from here to elsewhere. But then there is no official an-nouncement in this regard so

far. Many commuters who come here actually move out believing that the bus stop has been shifted out,” she said.

Commenting further on the issue she pointed out that these days it is the elderly and the poor who travel by buses, apart from some office goers and students heading to schools and colleges. “They will obvi-ously find it difficult to walk further without knowing if the bus stop has been shifted. Both the Greater Chennai City Po-lice and the Metropolitan Transport Corporation au-thorities must come clear on why the barricades have been placed here and remove them,” she added.

five healthy lifestyle habits will help you live longer

In a good news to middle-aged people, researchers have found that maintain-ing five healthy habits may increase years lived free of type 2 diabetes, cardio-vascular disease and cancer.

According to the study, published in the journal The BMJ, a healthy diet, regu-lar exercise, healthy body weight, moder-ate drinking, and no tobacco in the mid-dle-age may help people live longer.

“Previous studies found that following a healthy lifestyle improves life expec-tancy and reduces risk of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular ailments and cancer. But few studies looked at the effects of lifestyle factors on life expec-tancy free from such diseases,” says a study.

The study provides strong evidence that following a healthy lifestyle can substan-tially extend the years a person lives dis-ease-free. Women who practiced four-five healthy habits at age 50 lived an average of 34.4 more years free of diabetes, car-diovascular diseases and cancer, com-pared with 23.7 healthy years among women who practiced none.

Men practicing four-five healthy habits at age 50 lived 31.1 years free of chronic disease, compared with 23.5 years among men who practiced none.

According to the study, men who were heavy smokers, and men and women with obesity had the lowest disease-free life expectancy. Given the high cost of chron-ic disease treatment, public policies to promote a healthy lifestyle by improving food and physical environments would help reduce healthcare costs and improve quality of life.

make a comebackAfter a gap of nearly a year, air-conditioned

buses of the Metropolitan Transport Corpora-tion (MTC) have made a comeback. MTC has procured 48 new A/C buses. Of these, two began operations from Monday on routes 91 (Tambaram-Thiruvanmiyur) and 570 (CMBT-Siruseri).

Tickets cost Rs 15-45 and Rs 15-60 per per-son on these routes respectively. The minimum fare has been cut from Rs 28 to Rs 15.

Rotting garbage strewn all over near a flood carrier that falls between two wards of the Greater Chen-nai Corporation in Karnan Street in Mogappair West is causing hardship to local residents. Ironically the place where the garbage, including large quantities of household kitchen waste which rots easily, is being dumped routinely is locat-ed next to a church. Be-

sides, many people use the route to go to a popular temple that is located only a few hundred metres away from the spot.

“People who pass by this area cover their noses. They can’t even withstand the assaulting odour that wafts in the air for less than a minute. Then imagine our plight because our house is located close to this site. We are forced to live amidst this filth for 24 hours a day without any

respite,” lamented a local resident, who did not wish to be identified.

The resident com-plained that people from far off places were rou-tinely dumping waste gen-erated in households at the spot on a daily basis. “I have angrily confronted some people who come here to throw their house-hold wastes, sometimes even abusing them out of sheer frustration but to no avail. They justify their ac-tions saying others are also throwing garbage and therefore they too were emulating it. They don’t understand our frustration at all. We continue to live under unhygienic condi-tions because of that,” he added.

Not just this. The resi-dents also complained that the garbage collectors en-gaged by contractors of the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion do not undertake con-servancy work at the spot on a regular basis. “When we question the conser-vancy workers, they try to pass the buck saying the area does not fall under their jurisdiction. cally, some conservancy workers claim that this spot falls within Ward 91 of the Greater Chennai Corporation while some others claim that it falls under Ward 90. The rea-son for this is because this unauthorised garbage dumping spot falls at the centre of Karnan Salai separated by a culvert,” a resident said. People who come to the church that is located adjacent to the garbage dumping spot also complain that the stink raised by the rotting wastes affects their mood.

Poor workmanship exposed in eB Road ParkBy N Rathi Chithra

Poor workmanship and use of sub-standard mate-rial in the construction of the EB Road Park has come to the fore within a few years of opening of the facility for public use in Mogappair East.

The park, built and maintained by the Greater Chennai Corporation, has two entrances. People can access it from the Ori Salai end, which is a main bus route road, as well as from the Electricity Board Salai (or EB Salai), which is a residential neighbourhood road. Park users have not begun to see the impact of poor workmanship as well as the use of inferior qual-ity materials in construct-ing the pathway leading to the entrance of the park from the EB Road side.

    In August last year, M o ga p p a i r M a i l h a d through its columns high-

lighted how a newly con-structed toilet and a por-tion of the compound wall had cracked up making it difficult for people to use the facility.

Now regular park users have brought to the notice of Mogappair Mail that similar cracks have devel-oped along the steps lead-ing to the park entrance from the EB Road end and

on the tiles laid therein to facilitate parking of two-wheelers on an elevated platform, besides cases of some tiles coming off.

“We are indeed alarmed that cracks are widening and tiles are coming off within a few years of the park being inaugurated. These are all big civil works involving a huge cost to the exchequer. We can under-

stand if the tiles were com-ing off after a decade or so but it is shocking that they are coming off so soon. We wonder what would be the status of the park some years from now. It is obvi-ous that no quality check was done by officials who cleared the work,” said Pandian, a resident of Mogappair East, and a regular visitor to the EB Road Park.

Park users said that it appeared that the contrac-tor, who executed the con-struction work, has not used the right quality as well as proportion of con-struction materials. “If he had used the right quality and quantity of cement, sand and other materials, the cracks wouldn’t have developed so soon. I hope that those responsible for this are held accountable,” said another park user, who preferred not be named.
