The neighbourhoods of Mogappair East and West, Anna Nagar, Nolambur and its sur-roundings are abundant with vehicles that have been aban-doned by owners. Passing by any locality in these neighbourhoods one can spot an assortment of vehicles ranging from motorcy-cles and scooters to cars and jeeps to auto rickshaws and lor-ries lying parked for months to-gether with none coming for-ward to claim them.

In fact, Mogappair Mail itself has during various periods in the last three years highlighted about the menace of abandoned vehi-cles occupying crucial parking space on the road fringes and in open grounds with some of them even being used by anti-socials as cover to drink liquor.

However, now there is a solu-tion at hand to track the owners of these vehicles. Transport policy experts and activists in the Mogappair neighbourhood like Ragavendar Sankaran say that the owners of such vehicles can be tracked by logging on to the website www.vahan.nic.in and entering the registration number of the vehicles. “This is a Gov-ernment administered website linked to the Road Transport Office and helps in easy tracking of vehicles. All you have to do is log on to the website and on the

home page itself enter the regis-tration number of the abandoned vehicle and the captcha before hitting the search button. And you will have all details at your finger tips,” said Ragavendar Sankaran.

According to him, the website will give you the details of the owner’s name, the date of regis-tration of the vehicle, the make of the vehicle, its chasis number (partial), the engine number (partial) and even if the vehicle is insured or not. It even provides the vehicle’s pollution record and the Regional Transport Office where the vehicle was originally registered. “Using this informa-tion, the law enforcing authori-ties can reach the owner and ask him to remove the vehicle,” he added.

This way the problem of clearing abandoned vehicles can be resolved to a large extent. However, when asked about this, a police officer working at a sta-tion within the jurisdiction of the Anna Nagar Deputy Commis-sioner of Police said the Vahan website was helpful only to some extent. “We once tracked the owner of the vehicle registered in 1998 based on the details on the website. But he told us that he had sold the vehicle some 10 years ago. We couldn’t locate the new owner because he had not transferred ownership at the RTO,” said the officer.

Conwoman arrested for robbery

A 45-year-old woman was arrested by the Aminjikarai police for stealing money and valuables from patients and visitors of Arignar Anna Govt Hospital of Indian Medicine in Arumbakkam after diverting their attention.

The woman, identified as Shanthi of Chetpet, targeted women patients and robbed their valu-ables, said police. On Wednesday, Shanthi robbed a half-sovereign chain from an 85-year-old woman from Kallakurichi and Rs 600 from another woman. Atempting yet another robbery, visitors at the hospital detained her and handed her over to police. Police are investigating if she was involved in other offences.

Water pilferage: Metrowater gets tough

on violatorsWhen the city is reeling under the water

scarcity and the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (Metro water) is scrambling to augment supply, many residents have resorted to pilfering water from pipelines.

It is learnt that it has come to light during the random raids that many residents have been pilfering water using motor pump. Because of this, other residents on the street could not get sufficient water. The corporation had warned the building owners and disconnected the water connections. Meanwhile, the State-run utility is mulling to increase the penalty against those

stealing water. The Metro Water is empowered to disconnect water connection for three months and besides paying the fine, the building owners should pay charges to get the connection back after the passage of three months. For illegal tapping of water, the fine is Rs 10,000 for resi-dential buildings while it is Rs 20,000 in the case of commercial buildings.

The concrete road on MG R S a l a i i n Mogappair East In-

dustrial Estate has literally vanished. Instead what motorists find is a bumpy mud road that is filled with rubble. The MGR Salai connects parts of Mogap-pair East – such as Valay-apathi Salai and Maraima-lai Adigalar Salai – with the Padikuppam Road and Padi Pudunagar and on-wards to Rail Nagar and the Maduravoyal High Road.

“This is an apology for a road, if I could say that. Look at how uneven this surface is. How could any-one even try and ride a motorcycle through this bumpy stretch without skidding. I am not exag-gerating but the experience of riding a bike on this road is similar riding on a hilly terrain,” fumed Siv-an, a middle-aged office goer, who depends on MGR Salai to reach Koy-ambedu on weekdays.

given way at many places due to regular wear and tear caused by movement of an assortment of vehi-cles including heavy tank-

ers and lorries. However, now after the road was dug up during the execution of some civic works a few weeks ago, all that is left is only a muddy stretch with huge half-buried stones with protruding sharp edges.

“More than a fortnight ago, when I was driving my car I heard a loud noise and got down from my vehicle. On examining the car I found that the sharp edge of a half-buried stone had presumably hit the vehi-cle’s underbelly. Not just that since the road is bumpy traffic snarls are being caused and there is increasing dust pollution as well. I have now stopped taking this road and in-stead am going via Bazaar Road and Thirumangalam, which is a detour of over three kilometres. But that is the only option,” said Anand N, a resident of Mogappair East.

Locals said that with elections around, the au-thorities have not come forward to relay the road with blue metal and tar. “Looks like we have to put up with this battered stretch for some more months,” lamented Aru-mugam, a local resident.

After the super success of the digitally restored version of Karnan, Sivaji Ganesan’s 1972 romantic hit Vasantha Maligai is all set to be re-released all over Tamil Nadu soon. Commuters upset over hike in Metro rail parking rates

A hike in the rates for monthly parking vehicles at select Metro Rail sta-tions including two in Anna Nagar has left regu-lar commuters fuming.From April 1 the parking pass rates in seven Chennai Metro Rail stations includ-ing Thirumangalam, Anna Nagar (East), Guindy, Meenambakkam, Ashok Nagar, Mannadi and Nan-ganalur Road were hiked. As per this for the monthly pass to park bikes at these stations will be Rs 500, which is double the rate that was charged earlier.

Likewise, the minimum night halt charge per night was increased to Rs 50 and for round the clock parking the monthly pass rates were increased to Rs 1,500.

A cross-section of com-muters from the neighbour-hoods of Mogappair East and West and Anna Nagar felt that such hike in bike parking rates will work at the cross purposes with the initiative of transport au-thorities to promote public transport as a favoured mode of commute. "Al-ready the Metro Rail tick-ets in Chennai are priced much higher than the rates charged in other cities such as New Delhi and Benga-luru. Now the increase in parking fee will add to our commute cost. This may actually deter more people from using Metro Rail to

Asked about the need to revise the parking rates now, a caretaker at the Anna Nagar East Metro Rail Station said, “We noticed that some people who did not take the Met-ro Rail station were regu-larly parking their bikes here. I think the hiked rates would discourage such people from parking bikes here and instead encourage Metro Rail commuters to make use of the facility.”
