Harold BrooksPresident and CEO

A Message from the Chairman and CEO

We are very excited about the coming year and the work we have ahead of us to make the BayArea the most resilient community in the nation. The American Red Cross Bay Area Chapterentered new territory this past year in transforming the way we operate—establishing a neworganization that is more efficient and able to serve our mission as smartly as possible.

At home, we rolled out Ready Neighborhoods, a four-year plan to create disaster-ready communitiesthroughout the Bay Area. With publicity, events, and training, we aim to ensure individuals will beprepared to take care of themselves and their neighbors in the event of an emergency. We are alsotraining organizations to mobilize as shelters. The initiative is in partnership with PG&E.

We have endured constant changes in the past 12 months as the Red Cross consolidated manysupport functions and retooled our Health & Safety program offerings to make them morecompetitive and turn them into a reliable source of income for the Red Cross.

It has not been simple or easy, but I am proud of the group of amazing people in this room–as wellas our nearly 2,000 volunteers, our employees, our colleagues in the other three chapters in ourregion, and our partners for weathering these changes with grace and good humor.

There is guaranteed more change on the way but I do believe these changes will help us to betterdeliver on the promise of the Mission of the Red Cross: “to prevents and alleviate human suffering inthe face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.”

We need all of you to continue to help us to ensure the Bay Area Chapter and the entire Gatewayto the Golden State Region continues to lead the nation with four strong chapters who deliver the best disaster relief services and innovative disaster readiness programs that set the bar for other communities.

As we reflect on the past year, we want to express our gratitude to the volunteers, donors, andpartners who make the work of the Red Cross possible. In the coming year, we will continue toreach out to Bay Area communities, ensuring we are all ready for the next disaster.

You Make It Possible

Our work is made possible by our 4,021 volunteers.

The American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter provides vital services to the Bay Areacommunities 365 days a year—from responding to home fires in local neighborhoodsto teaching first aid and CPR to community groups.

We’re able to provide these services thanks to a corps of 4,012 dedicated volunteers and the generosity of our donors. The American Red Cross puts these donations togood use. We are proud to tell donors that we invest an average of 91 cents of everydollar in humanitarian services and programs, well above the industry standard.

How do we do it? By practicing what we preach: preparedness. We train our volunteers. We plan ahead for the types of disasters that strike in our community. And we trainindividuals, businesses and community groups so that they too can be prepared.

The American Red Cross of Bay Area Chapter serves the communities of Alameda,Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Solano counties. In this report, which covers fiscal year 2012 (July 1, 2011 — June 30, 2012), you will learn about how we help our neighbors down the street, across the country and around the world.

House Fires to Earthquakes

Telegraph Avenue Apartment Fire

We’re ready to respond to disasters seven days a week, 365 days a year in ourcommunity, providing shelter, food, clothing and emotional support at no cost to those in need. The Bay Area Chapter is part of a nationwide network of Red Cross regions that work together to respond to large-scale relief efforts.

San Bruno Recovery and Resource Center OpensThe Bay Area Chapter continues to support those affected by the San Bruno Explosionon September 9, 2010. As immediate needs were being met, the Red Cross beganworking with the City of San Bruno and key partners to establish the San Bruno Recovery and Resource Center. The 4,200-square-foot center, located on San Mateo Avenue opened July 1, 2011 and is still open.

Local ResponsesThe most common disaster our Red Cross volunteers respond to are home fires. On average, the Chapter responds to a home fire every other day. Although these fires don’t typically make the news as hurricanes or other large-scale events do, they are devastating for those who have suddenly lost their homes, possessions and sense of security.

In fiscal year 2012, the Bay Area Chapter assisted 1,066 community members/families affected by fires and other local disasters.

The Bay Area Chapter also teaches families, organizations, and corporations how to be prepared for emergencies through free educational presentations. Last year 102,186 people attended community disaster education and preparedness programs.

Preparing for the UnexpectedEvery year, the Bay Area Chapter teaches people the lifesaving skills they need to protect themselves and their families, including first aid, CPR and water safety.

We offer these trainings in multiple ways: online training, traditional classroom settings and full-service courses where we bring the training to your workplace or organization.

Last year, 54,205 individuals learned critical skills through Red Cross courses:• 28,263 people enrolled in first aid/CPR/AED• 24,347 people enrolled in water safety/aquatics• 1,595 people enrolled in other health and safety courses

Serving the Military, Their Families and Veterans

Connecting with Military

The Red Cross Bay Area Chapter gives support to active-duty military members, National Guard and Reserve members, veterans and their families. We provide pre-deployment briefings, called ‘Get to Know Us Before You Need Us,’ and connect families with needed resources when their loved ones are deployed.

Deployed service members also count on us to deliver emergency messages, such asnotification of an illness or death in the family. Military families rely on these verifiedcommunications, which help commanders decide when to grant leave. We also providesupport for the sick and wounded at military and veterans hospitals and assistance inobtaining emergency financial support.

