    Desert Dreams

Typology: Residential LandscapeClient: Davendra SalechaLocation: Jodhpur, RajasthanProject Size: 9000 sqft

    Year: 2008

Featured : CW Interiors, April 2009 Issue

The landscape was designed to visuallyreshape the site and to establish asymbiotic relationship with architecture.

The attempt was to merge the outdoors with the indoors. For this, a circularform for the rear lawn was envisaged,

which seamlessly owed from inside, resembling the uid form of the letterS. Then, a central open space wascreated as a sit-out area that could also

be host to get-togethers, surroundedby plantation to create the intimacy ofinteracting with nature. A pergola wasdesigned to populate the barren, narrowpassage from the driveway to the rearlawn, and stone columns representativeof the stark Jodhpur landscape, werepositioned at the entrance.

    Hardscapes and green areas were

balanced throughout - large sections ofgarden were heavily planted with shrubs while the paved areas were shaded byinstalling a small pergola draped withcreepers and by planting trees aroundthem.

    Urban Rustic

Typology: Residential RenovationClient: S.N. MenonLocation: Sector-14, Noida, U.P.Project Size: 3500 sqft

    Year: 2008-09

The house was in a really bad shapebefore LSDA started the renovation ofthis small house in Noida, U.P. There

were small windows in all rooms withalmost no connection with the outdoorgarden area. Most spaces, thoughdecently sized, seemed cramped andclaustrophobic.

Though, there was a small light court within the house that came through

as a connecting architectural elementthat tied the interior spaces through the oors. This court, with plants havingbold & striking foliage, was to becamethe most recognizable feature of thehouse after the renovation.

When the renovation started, windows were made bigger and redesigned toallow maximum connection with thefront garden area and the light court.Facing the south direction, the lightcourt actually brings in direct sunlight toall the living spaces of the house during

winters whereas cuts off harsh summersunrays without comprimising on thenatural light quality.

The house had a monochromatic yet warm colour theme throughout, that was designed to make it a blank canvasfor its occupants so that they can givetheir individual character to each space.

Working within limited budgets is oftenseen as a deterrent to design freedomand innovative detailing but with aclient who is responsive to alternativematerials and ideas and shows faith inyour creative pursuits, limited budgetsleads to creative detailing and use ofsome not so conventional materials.

An of ce space for a garmentmerchandising rm shows exactly

how unconventional materials such asbamboo and jute coir ( baandh ) used tomake moodhas (round jute or cane stools)can be used to bring down costs ofconstruction without compromising onaesthetics, function or visual appeal ofthe space.

In this project, materials such asbamboo and coir rope were used as theydid not require any nishing such asplaster/ paints or other treatments. Infact, they provide a perfectly nished yetaesthetically pleasing surface for walls, partitions and drop ceilings.

Being a garment rm, the use of thesematerials establishes a strong contextuallink between the work and the

workplace. Projects such as these createenormous potential for experimentationand learning about various materialsthat are not so commonly used inmainstream interior designing materialpalettes.

    Garden around a Pavilion

Typology: Residential LandscapeClient: Ashok SinghviLocation: Gandhidham, GujaratProject Size: 1 acre

    Year: 2010-11

This family of ve brothers in

Gandhidham, Gujarat believe in livingtogether and spending quality time

with each other in a true Indian familystyle. The brothers with their familieslived in identical houses maintainingthe togetherness of Joint families butstriding along with time and providingenough personal space for individualfamilies.

The primary design brief was to create agarden space that can hold innumerousfamily get-togethers and helps thefamily to connect with each other in anoutdoor space.

Design for this family garden wasdeveloped around a pavilion that

was the spine of all outdoor activity.Children and elders could relax, interact, play, eat & drink and gossip at the sametime. The garden has a large gatheringspace as well for small functions andcricket & football matches. The gardenalready had a large number of DatePalms ((Phoenix dactylifera) spreadacross the site, some in clusters andsome alone. The area under the clustersprovided a natural spot for siting seatingareas for the family.

The entry to the houses was alsodesigned through a common court (onecourt for 2 houses) so that there are noboundaries or physical barriers. Everyhouse, though, had a small garden spaceconnected to the master bedroom that

was more private and screened fromother areas for the family to enjoy theirpersonal time.

    Year: 2010-11

One would generally de ne a project

like this as another row house on asmall plot in a suburb. But for us, it wasan opportunity to question the wholeidea of prevalent builder-ism whichin lieu of increased FAR norms havescarred our urban fabric with bulky andoverpowering masses of built entities.

Within, the same framework of FARrequirements, the attempt was to

break the volume of the front facadeof the house and to bring it down tohuman scale based on the concepts ofproportions and scale.

Planting was incorporated in theelevation as an important element withbuilt-in planters, pergola for creepersto climb on, use of rain chains as waterchannels, etc which further helped insoftening the otherwise solid block ofbuilding.

A simple solution, like doubling upthe toilet ventilation shaft as a light

well adjoining the dining room insteadof enclosing it in solid walls, as it isgenerally done, made a huge differenceto the indoor natural light quality of thehouse as well.