During FY12, the Chapter:• Briefed 9,920 families through the ‘Get to Know Us Before You Need Us’ program• Provided 770 services to military members, veterans and families, including emergency communications

The Red Cross partnered with Pitney Bowes, a mail stream technology company, to collect and distribute holiday cards for American service members, veterans, and their families in the United States and around the world. In the Bay Area more than two dozen volunteers help sort, bundle, box, and deliver 12,000 cards to military members, veterans, and their families.

Blood—Making Sure It’s AvailableWe supported the efforts of the American Red Cross Northern California BloodServices Region, which processes, tests, and safeguards blood collected from donors in communities in Alameda and Contra Costa counties and distributes nearly 65,000 units of lifesaving blood to 20 hospitals.

As an American Red Cross youthvolunteer in the Bay Area, Monique Tran did not know that one day she might come to rely on the services the organization provides to members of the military. Army Specialist Tran was one of 300 military service members and their families in a Red Cross pre-deployment briefing in advance of an upcoming deployment to Afghanistan.

Local Efforts, Global Reach

Childhood Friends Reunite

As part of a worldwide humanitarian network, the Bay Area Chapter works to deliverinternational humanitarian aid in the wake of disasters; prevent disease and teachpreparedness; reconnect families separated by armed conflict; and educate the publicabout International Humanitarian Law.

Here in the Bay Area Chapter, we —• Enrolled 520 people in International and Humanitarian Law and other courses• Provided 20 international tracing services

The American Red Cross was one of the largest private, international contributors to the Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami response, raising more than $312 million. More than $30 million in donations to the American Red Cross came from the generous donors throughout the Bay Area, Monterey Bay Area, Santa Cruz County, and Silicon Valley Chapters.

Responding to Community NeedsIn 2012, 48 Red Cross Clubs operated in local elementary, junior high, high schools, and colleges. In all, we had 1,750 youth volunteers across the Bay Area bringing the Red Cross mission to the next generation.

Another major community outreach program this year was PG&E Ready Neighborhoods, a four-year plan to create disaster-ready communities throughout the Bay Area. PG&E donated $2.5 million to this initiative in March, which will beused in education and awareness campaigns throughout the Bay Area and Northern California.

When Gunter Ullmann fled Nazi Germany for Shanghai almost 75 years ago, he thought it was the last time he would see his childhood friend Elfriede Hubner.

With help from the Red Cross, Ullmann, a 64-year San Francisco resident and Hubner, who lives in Schwabisch Hall, a little more than one hour’s drive from where the two grew up, had a chance to share a lifetime worth of memories and meet each other’s families in Germany.

The reunion, which has been 10 years inthe making, started with a tracing requestplaced at the American Red Cross’ EasternMassachusetts Chapter.

Across the Country

2012

Through a network of more than 500 chapters, 36 blood services regions and a presence on military installations across the country, the American Red Cross helps people when they need it most: when disaster strikes; when a hospital patient is in need of lifesaving blood; when a military family needs emergency assistance; and when people want to learn the skills needed to protect themselves and their family.

A Steady Presence in the StormEvery year the Red Cross helps tens of thousands of people affected by disasters in the U.S. In addition to helping the survivors of thousands of home fires each year, the Red Cross is there for people affected by floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires and other events. Red Cross workers provide critical food and shelter, but they are also there to give emotional support when people need it most.

The arrival of Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee in late summer 2011 called for an enormous Red Cross response that would eventually cover more than a dozen states along the East Coast and into New England. The Red Cross mobilized nearly every emergency response vehicle east of the Rocky Mountains, moved tens of thousands of prepackaged meals into affected areas and deployed disaster workers.

Multiple states were ravaged by wildfires in fiscal year 2012, including Texas, Colorado,New Mexico, Montana and Utah. In each case the Red Cross provided shelter, meals and emotional support to residents as they waited for word on the fate of their homes.

Working with partners is critical in large disaster relief operations such as these. During last year’s tropical storms and wildfires, the Red Cross worked with volunteers from partner organizations such as AmeriCorps NCCC, the Southern Baptist Convention,Medical Reserve Corps and the Salvation Army to support sheltering and feeding effortsfor thousands of affected residents.

The Red Cross has made a concerted effort to strengthen its partnerships and improveits capacity to respond to disasters. One of the strongest ongoing partnerships at the Red Cross is with W.W. Grainger Inc., which helped develop the Ready When the Time Comes program. Now in its tenth year, the program has trained more than 13,000employees from 460 businesses and organizations in 52 cities to be Red Cross disaster volunteers. Over the past two years, the number of trained volunteers has doubled and the program has been established in all critical disaster zones across the country.

In the wake of Hurricane Irene, Red Crossvolunteers unload cleanup supplies for distributionto the residents of Rodanthe, N.C.

Page 9: m37240135_bayarea2012annualreport1

Caring for Military Families and Veterans For more than 130 years, the Red Cross has provided critical services to service members, veterans and their families. As times have changed, the Red Cross has adapted to meet evolving needs—providing training and workshops, handling emergency communications, and working at military installations and hospitals around the world.

As service members return from deployment, many realize that coming home doesn’t always go as smoothly as expected. To help ease this transition, the Red Cross offers Reconnection Workshops, presented by Walmart. This series of workshops, facilitated by licensed and specially trained Red Cross mental health volunteers, focuses on topics such as communicating clearly; exploring stress and trauma; identifying depression; relating to children; and working through anger.

The Red Cross also provides services for patients in military and VA hospitals. With help from a grant from the U.S. Department of Defense, the Red Cross distributed more than 240,000 comfort items last year—including calling cards, small games and snacks—at hospitals and medical facilities for wounded service members, veterans and their families.

Through a new partnership with the Wounded Warrior Project beginning in January 2012, the Red Cross distributed more than 1,200 transitional care packs to injured or ill service members in military hospitals in Afghanistan, Djibouti, Germany and Kuwait.

the public sent in 1.4 million cards for distribution to service members, their families and veterans around the world, bringing holiday cheer to those far from home.

Red Cross Training Saves Lives

AED, water safety and other training by updating courses, providing instruction in new areas and using the latest technology to help the public be prepared for emergencies. The Red Cross is leading the way in using the emerging power of digital technology to get information to people at the right place and time, launching its free First Aid app for iPhone and Android devices in June 2012. The First Aid app gives people instant access to information on handling everyday emergencies, and was met with rave reviews.

Last year, the Red Cross trained more than 250,000 lifeguards and lifeguard managers, protecting swimmers and bathers at pools, waterparks and waterfronts across the nation and on military installations overseas.

updates instruction based on new science, research and best practices. In January 2012, the Red Cross released an updated Lifeguard Program, which features modern graphics, video streaming and other digital options for the student guards. It also provides scenario-based training that emphasizes critical thinking and teamwork—essential skills for every

Saving Lives Every Day Today the Red Cross provides approximately 40 percent of the nation’s blood supply, and must collect around 17,000 donations each day to keep up with demand. Last year, 3.5 million people donated blood to the Red Cross, providing critical blood products to patients in need at nearly 3,000 hospitals.

The Red Cross enjoys the support of young blood donors across the country, many of whom give blood at drives held at college and university campuses. Now, thanks to the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP), the Red Cross is able to reach an even greater number of young supporters. CAMP is an educational program that helps students from migrant and seasonal farm-working backgrounds succeed in college by helping them connect with scholarships, internships and service learning opportunities. One of those opportunities is the Cesar E. Chavez Blood Drive Challenge, which engagesLatino college students in the U.S. as campus organizers. In 2011, CAMP held 91 blooddrives with the American Red Cross, resulting in more than 5,900 donations.

Another successful collaboration kicked off in August 2011, when Keebler and the Red Cross announced a partnership that will help spread the word about how good it is to give blood.

Through the “Be a Good Cookie; Get a Good Cookie.” campaign, Keebler will donate 6 million cookies a year for a minimum of two years for Red Cross blood donor centers and blood drives. This in-kind donation will provide delicious snacks to generous blooddonors.

Young donors like this college student are vital to the blood

donor community.

and other disasters in 27 countries. In addition, the American Red Cross also worked with Red Cross and Red Crescent partners around the world to build safer, more resilient communities that are better prepared for future disasters.

When widespread drought in the Horn of Africa caused crop failure, water scarcity, low food supplies, death of livestock and the migration of people throughout the region, the American Red Cross contributed $4.2 million to the global Red Cross network’s multi-country response, which provided water, food, health services and other relief supplies.

Cross also responded to Typhoon Washi in the Philippines by supporting the global Red Cross network’s response, which assisted 25,000 people with food, clean drinking water and shelter supplies.

Last year the American Red Cross helped communities in 33 countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean better understand the disaster risks they face, develop action plans and identify cost-effective early warning systems to better predict and react to threats.

The American Red Cross also brought measles vaccinations and health education messages to communities around the world. As a founding partner of the Measles Initiative, the American Red Cross has supported the vaccination of more than 1 billion children against measles over the last decade, including more than 146 million last year. Red Cross volunteers played a critical role in measles vaccination campaigns by going door-to-door, reaching even remote communities, to encourage mothers to bring their children to be vaccinated.

Around the World

After Typhoon Washi damaged his home, Peter Lacarte received supplies from the Red Cross that helped him repair his house.

2012 at a Glance

• 4.4 million people received disaster assistance from the American Red Cross in coordination with its global Red Cross network partners.

• Red Cross partners and communities in 33 countries were better prepared for future disasters.

• More than 146 million children were protected against measles.

• 4,709 families turned to the
